Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

1000 replies

Deadbeatex · 14/11/2024 18:30

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

Because they are professionally offended snowflakes who watch too much GB News. ❄️ 🙄

@PinkiOcelot after reading some thoughts on this it’s got nothing to do with black people in the advert

CowboyJoanna · 14/11/2024 19:28

Isnt it fucking obvious
Search up on google do muslims celebrate christmas and your UK-centric bubble will be burst

But we're talking about the UK here. This is a UK based site, the Ads we're talking about are UK Ads and the Muslims we're talking to are UK Muslims.

Stop making up statistics and presenting them as fact.

I'm pretty over drag queens being used as a lazy shorthand for 'fun edgy women'. Because the old-fashioned kind (y'know with vaginas) just aren't interesting enough in their own right. This advert got an eye roll from me on that basis before I quickly moved on to other things in my head

It's clearly intended for a female audience and is attempting a very safe kind of edginess by using the old tropes of "men are a bit shit" and "accepting men dressed as women makes us super cool and fun". Other than that it's just another tired Christmas advert, it's designed to generate interest, good or bad doesn't matter, indifference would be the fail.

I have just looked at the advert three times. I couldn’t even really tell that half of them were drag queens. It’s like you guys perpetually homing on things like this and want to get so outraged. Do you know as a woman that doesn’t take away from me being a woman, I don’t find even anything offensive seriously people get a grip.

Simonjt · 14/11/2024 19:32

CowboyJoanna · 14/11/2024 19:19

I know quite a few.
NONE of them celebrate christmas.

As a child we were one of the very few families at mosque who didn’t celebrate christmas. As an adult I know a lot of muslims, I don’t know any who don’t celebrate christmas.

I suggest you check out who is calling for the boycott and why.

I’m sure Boots will be gutted to have a few fewer racists shopping there.

I know! That'll make it a more pleasant place to shop.

ITS NOT BECAUSE SHE'S BLACK ITS BECAUSE OF WHAT SHE SAID!!!

Can't believe it took till about thirty responses in before anyone wrote this!

Can you explain the bit about getting Boots advantage points for returning stuff please? I've not seen that and would definitely be interested.

So you download the app and register your empty beauty and health products with them. Once you have five banked, if you need to buy anything that’ll be above £10 at Boots, you go to one that is in the scheme and take the empties. You then deposit them and you pretty much instantly get a voucher that you scan at the till, that gives you 500 points when you spend a tenner.

Most muslims in the UK are not british

JusteanBiscuits · 14/11/2024 19:34

CowboyJoanna · 14/11/2024 19:24

Okay I dont think you even know what a muslim is. As i said before, Im talking about actual practicing muslims not just british asians

But 99% Muslims dont celebrate Christmas, and why should they? its a Christian holiday. Sure some stuff like the trees and santa are pagan but again, muslims do not observe this.
just like our family dont celebrate Eid or Ramadan.

99% worldwide? Or is this 99% just in the UK?

I live in a very multicultural area. All but the very strictest I know have a secular celebration like most of us. I don't take part in any religious aspect, but still celebrate it.

pinotgrigeeeeo · 14/11/2024 19:30

I haven't seen it. What's going on?

Surely no one's annoyed about a black woman?

Or is the black woman actually a man?

Just watched it.

Still don't get it.

Saw one man putting on make-up, that's it.

Comments on YouTube all overwhelmingly negative.

(As an aside, it's a pretty rubbish advert, but don't see anything offensive).

JusteanBiscuits · 14/11/2024 19:35

CowboyJoanna · 14/11/2024 19:34

Ah! And now it all becomes clear ..

latetonews · 14/11/2024 19:35

I’ll never go to a drag show because I dislike how they represent caricatures of real women but this advert does not offend me in the slightest.
It’s quite fun and is far more Interesting than the John Lewis one.

Twototwo15 · 14/11/2024 19:35

I judge people on their actions not their skin colour
Yes, most people do, which is why they were a bit fed up with the comment about the royal family balcony line up being terribly white. Why even make that comment, when they are the royal family in England, what did she expect and why feel the need to comment on it? I’m sure there would be criticism of anyone who said the royal family of an African country were terribly black, so let’s not have the usual two tier judgement of everything.
Having said that, I wouldn’t have recognised her anyway and wouldn’t care if I had, I won’t be boycotting boots over an advert.

TheOnlyMrsW · 14/11/2024 19:36

I haven't seen it but have just watched based on this thread and really liked it!! Probably won't be buying anything from there as make-up and perfume doesn't really feature in our house but thought it was fab 🎄

EverythingAllatOnceAllTheTime · 14/11/2024 19:36

It’s a crap advert, but that’s all.

Bunny2607 · 14/11/2024 19:37

noblegiraffe · 14/11/2024 18:34

As far as I can tell, people are upset because there's a black woman in it.

Its not just that its because the woman in the advert said that the balcony when the royal family were stood on it was “terribly white” and at the time there was uproar about it.

obviously what she said was wrong but i can’t be arsed making the effort to “boycott” boots. I generally don’t shop there anyway as find it quite expensive

saraclara · 14/11/2024 19:37

Just found it on YouTube.

I must be a crap feminist, because I found it quirky, glitzy and fun. It was really well done.

People are weird.

Birdscratch · 14/11/2024 19:37

I’ve just watched it because of this thread and it’s actually a fun ad. I can’t see what anyone could possibly be offended about. Unless you’re a card carrying racist, what’s the issue?

Merryoldgoat · 14/11/2024 19:38

Bollihobs · 14/11/2024 19:30

Stating that the royal balcony was white would be 'stating the obvious' - stating that it is too white is an opinion, not a fact.

She didn’t say it was ‘too white’

LBFseBrom · 14/11/2024 19:11

Here it is:

It's OK, it's like a pantomime rehearsal, very festive, with Sana featuring. Unless I am missing something. I daresay now I've found it I'll see it on TV all the time.

Well given it was right there....i watched it lol

I don't really get the fuss about it? I didn't know the actress and had no idea what she had said or in what context she said it so thanks to those who took the time to post as it has helped me to understand a little better what's apparently so offensive about it.

I shall now vote in the poll as YANBU as I can't see why you would boycott the store over this pretty boring advert

tsmainsqueeze · 14/11/2024 19:39

I don't use boots much so i can't say i'm too fussed but i do think it's pretentious virtue signalling when all they ultimately care about is selling as much stuff to make as much money as possible ,the same purpose of every ad whatever the company whatever time of year it is.
It hasn't given me the slightest interest .

The John Lewis one is terrible! Not remotely poignant like the snowman, the hibernating bear or the little dragon one. Just a woman running round a shop. No drag queen's though so that is a bonus.

She did not say it was too white. She just, as you say, stated the obvious.
