To not like the John Lewis christmas ad this year

Another light hearted one from me 🤭

I like the fact that it's all women but it isn't moving enough this year tbh

A bit of a let down

  1. i thought she or the sister would be dead at the end too.
  2. the time travel being non-linear made it super-hard to follow
  3. she clearly doesn’t give a shit about her sister or she wouldn’t have left getting her a present until 15 minutes before they were meeting up!
ifIwerenotanandroid · 15/11/2024 09:40

Somebody mentioned Chanel - I still love their 'Team' ad.

Marchflower · 15/11/2024 10:55

I don’t have a sister and I’ve always been a bit sad about that, so I don’t connect with the advert. I quite like the concept but the casting with the two women looking so similar and the flashbacks not being linear made it a bit confusing!

WhitePoinsettia · 15/11/2024 11:00

I used to work in a department store.

Please do not come in shopping 15 mins before the shop closes on Christmas Eve or the shop assistants will want to strangle you with the ribbon or smash the box over your head.

Pussycat22 · 15/11/2024 11:03

Hate the M and S ad!

Needmorelego · 15/11/2024 11:03

@WhitePoinsettia indeed. Especially if the customer decides to wander behind the racks into some kind of memory Narnia 😂

Needmorelego · 15/11/2024 11:07

So what merch are John Lewis going to try flog this year connected to the ad? An empty box.....?
I'm guessing they got stuck with too many unsold products of that plant thing last year.

mm81736 · 15/11/2024 11:12

I like it, back on form JL!

the80sweregreat · 15/11/2024 11:12

Maybe an empty Christmas box to fill with your ' own memories' of finding that special gift before they shut.

WildFlowerBees · 15/11/2024 11:14

No emotion from me, it's just an ad isn't it. I'm happy that for once it's not telling us all how we should behave #be kind and all that crap. None of the Christmas ads are great this year, perhaps they've read the room for once and have realised we're sick of the saccharine messages. Just tell us what you're selling and let us get on with our day.

DonnaSummet · 15/11/2024 11:16

I really love it and found it quite moving but I think they missed a trick with the reminiscing parts I think they should have been in chronological order and focusing on Christmas memories but all in all i think it's the best one they've done in a few years...I hated last year's one

Barleysugar86 · 15/11/2024 11:17

I somehow missed that it was a sister thing, and spent the first watch thinking she was trying to work out her daughter's present. All the get outs, it's like you'd expect from a tv daughter- mum. I have three sisters and we are fairly close but this doesn't really resonate with my feelings about them or how I remember our childhood. It's a fine advert though, it's a bit silly the christmas advert is made out to be such a big thing anyway,

Have you seen the Guardian’s thoughts on it?

amp.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2024/nov/14/john-lewis-christmas-advert-shopping

That's hilarious, and spot on!

VivianLea · 15/11/2024 11:39

I liked it.

I know that it's their "thing" but I have a visceral dislike of adverts that try and get you to feel as much manufactored emotion as possible. I mean ok, yeah, if you put sad music over a quick story of someone who is sad and alone at Christmas but then something miraculous but bitter sweet happens, I will probably cry. It's a built in reaction for me. But it feels cheap - I don't feel those emotions on a deep level, I don't really see why I am being asked to emote in this way over an advert for a shop, and the background knowledge that it's just to get people talking for profits irks.

This one doesn't overstep. It shows history and love between two family members, but portrays it realistically at Christmas against the backdrop of rushing around like mad trying to find something that the person will actually like and find meaningful

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/11/2024 11:41

If we're talking women in their adverts they'll never beat "Always a Woman" for me: https://www.google.com/search?q=john+lewis+always+a+woman&oq=john+lewis+always+a+woman&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyDggAEEUYJxg5GIAEGIoFMggIARAAGBYYHjINCAIQABiGAxiABBiKBTIKCAMQABiABBiiBNIBCDg4ODNqMGo3qAIAsAIA&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:d2604bc7,vid:jYOsWWKHZVw,st:0

Didn't like this one though - it just doesn't feel like anything much

StringOrNothing · 15/11/2024 11:41

I bought the tie-in pyjamas from last year's John Lewis adverts. They sold very badly and ended up being sold half price because they were in Christmas colours being sold at Christmas but really light weight cotton.

But actually they were the best buy ever when I wore them in the summer because lightweight light coloured cotton PJ's always end up being slightly transparent, whereas dark ones are fine for answering the doorbell, bringing in the bins, having breakfast while staying with your in-laws etc. Plus: Venus Fly Traps FTW.

VivianLea · 15/11/2024 11:46

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/11/2024 11:41

This one makes me feel physically sick at how quickly life goes, it makes me feel like I'm about to die! And I would never know it's a JL advert.

That’s the John Lewis one!

RedPony1 · 15/11/2024 12:41

It made me feel.... nothing. Very dull!

Not enjoyed a JL advert for a few years now!

the80sweregreat · 15/11/2024 12:56

I didn't like the Venus fly trap one much.
That was criticized for showing Mums and not a dad I think! Always something eh!

Needmorelego · 15/11/2024 13:10

Aren't the majority of John Lewis customers female though?
Surely that's their market.
I think John Lewis have a technology (ie telly's, laptops etc) department but do they even sell "men's things" (ie clothes and accessories)?
I actually have no idea.

Yes they have a pretty large menswear department, sell a bunch of luggage, sports kit, furniture, and the type of high end kitchen gadgets that appeal to a certain sort of man.

They still sell much less to men than to women because men buy less clothes, children's stuff, haberdashery, handbags, cosmetics, and perfume. But it must be a sizeable amount.

Needmorelego · 15/11/2024 14:10

@StringOrNothing thanks. It's a shop I rarely go in.
As a child our trips to a Big Department Store was BHS or C+A 🙂

WhitePoinsettia · 15/11/2024 18:56

TBH I think this Christmas is a bit meh. It’s mid Nov and I’m usually counting down the days. I still feel like it’s September.

The ads are crap, everyone feels blue and the Christmas cheer is not taking hold.
