Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

I quite like it?

Don’t b3 silly. I would say the majority of TV adverts have people of colour in them, and people aren’t boycotting their advertised products. The amout of people of colour in adverts is way over the representative majority race in the UK.

So are you saying that TV adverts are too black?

thepariscrimefiles · 15/11/2024 07:48

Surely if you are on the same side as 'Britain First', you are on the wrong side?

hamsandyams · 15/11/2024 08:16

BeatriceAndLottie · 14/11/2024 18:45

There’s a big difference in ‘not your cup of tea’ and getting openly offended by them appearing in an advert. From experience, the vast majority of drag queen haters also turn out to be casually homophobic

Lot of us are also far from homophobic, but take issue with how scandalous it is to do ‘black face’ but doing ‘woman face’ is celebrated.

But actually I have no issue with the advert. I don’t love the hypocrisy of drag queens, and I won’t be using any pronouns other than the ones I choose - but I don’t think the Boots ad over does it. The trans community often accused the GC community of saying their existence. I accept that trans people exist (the same way as people of different religions exist) and I therefore have no issue with seeing them in mainstream media.

So for those at the back who have missed why some people are annoyed with boots.
It’s the actress……..not her colour but her words when she said ‘ gone from the rich diversity of the Abbey to a terribly white balcony ‘

Ive attached extract from the actresses wiki regarding her comments

Nb: for some bizarre reason she hadn’t realised ?? the balcony after the coronation which only ever has family members would obviously be all white people. This is an intelligent lady….she would know this and the comment upset many people…..

Why is the Royal family still so overwhemlingly white after all of these years? Why shouldn't it be commented on?

The13thFairy · 15/11/2024 08:21

I've just watched it on youtube. I don't like it, and I don't care that I don't like it, and I won't be boycotting Boots.

Dramatic · 15/11/2024 08:33

JusteanBiscuits · 14/11/2024 19:10

Except she didn't say they were too white. She commented on the contrast between the abbey and the balcony. Not negatively. Just a comment on it. Stop reading the daily mail!

Edited

Why did she feel the need to comment on their race?

Newgirls · 15/11/2024 08:43

Don’t think many people are boycotting - ours was heaving on Saturday. It’s had a refit and the makeup selection is excellent.

the main actress in the ad is from
bridgerton - stunning woman

Livelovebehappy · 15/11/2024 00:20

Give over. No-one on this post has said that at all. You're definitely looking for something which isn't there. And all the name calling isnt going to change that. There's absolutely nothing on social media which suggests people are boycotting because of anything to do with race. You're fabricating to fit your own agenda.

A couple of minutes on Twitter is long enough to find plenty of racists whining about the advert. Look up Darren Grimes,' post and read the comments. I was going to post some examples, but I don't want to give them amplification.

I don't use Boots because of their complete lack of customer service and all the tills are self service.

Why did she feel the need to comment on their race?

I mean she gave an explanation of why she said that the following day. Why do you think anyone here will have a better explanation?

Eh? You want them
to have partners of difference hues to prove.. what? Many many families are ‘overwhelmingly’ white, black, brown after all these years. Such a ridiculous question.

What's wrong with a family being white?
Would you say the same about a family being black?
They are who they are and can't change their skin colour.

Inauthentic · 15/11/2024 09:04

It is NOT about the woman being black. It is about her racisms towards white people,

The assumption that she is a racist based on her comment is unconvincing to me.

Britain First initiated the petition due to her comments and the fact that she is black.

"Boots has just launched a sickeningly woke Christmas advert starring the notoriously anti-white racist actress ‘Adjoa Andoh’ (who described the British Royal Family as ‘Terribly White’) as ‘Mrs Claus’.
“The advert also promotes ‘They/Them’ transgender pronouns, a concept created by far-left extremist LGBT movements in an attempt to undermine traditional gender norms, biological sex and the traditional Christian family."

I was internally rolling my eyes when reading it.

knackeredcat · 15/11/2024 09:26

Just watched. Can't get my knickers in a knot over Mrs Claus in all honesty. My only issue is the whole sass and "slay" vibe. Feels too loud and vacuous, promoting influencer types (who need to go away forever).

I prefer my Christmas ads quieter and cosier, although none of the retailers seem to go for this much any more. Much of the ads feel frantic, noisy, clamouring. Or if they are quieter, it's always a sugary, warbly take on an old song featured.

I'll leave this old animated Boots ad here as a palate cleanser 😊

TriesNotToBeCynical · 14/11/2024 21:57

She's also English, and it's her royal family. For fair comparison you should be comparing an African person criticising an African royal family, not an English person. And whether said African was being racist would indeed depend entirely on the context in which they said it. (PS, it is actually possible, indeed common, for an African citizen to be white, in case you're thinking of raising this.)

You honestly think I don't know there are white people in Africa??? Fuck me.

ExhaustedHousewife · 15/11/2024 09:32

Samcro · 14/11/2024 22:22

i don’t get what you mean

Wide-eyed ignorance at it's best 😂

ExhaustedHousewife · 15/11/2024 09:34

JassyRadlett · 14/11/2024 22:38

The actress is mixed race British, born in Bristol. The royal family in question is the royal family of her own country.

So totally different from a white British actor commenting on the royal family of a country to which she has no ties by birth, nationality or residence.

These concepts are not terribly difficult.

Yes,like it wouldn't be difficult for you to understand that what she said and mentioning race is very inflammatory, no?

WinterBones · 15/11/2024 09:34

i think boycotting a shop because you don't like their advert is beyond stupid.

drdrcantyouhearmecallingcalling · 15/11/2024 09:35

Also logistically how does the boycott actually work? You're in town, need some tampons, see a Boots but then remember you're very annoyed about a 60 second advert and walk on by. Strange the hill some will choose to die on ;)

drdrcantyouhearmecallingcalling · 15/11/2024 09:37

Also everyone talking about Adjoa Andoh's comments on the Royal Wedding (I think that was the occasion) have they also boycotted Bridgerton?

polydactylfeline · 15/11/2024 09:40

I love Boots! 3 for 2 Christmas prezzies here we come Grin

VegTrug · 15/11/2024 09:50

StarSlinger · 14/11/2024 18:35

I'm also woke and proud.

🤣🤣🤣 That's not something to be proud of! 🤦🏼‍♀️

cooliebrown · 15/11/2024 09:53

I'm boycotting Boots, yes.

I have been for several years, since they offshored to avoid paying tax in the UK.

Happyearlyretirement · 15/11/2024 09:53

I love the advert, didn’t even realise that it had drag artists in it, just thought they were Santas elves. Think I must be a bit shallow. I’m going to go and find something to be annoyed with NOT!!
