Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

Deadbeatex · 14/11/2024 18:30

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

Tell me what’s offensive about the advert. Not about libraries or schools, not about trans women but about that advert.

Arran2024 · 15/11/2024 12:58

Cancel culture would be if the actress was flamed and never worked again. Individuals choosing to shop somewhere else isn't cancel culture.

Yeah. Not buying.

An organised campaign to get people to boycott a business over someone they've hired is 100% trying to make sure that person can't get hired.

Some definitions of cancel culture: Cancel culture is a cultural phenomenon in which an individual thought to have acted or spoken in an unacceptable manner is ostracized, boycotted, shunned, fired or assaulted, often aided by social media.

the mass withdrawal of support from public figures or celebrities who have done things that aren't socially accepted today.

Freedom of speech is great for me but not for thee.

Here’s what a panto dame is
they have nothing to do with the trans movement

Does the current (I believe it is represented on our TV) drag queen entertainment industry have anything to do with the trans movement? Genuine question, I have no preconceptions.

DoraGray · 15/11/2024 14:46

StandingSideBySide · 15/11/2024 13:53

Have they become involved in this or made comments. I don’t do other social discussion forums?

They're not really Social Media. @StandingSideBySide

I subscribe to their newsletter which always tries to shine a light and of course, their website has lots of interesting stuff..

The last newsletter I have from them was sent out on the 11th of November, so I imagine the Boots debacle will feature on the next one. I am certainly going to email them to tell them that the actress in this pro Trans ad is a Trans Activist herself and as anyone with a brain will agree, that casting won't be accidental!

The latest newsletter highlights the case of a 17 year old autistic girl, who was disciplined for asking a trans identifying person on the pitch if he was a man. Of course he was!

I can heartily recommend having a lot at the website. Maya Forstater et al are absolutely brilliant in standing up for women even if some women, as we have seen on this forum, don't think there is a problem with this insidious issue.

Luckily for those women and their daughters, many of us aren't rolling over to be tickled..

I’m not an expert and have no idea what the current or even past drag queen entertainment industry is all about or indeed what it’s affiliations are. I haven’t mentioned drag queens ???
Perhaps a Google as you’re online

Thanks Dora.
I understand ( well I know tbh ) that there is a demonstration against the FA this Sunday outside the England v Ireland match about the 17yr olds 6 match ban.
We’ll be at the match ( supporting Ireland, sorry England ) and will give them a cheer. The treatment of that girl during questioning was a disgrace. There has to be a limit to what’s acceptable.

apologies for the derail OP, if you’re still around

Clavinova · 15/11/2024 14:57

Is it just me or does the helper directly behind Adjoa Andoh and the conveyer belt look like she (?) is sporting a crown and large protruding ears?

@Dramatic it was a bad choice of actress given her ‘balcony’ comment was the most complained about comment on TV in 2023.
Boots should have done some research on the people they chose to represent them.

Edited

Or maybe, like many MANY of us, they couldn't give a shit about the sort of people who get all upset about such things. Three people on my facebook whinged about the add due to race, and I have very happily unfriended all 3.

Totally agree with you.

That's why this Boots ad is so outrageous-it slyly pushes the limits of what is acceptable-do they call it boiling the frog?
The poor frog-real women-don't realise the water getting hotter until it's too late!

I imagine the Trans-Activists at Boots are laughing up their sleeves at all the helpful idiots shouting that people don't like it because it's racist.

They refuse to take on board the fact that if it is only racists who object to this Boots advert, then why is there not a similar sized controversy about every advert featuring people of colour?

Could there possibly be something a bit different about this advert that makes it different from other adverts featuring people of colour and about which no controversy whirls.?

Still, there will be some who refuse to see because they are trans, are trans activists, hate women, are trans allies, men or just a bit numb.

Am I a man, dumb or just hate women? Because I see it as a carnival, a circus, where SHOCK HORROR gender norms have always been flexible.

But I forget. I am a paedophile, a child abuser, social services will take my children..

Oh and I've hallucinated all the race related bullshit about this ad all over the internet.

None of my comments have referred to her race so I have no idea why you tagged me.
My thoughts are that people are upset because of her prior racist comment….as my post.

It is people like you who tried to ruin a friends life a few weeks back. She was doxed, her employers contacted to try and get her sacked, her children's schools were contacted. All because a small dicked transphobic man decided to tell the internet she was a man, not a woman. I am SO sick of your "side" right now.

Well, when you have had your lie down, complete with wet cloth, have a think.

However, if you feel the vein in your temple throbbing, stop thinking immediately and resume your normal stance.

It seems different people have different issues about this advert but I don’t see anyone on this thread saying they objected to black people being in this advert.
The vast majority have other issues with it
Apeciate you’re on Facebook too but maybe shout and scream at them as it’s those that are racists…..

No vein throbbing, no need to lie down. Just utterly sick of of the anti-trans movement who tried to ruin the life of a good friend and her children. Just because a man decided she didn't match his ideas of what a woman should look like. Why???

I don't agree. Take Dylan Mulvaney and Bud Light. Dylan wasn't cancelled. It was Budweiser that was boycotted by people who decided the brand no longer met their needs.

Same here. If people look at the ad and think that Boots no longer matches their needs, that's just life. It will match the new market they are aiming at.

The actress in the ad isn't going to be cancelled. That's the difference.
