Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

I just watched it and it is very very different from the world I live in, but I'm okay with that. I know lots of people are different. I am also different.

dannyufcfan · 14/11/2024 19:25

I've boycotted Boots for years, now.

Always find them far too uncomfortable. Prefer trainers.

CowboyJoanna · 14/11/2024 19:25

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/11/2024 19:24

Where are you getting that 99% figure from?

Ok now youre just being a smartarse

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/11/2024 19:26

I've just seen the advert. It's very silly. I never shop at Boots so won't be boycotting.

Drag is not a fetish it's entertainment.

True, it can be. Thanks for reminding me of that. I have a friend who is into drag. He is straight but claims he is lesbian and now considering top surgery. He is in his 30s. I told him nah, that's just being into drag. You're a drag king. Own it! No need to identify as anything!! Makes me roll my eyes how people want to identify as a minority these days !

I used to worknin marketing and the video of any ad campaign is to engage your target audience and this is where I have a problem with the ad. Who exactly do they think their target audience is? If they are genuinely trying to appeal to a young, "woke" crowd then fair enough. But it doesn't seem to me to represent their actual customer base and is smacking some other agenda and let's see how that pans out for them.

Marketing often have their own agenda..

I think that’s where you’re wrong. There is literally nothing in that advert that is that woke even though the telegraph made a lie about claiming that she said them to a child, meaning that she didn’t use the correct pronoun as in him I never saw a child. I’ve just looked at the advert three times to.
It’s literally a woman doing the work and then saying at the end you don’t think that Santa does all the work do you which is basically empowering for women as well because women do a lot of the work and don’t get the recognition

BleekHaus · 14/11/2024 19:27

I’m sure Boots will be gutted to have a few fewer racists shopping there.

Georgyporky · 14/11/2024 19:27

First reaction was the actress from Bridgerton must be desperate for money to take part in that.

No, I'm asking you where you got that figure from. I take it you just made it up in your head then?

ItsAllInTheLiving · 14/11/2024 19:28

ElatedShark · 14/11/2024 19:17

Then why are all the complaints about her race? And alot have racial slurs in them? GO LOOK FOR YOURSELF if you think I'm lying.

Tbf, people will use any excuse to be racist regardless of if it's about her race or about what she said. Being black or in her case, half-black is ammo enough for racists to go in once she steps foot the wrong way.

I think what she said was stupid but nothing ever warrants racist attacks.

SometimesCalmPerson · 14/11/2024 19:28

Considering that the biggest target market for boots to sell cosmetics to in the Uk is going to be white women, it would be nice if they were represented. It would also make sense for the main actor not to be someone that has been publicly rude about white people existing in a white family. I couldn’t be arsed to boycott and I prefer our local Superdrug anyway, but it makes me think less of them as a company

timenowplease · 14/11/2024 19:28

They should have done a Gina Yashere version..

Drag queens and ‘they’ pronouns feature and it’s tedious.

Ads like that are extremely well paid and acting is a very precarious job. She'd be a fool not do it.

Meanwhile I’ve just seen the M & S advert .. they’ve only gone and used one of my all time favourite songs..🙌🙌.
The Jackson Sisters ..I Believe in Miracles.
..the most joyful sound. 😊🤩. Merry Blimmin’ Christmas indeed.

I adore that song as well. Tuuuuuuune!

AyrshireTryer · 14/11/2024 19:29

Every year 'people' boycott a store due to an ad vert.
It's boring and I don't anyone really boycotts any store.

StarSlinger · 14/11/2024 19:29

CowboyJoanna · 14/11/2024 19:24

Okay I dont think you even know what a muslim is. As i said before, Im talking about actual practicing muslims not just british asians

But 99% Muslims dont celebrate Christmas, and why should they? its a Christian holiday. Sure some stuff like the trees and santa are pagan but again, muslims do not observe this.
just like our family dont celebrate Eid or Ramadan.

I work with lots of practising muslims. they are more than happy to join in with the Christmas celebrations. Stop pushing your anti Muslim agenda.

pinotgrigeeeeo · 14/11/2024 19:30

I haven't seen it. What's going on?

Surely no one's annoyed about a black woman?

Or is the black woman actually a man?

Littlemissgobby · 14/11/2024 19:30

WigglyVonWaggly · 14/11/2024 19:28

There is no they pronouns I have just bloody watched three times and wow drag queen we had loads you know Paul o Grady etc. when did folks get so like snowflakes pathetic

Bollihobs · 14/11/2024 19:30

ColinOfficeTrolley · 14/11/2024 18:39

It's because the black woman who is in the advert, said that the royal balcony at one of their many tax payer shindigs, was too white.

Tommy Robinson type supporters got very offended by this, so are boycotting boots because this black woman is in the advert.

Pretty fucking pathetic when she was only stating the obvious.

Stating that the royal balcony was white would be 'stating the obvious' - stating that it is too white is an opinion, not a fact.

Raquelos · 14/11/2024 19:30

I'm pretty over drag queens being used as a lazy shorthand for 'fun edgy women'. Because the old-fashioned kind (y'know with vaginas) just aren't interesting enough in their own right. This advert got an eye roll from me on that basis before I quickly moved on to other things in my head

It's clearly intended for a female audience and is attempting a very safe kind of edginess by using the old tropes of "men are a bit shit" and "accepting men dressed as women makes us super cool and fun". Other than that it's just another tired Christmas advert, it's designed to generate interest, good or bad doesn't matter, indifference would be the fail.

LeticiaMorales · 14/11/2024 19:31

Oh my god, people are boycotting it because Mrs Claus is black? Seriously?
Right, I'm going to spend a whole lot of money in Boots then. What bigotry.

arethereanyleftatall · 14/11/2024 19:31

Just reading the first few very ignorant responses and I hope someone in the next hundred responses has explained the actual reason!! I'll carry on reading. Though it's fascinating how wrong people can get things!
