To not like the John Lewis christmas ad this year

Another light hearted one from me 🤭

I like the fact that it's all women but it isn't moving enough this year tbh

A bit of a let down

I also loved the guardian article though

Ilikewinter · 14/11/2024 11:12

Humm, it's OK, bit confusing at first til I got the jist of it. I used to love the Xmas adverts but for me they peaked with the dog on the trampoline!

LostTheMarble · 14/11/2024 11:13

Also, any excuse to listen to Sonnet/The Verve! Thank you JL for using the original, not some abomination of a remake this year.

MumOfOneAllAlone · 14/11/2024 11:03

Yeah, it's just fine, I got more feeling out of the boots and lidl adverts. And the sad o2 one 🤭

Well Boots are being boycotted for their ad.

Partly by EDL / GB News types because the black actor commented on the racial make up of the monarchy some years ago

Partly by some more L / feminist groups because there is reference to a person who is ‘they’. I think.

Turn off the telly, go shopping, live your life! It’s the only way.

Hoolihan · 14/11/2024 11:22

I love the ad! Sweet, nostalgic, festive. Made me a bit teary about my darling sisters.

GabrielFaure · 14/11/2024 11:23

I liked it. It captured that experience of knowing someone for years- how you still know them at all stages of life and the past informs the present. I feel like that often with my (grown up) kids- that I can look at them and still see the baby and the child and the teenager. I find it immensely moving and JL have tapped into that quite effectively.

I disagree with the Guardian article- nearly all the JL Christmas ads have linked the emotional story with the “and now spend some money” message- they just do it in a way that you don’t quite realise it’s being done. Think of the pay off to the boy and the penguin, or Elton John, or that early one about the boy waiting to give his parents a gift.

52crumblesofautumn · 14/11/2024 11:23

Loved it - much better than all their other ads...that's what Christmas is to a lot of us, rushing around packed shops trying to figure out which meaningless piece of crap might mean something/be wanted.

MumOfOneAllAlone · 14/11/2024 11:24

OliviaRodrighost · 14/11/2024 11:10

I felt like I was missing something. I found it quite confusing and then the end was very meh.

Love the Waitrose ads with Matthew McFadyen and co.

Yeah, I like the idea of a mystery plus it makes you want to watch their ads

Omggg, youre right about that, people need to get outside more

I liked how sparkly the boots one is 🤭, far more engaging than the jl one

I feel like my local shops haven't really done it up onbthe christmas decorations front either tbh, except maybe the central London ones

Its true, they got the rushing about bit right

I hadn't seen it

I already feel more Christmassy having just watched it 🤭

I don't actually get what's going on tbh .
My favourite is always the man on the moon and the little girl with her telescope

Ponoka7 · 14/11/2024 11:34

Better than your child a Christmas present (trampoline) covered in animal shit and the dead ones the foxes would have ripped apart (2016).

FavouriteTshirt · 14/11/2024 11:34

I'm pretty ordinary by Mumsnet/media standards... I found it really relatable!!

No particular heartstrings moments... just the dash and family dramas of Christmas and reminding us that it's quite nice to actually shop at JL!!

And Sonnet is a clever choice... probably a coming-of-age song for their target market... and a cracker at that.

cardibach · 14/11/2024 11:39

Why are there two ads? I’d only seen the pink jumper one and assumed I’d made a mistake and it wasn’t John Lewis, but it is…
Very confused. Like the jumper one, don’t like the sisters one. It makes no sense.

Needmorelego · 14/11/2024 11:43

Doesn't give me the urge to pop to John Lewis.
Their ads never do really.
It's very forgettable plus Boots had a "sisters" add a few years ago plus there was another similar one for something else that I can't even remember what. They all blur into one.

Jewell25 · 14/11/2024 11:44

My sister died this year. It made me cry.

Oh boy, so sorry 💔

Phase2 · 14/11/2024 11:45

I thought it was crap, thought it was going Narnia to start with and then it was just a load of boring memories. If she'd picked up stuff and been catapulted to a memory it would have made more sense. Utterly rubbish.

CaptainBlondebeard · 14/11/2024 11:45

Meh - doesn’t do much for me. And I can guarantee that if I had been kept waiting outside a shop in the cold for my sister, and then she’d come out and blamed me, that would 100% end up in an argument! 🤣

Ilikewinter · 14/11/2024 11:46

In so sorry, I know how you feel, my mum died 12 months ago this Sunday and the Tesco advert is about mum/grandma memories. I can't watch it.

dihydroxyphenethylamine · 14/11/2024 11:46

So sorry for your loss Jewell25

Needmorelego · 14/11/2024 11:46

Also that branch of JL was very calm for a shop closing in 15 minutes on Christmas Eve.

Marabousfy · 14/11/2024 11:48

Bloody love it! But then I do have a sister… and as for that Guardian ‘review’ Oh do fuck off Stuart, who pissed in your chips!
How DARE an ad for a department store be about shopping. The bastards!
