To think this is an unacceptable wage?

I'm a qualified teacher with 21 years' experience who has just started supply so flexibility with a poorly husband and three kids of my own.
Just did a full day supply (8.30-3.30) and came out with £112 net.
Hubby thinks decent wage, I think piss-take!
Opinions please!

@IOSTT You may benefit from a basic online maths course?
If a bill is £129 and someone is paid £112...

Being rude to people doesn't help your case. @IOSTT is absolutely right that your gross pay is a lot more than £16ph, especially if lunch and breaks are unpaid. The fact it is less than you wanted/needed is irrelevant. £16ph net represents £22+ph gross, which is a good rate of pay.

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 14:37

@prh47bridge Come on, it was a goady comment which added nothing (from someone who is probably wealthy so has no clue). I don't suppose she struggles to pay her rent or will be eating jacket potatoes yet again for dinner. A wonderful ECT colleague of mine is struggling even more and using food banks.
Nobody appears to want to say what it is they do for work or earn - I wonder why that is?
I am a little bit disgusted (but perhaps not surprised) how little teachers are valued nowadays.
But as I say, irrelevant now really as stepping out of the supply to do cleaning.

How much do you think you should be paid?

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 14:46

@BeensOnToost Well perhaps more than a cleaner if I'm permitted to say that?

@ihaterain2024 yeah, I'm sure you're not wrong. I personally wouldn't work somewhere that didn't offer living wage to their lowest paid staff.

MidnightMeltdown · 14/11/2024 14:53

It seems like a normal teachers wage, but surely you would know that with 21 years of experience? 🤔

For the record, I think that teachers in general are paid poorly for the job that they do, but so are lots of other people. Wages haven't kept up with the cost of living.

Thanks all. I've been looking into alternatives and there's a lady looking for a cleaner one day per week in our village. It's £16 p/h but also a bonus of no travel so I'm going to pop and see her to talk about that.

If you can afford to live of working a couple of hours a week go for it.

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 14:57

@MidnightMeltdown I've only just started doing supply. It's not a "normal" teacher wage, no. I knew that, but didn't expect it to be as low as it is.

OP posts:
Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 14:58

@Differentstarts It's one day a week. I'm a class teacher 2.5 days a week. On a disgustingly high wage for what I do(!)

There’s been a real attack on schools and education and educators the last few years. Woefully underpaid, underfunded and looked down upon. Makes me question why the education system isn’t more valued by everyone. What use is a society of undereducated citizens?

Well as £16 NET per hour was your earnings from supply you’ll earn less at that cleaning job…. or are you planning on breaking the law OP? Undeclared income is tax evasion.

According to Google the average teachers salary is about 35k (or £18 per hour).

It sounds like you are on the equivalent of 37k, so a bit above average?

Unfortunately some of us don't have a choice, its either this or nothing.

That is rich (no pun intended) coming from someone who clearly hasn’t grasped gross v net pay.

BobbyBiscuits · 14/11/2024 15:16

@ihaterain2024 gawd I know. I don't think I really would have the choice either. Other than I know one firm that does it. I think living wage should be law. But then employers can't afford to take people..it's really hard.

Don’t forget that’s £16 before tax, so you’ll end up with less than that, so it’s less than the £16 post-deductions that you’ve earned doing supply.

So are you on emergency tax at what is essentially your 2nd job? That will affect your net take home if so.

StickyWikkit · 14/11/2024 15:22

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 10:14

May I ask what it is you all do in terms of work and pay?

What was the amount before all the deductions?

HellofromJohnCraven · 14/11/2024 15:22

I guess that's an issue with supply roles though. They want you to fill in for a day, or a week. Really your decades of experience are a moot point to the schools. They need a qualified person for that moment in time.
Do different agencies pay more?

Mnetcurious · 14/11/2024 15:27

StickyWikkit · 14/11/2024 15:22

What was the amount before all the deductions?

Op has already given that figure somewhere in the first few pages. It’s been pointed out many times throughout the thread that it’s gross figures which are needed for comparisons to be made but op keeps using the £16 post-tax amount and comparing it to other hourly rates which are gross amounts.

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 15:28

@Mnetcurious Of course. But not much less for a lot less stress and responsibility.

Bex5490 · 14/11/2024 15:31

All teachers IMO should be paid more.

I think in relation to what full time teachers get paid, it’s fair.

You said yourself you’re doing supply for an easier life so you recognise that it’s less demanding so surely that should be reflected in the salary.

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 15:31

So I'm thinking aloud here but... does anyone know minimum household income to qualify for social housing? With our rent likely to go up yet again and no security is it worth considering? A friend said it may also help with the bedroom situation so 4 yo doesn't have to share with us but not sure? We're currently private rented - 3 bed (kids 4, 14, 17).

@WaitingForMojo What is your role in law may I ask and what do you earn ph?

I'm a layer in public sector and earn £45k so seems good to me!

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 15:32

@Bex5490 I also work as a class teacher. I didn't know the pay difference would be so much. Of course I expected it to be quite rightly less, however.
