To think my friend should not use her tumble dryer on lovely warm dry days.

My friend is lovely, she's supportive, considerate and fun to be around, but one thing that I cannot agree with is the fact that she uses her tumble dryer 365 days a year.

It's on most of the day. She says she uses it to cut down on ironing. I have tried to pursuade her to hang it outside on many occasions but she just laughs it off. I think the more I mention it the more she digs her heels in.

I know it's none of my business but it bugs me, that she can be so ignorant about it.

Would it annoy anyone else, or is the problem mine?

your problem i think tbh

nkf · 27/04/2008 16:09

Yours. Definitely.

FloridaKbear · 27/04/2008 16:10

Doesn't make sense but not everyone feels the same way about get excited like me about a good drying day hanging on the line. I do finish my towels off in the dryer to soften them even in summer but they are practically dry from the line first.

FAQ · 27/04/2008 16:10

blimey what is she drying to have it on most of the day 365 days a year

christywhisty · 27/04/2008 16:11

YABU

I have a garden but it's full of trees so no where to put a line.

avenanap · 27/04/2008 16:11

I'm sure she'll start to cut down once she recieves her elecricity bill. I use mine when the weather's nice. I have hay fever, ds is asthmatic, if I leave them out to dry I end up quite ill.

blinkingthreetimes · 27/04/2008 16:12

Mines on almost every day I have 5 dc and not much room for a decent washing line .

beaniesteve · 27/04/2008 16:13

I don't think you are being unreasonable in worrying about the impact it has on the environment and her home environment and I would secretly judge someone who used a tumble dryer when it's not neccesary, but on the other hand it is her choice and gettng annoyed about it isn't going to make any difference. I guess just try to ignore it and do what you think is right. I'd give up on trying to persuade her - she obviously doesn't care.

josta · 27/04/2008 16:14

Her DH pays the electricty bill so it's not an issue for her. She has a big garden.

I can see that it might, on a hypothetical level, be slightly annoying (though not even sure that's the right word) but as a trait in a real life person, a person who I otherwise loved, I couldn't get worked up. At all. And I say that as someone who chooses not to use a tumble dryer because of their energy consumption. (and I cant even hang y washing outside without it coming in stinking of city).
I sincerely hope your green credentials are ship-shape for you to be so judgemental on this issue.

Spidermama · 27/04/2008 16:16

I frequently find other people's wasteful ways despressing but there's not much you can do unless you want to try a bit of friendly campaigning.

I've changed some small things because of comments from others. It doesn't always work but it might be worth a go.

The problem is that people feel defensive when they know they're wrong so sometimes it's just not worth leaving yourself open to it. (As I predict this thread will show )

Twiglett · 27/04/2008 16:16

when I line dry stuff it gets crispy .. I have discovered one has to time it right and bring it in before it turns

most of the time I can't be fagged and use the tumble dryer to be honest

josta · 27/04/2008 16:16

Yeah Beaniesteve I suppose I'm trying to my bit and it'a not worth getting het up about....

Spidermama · 27/04/2008 16:17

Mine's on less than once a month and I have four children. I don't think there's any excuse to live so wildly beyond your means and beyond the means of the planet.

beaniesteve · 27/04/2008 16:18

Lol at Spidermama

I don't have a tumble dryer and hang my washing either indoors or out depending on the weather.I doubt I will ever get one but of course I have used them. I have a tiny garden but with lots of lines going back and fore in a space of about 2 metres, it's not ideal but it's all I have and all I need.

Spidermama · 27/04/2008 16:20

I find the 'can't be fagged' attitude of Twiglett and others deeply depressing and all too widespread. They know about over consumption and the effect it's having, they have children and are likely to have grandchildren and yet they 'can't be fagged.'

MamaG · 27/04/2008 16:20

I don't even have a tumble drier! Do I win?

bringmesunshine · 27/04/2008 16:20

unless your are paying her electricity bill I would find other things to nose fret about

I use mine for towels, all the childrens clothes, pants and socks....even in the summer. I can't bear washing hanging on radiators I live in a house not a laundry.

girlfrommars · 27/04/2008 16:21

I get ridiculously excited on good drying days

You're not going to change her mind though, so you might as well save your breath.

josta · 27/04/2008 16:21

JV, my 'green credentials' have got better over the last couple of years, but I've always tried to recyle clothes, furniture, etc.

I'm not saying that it's wrong to use a tumble dryer as I have one of my own, I just don't use it from spring-autumn unless it's peeing down, but hey that's my choice.

OP posts:
FranSanDisco · 27/04/2008 16:21

Life's too short to hang out all those small bits. Yesterday ws beautiful for drying washing but today is shite so the dryer's on.

muggglewump · 27/04/2008 16:23

I never use mine, it costs too much.
Clothes go on the radiator and then only when I need the heating on. I actually plan to wash on colder days when I know I'll need the heating anyway. As soon as the garden's sorted it'll go on the line whenever possible.
Still though, I couldn't care less how someone else chooses to dry their clothes

allgonebellyup · 27/04/2008 16:24

i get really annoyed with people who use tumble driers, ESPECIALLY in the summer.
Its lazy.
Its wasting a lovely warm day when the clothes could be outside.
Its bad for the environment.
Its bad for your bills.

at lazy people

FAQ · 27/04/2008 16:24

No Mama you don't win, I don't own a tumbler drier either and I believe at the moment I still have one more child than you do

avenanap · 27/04/2008 16:25

To be honest with you, it causes more damage to the environment if she travels to the corner shop in her big gas guzzler every day, then spends the school holidays jetting off to europe. She may recycle, walk every where, use energy saving light bulbs, who knows. It's down to choice how she dry's her washing. The fact that she's not having to do ironing means that she's not using the electricity to run the iron so it's not as bad as it seems. It uses alot of gas (which is more expensive then electricity) to have the radiators on all night trying to dry clothes. I used to have to do this before I had my dryer, now my son's asthma is alot better, my hayfever is not as bad and my house no longer looks like washerwoman Wendy's Laundrette! I don't drive, don't go on holiday, I recycle, use energy saving devices and lightbulbs, I don't need to have my heating on just to dry the clothes. I don't think using a dryer is that bad.
