Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

Yes there are drag queens in it (they use a lot of make-up so fair play to Boots Grin) along with lots of other people but reports of the boycott are mostly about the black Mrs Claus.

For all we know Mrs Claus is black!

I accidentally voted wrong! The whole backlash is ridiculous

I think it's a great ad, but let's not imagine for a minute that the people who scripted it didn't know exactly what they were trying to stir up (i.e., backlash from bigots and then anti-backlash from anti-bigots).

At this point, store Xmas ads aren't really about the store at all, they're about where a brand wants to be in the culture wars. I'm looking forward to the ad when Nigel Farage starts a Proper British Department Store. 😂

drdrcantyouhearmecallingcalling · 14/11/2024 19:52

Just watched it and my guess is that maybe, just maybe, the demographic who are moaning and talking about boycotting Boots, aren't the one they're trying to appeal to.

Also good move by Boots as it's the only Christmas advert I've taken the time to watch on Youtube and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Littlemissgobby · 14/11/2024 19:52

This is in capitals because where is THE CHILD I keep seeing that apparently the telegraph an article that says they use they pronouns for a child there is no child

Gloriia · 14/11/2024 19:53

BleekHaus · 14/11/2024 19:50

The people calling for a boycott are very much the same people criticising “two tier Kier” for sending people to prison for using “hurty words” on Twitter (or inciting violence as everyone else calls it). Yet they seem very triggered by an actress using “hurty words”, to the extent we’re being asked to boycott shops. Almost like they, themselves, are massive snowflakes.

Not sure if boycotting a shop is any way comparable to sending people to prison for hurty words is it?

WhoDatDen · 14/11/2024 19:53

It's a crap advert. People dont like the lead actress because of her 'terribly white' comment. And it has drag queens. What's to like?

Will I boycott Boots - no. These big companies have marketing departments full of the wokie-dokies who keep churning out this right-on stuff while most of us sit there thinking WTF. Just sit down with your cup of tea and spend a few minutes watching the adverts these days. They must be London-centric as most dont represent me or my little part of the UK.

They should stick to something easy like Kevin the Carrot. Or who remembers the boxer dog gazing longingly out of the window at the fox and badger on the trampoline from a few years ago - now that was a great Christmas ad.

Purplewarrior · 14/11/2024 19:53

StarSlinger · 14/11/2024 19:08

I've seen someone on MN say 'there's no one in it who looks like me' No, because bigots are not usually represented in Christmas adverts.

Now that made me chuckle!

Crikeyalmighty · 14/11/2024 19:54

I certainly won't be boycotting but do think it's a bit of a box ticking excercise

Apollo365 · 14/11/2024 19:54

I like it! I must be their target market. LOVE the actress and the whole idea. Women do fucking most of it.

I think that’s where you’re wrong. There is literally nothing in that advert that is that woke even though the telegraph made a lie about claiming that she said them to a child, meaning that she didn’t use the correct pronoun as in him I never saw a child. I’ve just looked at the advert three times to.
It’s literally a woman doing the work and then saying at the end you don’t think that Santa does all the work do you which is basically empowering for women as well because women do a lot of the work and don’t get the recognition

It has DEI stamped all over it. I can imagine the brief to the ad agency - "we want to be seen as a brand that is fully diverse, equal and inclusive" and sovthe agency immediately thought "black lead" and "drag queens" so for me the ad is political rather than what they would have come up with if they had said "our target audience is shoppers, mainly women with families, buying multiple presents for family and friends for Christmas" or sth like that.

The John Lewis ad is much more targeted to its customer base.

Well St. Nick is Turkish.🤷‍♀️

Msmoonpie · 14/11/2024 19:55

I think it’s fine. I am GC and have no issue with it - not the first time I’ve said that here either.

It’s concerning that in 2025 the politics of the fifties and sixties have risen ag.

Who are their customer base then?

Apollo365 · 14/11/2024 19:56

I bet drag queens spend a mint on make up! They are prob boots biggest customer.

Apollo365 · 14/11/2024 19:56

And they are fabulous 🙌🏼

Seriously it’s a woman that is doing all the work and the man gets the recognition also dei we are not in the USA. Bet you r a reform voter ?

schoolsoutforever · 14/11/2024 19:57

I just watched it on youtube. It's very short (I guess it is an ad) and seems really jolly. No ideas what anyone could object to. Well, of course I DO know that there are bigots and racists who may object but really...

Surely no-one with more than a couple of brain cells would. Yes, it's celebrating diversity, but that is my experience of everyday life so...that seems right...and a good thing to boot.

I'm fairly gender critical myself BUT have absolutely no problem with this advert and its variety of people/elves.

frugalkitty · 14/11/2024 19:57

Just watched it on you tube and realised that I actually saw it a few minutes ago as DS has the football on ITV.....my only observation is that I hadn't realised it was advertising Boots! But, it's been a long day so maybe it's because I'm tired.

For all we know Mrs Claus is black!

For all we know Santa is pansexual and polyamorous, and lives with his black wife, white non binary partner and Asian boyfriend 😃
