I like the fact that it's all women but it isn't moving enough this year tbh

A bit of a let down

Not a patch on previous years. Also a hard watch if you have lost a precious sister as I have.

Haven't seen it yet, so I will revisit the thread once I've watched it.

I’ve just watched the official JL xmas ad. And my, how passive aggressive. “What took you so long?” “You.” I bet it’s a glitter bomb and a dog turd in that box as she’d remembered how much she disliked her sister.

I liked that bit as it’s exactly how my sisters and I talk to each other.

It seemed a bit over nostalgic to me.

I like it but it should have Christmas music.

Just watched it again and I love it even more. Love the bit where she spills the beans that her sister is having a boy, and the part where she can’t join her dancing with her (presumably late) mum is well done and captures all the bitter sweetness of memory.

Honestly, I’m an advertisers’ dream. Such a sucker for things like this. It’s a lot like the Always a Woman ad someone mentioned earlier although IIRC that one wasn’t a Christmas ad.

Yes I found I bit... is that it?! (channelling 'Business Time' by Flight of the Conchords).

It also seemed really contrived in terms of the boho sister and the straight-laced sister.

I really loved it (just googled it!). Very emotional.

Apparently JL are doing 3 Christmas adverts this year, there's another one to come....

I hope the others are better than this one. It had no emotional impact at all.

I loved it and shed a tear at some of the memories. It was gently understated and poignant which felt appropriate. Have always loved the song and the competition to find a new artist to cover the song on the advert shown on Christmas Day is clever. Well done JL!

I thought their Christmas ad was the pink jumper one. I can't watch that as I just lost my mum and her gift to me last year was a pink jumper.

I’m surprised nobody has commented on how the Aldi carrot with the fake boobs on the end looks exactly like a penis as it appears half way through the advert. It’s an absolute classic.

I couldn't understand it at all.

Aw…she loves her sister so much that she leaves it until the last minute, waits until the shop is nearly closed and picks up some random old shit in a blind panic.

Reminds me of my husband’s approach to Christmas shopping.

Couldn’t follow what was going on. I’ll have to give it another watch.
I was also confused by the fact there was another John Lewis advert about a pink jumper ( which I did quite like), but apparently that one is not the John Lewis Christmas advert 😮

The waitrose one is my favourite.

I watched it but it just felt too busy.....not up to usual john Lewis standard

This national obsession of analysing and gushing comments over these fucking Christmas adverts - they’re for stores/supermarkets - to encourage you to buy their stuff - it’s totally manipulative and self-serving. It’s now a competition as to who can produce the biggest tear jerker - fuck off! If you want real tear jerkers go onto itv 3 etc with all the adds for dying kids and neglected animals - they’re real and meaningful and money spent on what they are representing is actually worthwhile. I’ll never understand why ppl ‘enjoy’ these saccharine ‘weepie’ commercials.

I didn't get it either until i just read the guardian article.........bring back the penguin soft toy and the little boy I say 🐧
