Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

1000 replies

Deadbeatex · 14/11/2024 18:30

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

What's wrong with a family being white?
Would you say the same about a family being black?
They are who they are and can't change their skin colour.

Well, they had a great opportunity to embrace a 'Person of Colour' as part of the Royal Family, and we all know how that turned out.

the bones of it is factual - the family/balcony was “white” - but to say “terribly white” doesn’t sit so well with me. I know that terribly can, and indeed might have been in this case, used as an intensifier, but it is a word that really does have negative connotations - which probably were intended. It was a strange comment. How can we get diversity into the royal family? Tell George, Charlotte and Louis that they must not marry / reproduce with anyone white?

How does any family become more diverse? They are brought up to not care about skin colour or backgrounds so if they happen to fall in love with someone from a different culture, ethnicity or class then it would be fine. That is not what happens in our royal family.

Yes,like it wouldn't be difficult for you to understand that what she said and mentioning race is very inflammatory, no?

I think it's entirely possible to make that point without correspondingly inflammatory and racially charged non-comparisons.

TammyJones · 15/11/2024 09:59

Just watched it.
It's brilliant.
It's the actress from Bridgerton who I love.
Santa sleep haha

Yes she left and then sold stories on them.

Didimum · 15/11/2024 10:03

The only people in realtime I've seen offended by it are middle-aged white men. I'm sure Boots will do fine without them, since 83% of its customer base is women aged 20-45.

They are frightened when they see something that does not represent them.

WhatterySquash · 15/11/2024 10:13

Remember behind every great man is an even better woman

Or in other words, women mostly do everything to organise Christmas, which is not a good thing and it’s being sold as some kind of feminist victory or smug “silly old men, they don’t know their arse from their elbow” trope, which actually perpetuates that inequality and lets men off the hook. Boots are old hands at this, they did an advert years ago with a woman who did everything even though she had a cold and then on Christmas Day didn’t get a chair because the guests/men got them all. Lovely.

I preferred the snowman ad that modelled a male making an effort for his female partner for Christmas, that was heartwarming and about real feelings.

This ad is about showing off how right-on and progressive Boots are - except not, because womanface, denying sex and yet somehow women still doing everything while men laze around aren’t actually progressive.

and that’s without the balcony comment.

Also logistically how does the boycott actually work? You're in town, need some tampons, see a Boots but then remember you're very annoyed about a 60 second advert and walk on by. Strange the hill some will choose to die on ;)

Edited

Probably pop into the Superdrug next door. (I couldn't give a toss about the boycott btw, but you can always get stuff cheaper elsewhere like Amazon).

EverythingAllatOnceAllTheTime · 15/11/2024 10:18

Like all these things, it’s not really the content that bothers people - it’s the percerption that an agenda is being rammed down their throats.

That’s what really grinds people’s gears….

You have evidence of this happening?

WildFigs · 15/11/2024 10:24

I don't understand people grumbling about the boots ad. Just watched it for the first time and the message seems to be Santa gets the credit but a lot of work goes on behind the scenes, which is true.

TofuTart · 15/11/2024 10:33

StandingSideBySide · 15/11/2024 02:31

She said she liked reindeers and Christmas trees and stuff. She didn’t say anything about everyone having to be white.
Why if everyone on this thread twisting peoples words to make a point

Yes, the poster did say that, I agree - but then also went on to go on about "woke."
What's that mean then, if it's not the fact that there's a black woman in the main role of the advert, or a couple of drag queens, or the woman doing some of Santa's work when he's asleep, should she be baking at home?
No-one's answered that bit yet, it's not twisting words, as some do have a problem with black people being shown (the black family in the Sainsbury's advert the other year, the reaction was insane)
Some do have a problem with drag.
It's not woke to include people who aren't always white/straight. If it is - so what? Let's all enjoy reindeers and Christmas trees together.

Kool4katz · 15/11/2024 10:34

Just watched it on YouTube (don’t have live tv so never watch ads normally) and I found it pretty yuck.

Why would anyone want to celebrate women being stuck with ‘wife work’ at Christmas? Also, I can’t stand seeing men in Drag and don’t like it being normalised.

Luckily, I never shop in Boots anyway so it’s not exactly difficult to officially boycott them.

What agenda?
Why not just spit out what you mean instead of leaning people to guess which "flavour" of the advert you have a problem with?

TofuTart · 15/11/2024 10:37

Love going to pantomime at Christmas and drag is a big part of that.

I don't see, watch or hear ads, simply because I don't watch TV and I listen back on radio and zap through any ads if it ain't Radio4.

Ads are vile brainwashing tools for the gullible masses.

And finally, from my snooty perch 😂all I can say is that Boots could never pay enough for all this free publicity. I'd say they started the commentary for just that reason!

On behalf of the gullible masses, I’d just like to thank you for pointing this out. We are so grateful.

As you might imagine, I’ve tried Radio 4 and I’m afraid the relentless hours of smug bourgeois droning rendered me comatose.

I like bright colours and loud noises! I like lots of movement and sparkly things! It’s just how we gullible masses work! Wotterwelike?!

Calm yourself down.

I don’t need to spell out shit, and certainly not to you.

Now, off you pop.

drdrcantyouhearmecallingcalling · 15/11/2024 09:37

Also everyone talking about Adjoa Andoh's comments on the Royal Wedding (I think that was the occasion) have they also boycotted Bridgerton?

No, because the agitators on X did not stir up a hoo ha.

Everyone sucked into this is sucked into Culture War bots who use the skills of advertisers who specialise in getting people sucked in, literally, as their job, to then sow seeds of division, discontent and misinformation.

This whole thread is an example of their success.

Pantomime and drag are nothing even remotely in the same stratosphere as each other! One was created when women were not allowed to work as actors so men had to stand in. The other, is womanface that mocks women and makes fun of how we dress and speak. This whole comparing drag to womanface is so disingenuous and desperate.

TofuTart · 15/11/2024 10:42

I'm perfectly calm, thanks.

No. Are you new to the internet or something?

In the opinion of many women who aren't handmaidens and recognise misogyny and patronising putdowns.

minionette · 15/11/2024 10:47

Wot?

Are people really? How utterly ridiculous.

Just watched it and it's fab. Is it the drag queens that upset people so much?

Exactiy. It is staggering that people equate the over sexualised misogyny that is drag with pantomime dames Confused.
