Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

@Dramatic it was a bad choice of actress given her ‘balcony’ comment was the most complained about comment on TV in 2023.
Boots should have done some research on the people they chose to represent them.

Edited

I think she was picked on purpose so they can pretend it is only racist people who object. brushing the real point of their advert-men who say they are women are perfectly normal.

If an earlier pp is correct and this actress is a Pro Trans activist, then it is obvious to everyone with half an eye that Boots-who consulted Trans groups-before making this awful advert- that she was ideal for the job.

Anyone who objects to the pushing of trans issues should boycott Boots.

If you don't object, then crack on and spend, spend, spend. You-or your daughters-will regret it but hey ho-be kind!

But one last thing-did you see any females pretending to be men in this advert?

WhatterySquash · 15/11/2024 13:31

And yes actual racists won't like it. That doesn't make that the only issue here.

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/11/2024 13:35

All the poor wee racists and their raised blood pressure. I feel like I've been given an early Christmas present.Grin

WinterBones · 15/11/2024 13:40

"I don't see myself represented"

Oh do fuck off, its an advert, created to sell their goods, you don't NEED to be 'represented' in it.

Shop there, don't shop there, but stop all this hand wringing righteous agenda bollocks.

EverythingAllatOnceAllTheTime · 15/11/2024 13:41

I preferred the Virgin Atlantic advert.

My Egyptian Muslim husband is always the first one in our family to say "lets go and buy a Christmas tree" and the one to get the decorations out.

Good for him! My neighbours also told me that Cairo has the biggest Christmas tree in the Middle East, courtesy of their Coptic population.

SinnerBoy · 15/11/2024 13:48

Anyway, I've missed a few posts, as there were so many to get through. Has anyone seen the amateur "John Lewis" one, with the robin? I don't think anyone could object:

I went to YouTube to view this advert, and was shocked by the comments. Absolute racists.

It was me who noted she is a trans activist.
I can confirm it is correct…..honestly!

Personally re your last sentence I didn’t notice.

DoraGray · 15/11/2024 13:50

Thanks for pointing that out @StandingSideBySide

I wonder if they're aware of that over at Sex Matters.

Why can't activists and those who like to challenge us to think like them fall silent just for Christmas. All that woke stuff is meaningless to children; Christmas should be traditional and magical just for them

I don't get this. Why is it "woke" and "meaningless to kids"for people who are black or in drag to be represented in telly shows/adverts?
We can all celebrate Christmas together, why does it make it any less or meaningless if it's not a completely white, straight cast?

Why do we need people in drag in adverts? When did it become normal for what is adult entertainment to infiltrate every part of life? Modern drag isn’t my thing. It’s become less entertainment and more woman face imho but if people want to do it or see it fine but it’s an adult niche. What fetishes are going to be seen as suitable for children to see next? Bondage? S&M? Actually we already see that. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Enough! Can’t be go back to keeping adult entertainment just for adults? Please 🙏🏻

Have you ever been to a pantomime? You can’t get much more Christmassy than that. I hate to break it to you but the dames ain’t dames.

I know quite a few. NONE of them celebrate christmas.

Offhand, my Egyptian neighbours always put a tree and decorations up. My daughter's friend, with Bangladeshi parents, has the same.

I think there are millions of Coptic Christian Egyptians. Their religion predates the Islamic conquest, and of course the introduction of Arabic to Egypt. So the Coptic church still uses the original language. Pre 1971, it mightn’t have so bad, but a constitutional amendment changed the status quo, and gave Islam as the basis of Egyptian law. Loads of Egyptian Coptic Christians emigrated.

to cut a long post short, could the Egyptians be Coptic? Decorations can be secular in any event. You can’t beat a good reindeer!

No, they're most definitely Muslim.

StandingSideBySide · 15/11/2024 14:16

Here’s what a panto dame is
they have nothing to do with the trans movement

Panto dames are different from drag queens. My daughter who has special needs loves panto but is terrified of drag queens. I think it's a different energy and attitude.

Well done 👏 for pointing that out to me. My ex-husband actually performed onstage as the dame one year for my daughter’s dance class performance and it was open to the public. The thing is the children knew he was L’s daddy dressing up in a ridiculous costume. He was playing a pantomime dame. Not playing at being a real woman. Nor was he being overtly sexual. Okay a few innuendos that fly right over the heads of children. Pantomime dames are not pretending to be like real women and confusing children and flash their body in libraries, schools and other public spaces.
