Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

Deadbeatex · 14/11/2024 18:30

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

But people have literally been sent to prison for those "hurty words"

Yeah course they have , also we do have hate speech laws in the uk. If you are referring to the woman who was saying they should burn down the hotel in the middle of the riots which can be seen as encouraging people to commit a crime yes she should have been punished

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 14/11/2024 19:59

Katemax82 · 14/11/2024 18:35

No, in my husbands case it's because it's all drag queens

ooh, they’re all drag queens? (Apart from Mrs Claus? I didn’t realise all of them were…)

Combattingthemoaners · 14/11/2024 19:59

The bigots are out in force!

Skyrainlight · 14/11/2024 20:00

Ohhbaby · 14/11/2024 19:01

Thats definately why! I think it is really disingenuous to suggest it is because there is a black woman in it. No - one has a problem with a black woman! I just googled the advert and I understand why people feel uncomfortable with all the men dressing up as woman. We are having to fight to get men out of our bathrooms and keep on trying to say that dressing up as a woman when you are a fully intact male, does not make you a female. And know it feels as if boots are celebrating that.
And I'm not saying you have to agree with that, but I think it is really low to try and suggest that the people who feel uncomfortable are now somehow racist

This is it exactly. It's not about race at all.

cakeorwine · 14/11/2024 20:01

If you are someone who is boycotting Boots, what would you like to have seen instead in this advert?

nam3c4ang3 · 14/11/2024 20:01

Bladdy awful advert and totally stupid message - I don’t care what colour the people are or who they are - it’s a rubbish advert. TBF - boots have never been known for their Christmas adverts.

noblegiraffe · 14/11/2024 20:01

Angrywife · 14/11/2024 19:49

The issue isn't that people are upset there are black people in the advert, but that the main actress herself is perceived to be a racist.

Also many consider it wrong that they use gender neutral pronouns for the child/children.

I haven't seen it but have seen a lot of arguments about it

It’s not “people” that are upset, it’s a specifically racist subset of people that upset.

CowboyJoanna · 14/11/2024 19:24

Okay I dont think you even know what a muslim is. As i said before, Im talking about actual practicing muslims not just british asians

But 99% Muslims dont celebrate Christmas, and why should they? its a Christian holiday. Sure some stuff like the trees and santa are pagan but again, muslims do not observe this.
just like our family dont celebrate Eid or Ramadan.

It’s actually a pagan holiday, just co-opted by Christianity (which it predates).

For the last fucking time I am going to say this there is no body saying they in it there is no child I have re-watched this advert three times now. Where is the child? I keep asking but apparently I don’t get any answer so it’s a load of bollocks so what you’re saying is that people are bothered because there’s fucking drag queens in do you know what in this country? We have? A long history of drag queens since when have the snowflake right wing bastards That they are really takes such an offence over that ridiculous

Arran2024 · 14/11/2024 20:02

Littlemissgobby · 14/11/2024 19:56

Seriously it’s a woman that is doing all the work and the man gets the recognition also dei we are not in the USA. Bet you r a reform voter ?

Most big companies have DEI teams these days. What does Reform have to do with it? And no I didn't vote for them.

Littlemissgobby · 14/11/2024 19:32

I have just looked at the advert three times. I couldn’t even really tell that half of them were drag queens. It’s like you guys perpetually homing on things like this and want to get so outraged. Do you know as a woman that doesn’t take away from me being a woman, I don’t find even anything offensive seriously people get a grip.

"You guys"? Who's that then?

Sorry if you couldn't tell, having spent a great deal of my life around drag artists, I could.

I don't think I was expressing outrage or offence, more exasperation and boredom at the predictable faux edgy angles marketing departments use to try and part us from our cash. You seem a bit cross so I do hope that clarifies and helps you find peace.

🎄ho ho ho etc

WhatterySquash · 14/11/2024 20:02

I think it's obvious that what would happen is anyone who objected to the ad would be told it's because they can't stand to see a black person in a christmas advert.

I don't like the ad at all but it's absolutely not because it features a black woman. I've been seeing black people and other ethnicities in adverts all my life and I'm over 50 and have no issue with that at all, including Christmas ads.

I think it's a mixture of people objecting to AA particularly because of what she said - and while I wasn't especially aerated by it, I can't deny that it was racist (if you're of the view that it's possible to be racist about white people) - and even if you don't accept that, it was very rude and stupid - it is not surprising that the British Royal family is largely white and it is not terrible either. So people are bristling at having her involved with another "white" tradition like Santa - probably a similar demographic of people care about the two things.

But the other thing and more annoying to me is the whole "have to be woke and minoritised and make it as non-white and TQ+ as possible" thing. People are fucking sick of it and it's really not helping social cohesion or mutual understanding - and with the trans element especially, we're supposed to keep having it forced down our throats as some wonderfully cool, progressive and sassy fabulousness when actually lots of people are not happy about losing womens sports and safety in schools etc to this ideology and they're not falling for it any more.

I probably wouldn't 100% boycott boots but boots is shite now so I already go to superdrug instead.

She is best known for playing a black version of Queen Charlotte. Mentioning that the actual Royal Family is very white is not just some random comment coming from her. She gets asked about the Royals and why Queen Charlotte was represented as black in Bridgerton in pretty much every single interview she does. Interviewers expect her to discuss it. She also wasn’t saying it as a criticism, if you read her actual words.

And if she was white and said a black family were too black? Would that be OK?

I am very sorry if I am coming across very cross it’s just that when I read these posts, it’s very hard to get what people are saying when they write it down. However, I do get angry when I see bigotry on this group because at the end of the day we are now in the 21st century if a bloody advert is gonna get you so offended then what the hell is the world going on about if you can’t understand that there are people of different race or drag queens this is my comment not to you per se then I don’t understand why people get upset.

WhatterySquash · 14/11/2024 20:05

And yes as far as I'm concerned Santa could have a black wife, i don't even care about that. It's just that feeling of Boots pushing a very tired and irritating concept of progressiveness on me and wanted to go oh FUCK OFF.

HolyPeaches · 14/11/2024 20:05

Why are people boycotting Boots?

Because they’re thick, narrow minded, idiots- who believe “woke is taking over” and it’s “spot the white person in England”. (These are real words I’ve read by people on Facebook/Twitter).

Are you?

Absolutely not.

Sortumn · 14/11/2024 20:06

I've been boycotting Boots for ages. To be fair, they probably haven't noticed.

I don't like the lack of cashiers and I don't like the two tier pricing.

Haven't seen the advert.

shuggles · 14/11/2024 20:06

StarSlinger · 14/11/2024 18:35

I'm also woke and proud.

You're "woke and proud," yet you're fawning over a TV advert that plays heavily on racist and misogynistic stereotypes, showing a classic depiction of a wife chasing after a lazy old man, and a sassy "yes queen slay!" depiction of a black woman.

But I guess nothing is more "woke" these days than actively indulging in stereotypes.

Ilikemymenlikeilikemycoffee · 14/11/2024 20:07

It didn’t feel very festive… doesn’t have Christmas music and may be a tad sexist but won’t stop me shopping there!

schoolsoutforever · 14/11/2024 20:07

But they are just people wearing makeup aren't they? Make up doesn't make you a women so why are we assuming that they are presenting themselves as women?

People get het up about a lot of nothing.

Edit: this was supposed to have copied a post upwards! Didn't work!

Cailleach1 · 14/11/2024 20:08

WinterBones · 14/11/2024 19:06

all the moaning i've seen online has been from nasty old white men who feel like they're being left out.

poor babies.

How do you know those (at least one, or some) ‘old white men’ don’t identify as young Javanese women? An application and addition of this, a padded that, and Bob’s your youthful Javanese auntie. You need to be more sensitive, and not invalidate others possible identities. Some might class your assumption as ignorant bigotry, and tell you to educamate yourself.

rayofsunshine86 · 14/11/2024 20:08

It's all full of drag, "slay", talks about a "them", anti-men, blah blah consumer nonsense.

I like Adjoa Andoh though. She's got a great voice.

kierenthecommunity · 14/11/2024 19:34

So you download the app and register your empty beauty and health products with them. Once you have five banked, if you need to buy anything that’ll be above £10 at Boots, you go to one that is in the scheme and take the empties. You then deposit them and you pretty much instantly get a voucher that you scan at the till, that gives you 500 points when you spend a tenner.

Amazing, thank you!

HolyPeaches · 14/11/2024 20:09

& half the people (mostly men) who I’ve seen that said they’re boycotting, look like they’ve never used a bar of soap in their life. So I doubt Boots will be missing out on their custom.
