To think my friend should not use her tumble dryer on lovely warm dry days.

My friend is lovely, she's supportive, considerate and fun to be around, but one thing that I cannot agree with is the fact that she uses her tumble dryer 365 days a year.

It's on most of the day. She says she uses it to cut down on ironing. I have tried to pursuade her to hang it outside on many occasions but she just laughs it off. I think the more I mention it the more she digs her heels in.

I know it's none of my business but it bugs me, that she can be so ignorant about it.

Would it annoy anyone else, or is the problem mine?

Everyone should have a personal carbon allowance which they 'spend' on what they want.

I would choose to spend mine on extra water to grow veg and a tumble drier because I'm not at home to put it out or take it in.

Frankly unless you know their whole carbon output is more than yours you shouldn't really be judging

Fullmoonfiend · 27/04/2008 16:50

ha ha, if it is very very hot and sunny your clothes get stiff on line but I live in the north. Last time my clothes came off the line crispy was in 1997....the sun shone for a whole week IIRC. Mostly they are cold and floppy (and still a little damp)

lazy lazy lazy

WanderingTrolley · 27/04/2008 16:51

She's lovely, supportive, considerate and fun to be around, yet the sticking point in your friendship is how she dries wet laundry?

Crivens.

Have you thought of getting a hobby?

allgonebellyup · 27/04/2008 16:52

Laurie youre not at home ever?
Not first thing in the morning or last thing at night?

i work full time too, am a single parent, and i find the time..!

Disenchanted · 27/04/2008 16:53

PMSL,

sometimes this place is so weird.

Some woman is sat out there totally oblivious that a gaggle of 20 women are critisizing her 'drying habits'.

christywhisty · 27/04/2008 16:54

Totally agree with Twiglett. We all have our own tolernences. I am sure the OP probably does things others don't approve.
I use my tumble dryer all the time, but I don't drive myself and walk most places if I'm not in a rush and donn't have alot to carry. We chose a long time ago before being green became fashionable not to have a second car.

onlyjoking9329 · 27/04/2008 16:54

my tumbledrier is on everyday, so shoot me

Disenchanted · 27/04/2008 16:55

allgonebellyup I wouldn't want to find the time. I am certainly not lazy and I don't think its fair to say that to someone just because they choose no to hang their washing on a line.

For me its nothing to do with the time or effort of doing it, i just don't like the end result.

RubberDuck · 27/04/2008 16:55

The only thing I find is stiff are towels - I do tumble dry them but am going to try the "bring it in when it's just damp" to finish them off I think. I'm not normally very organised at getting stuff in (just leave it out there all day) but I'll see how I go.

The other thing I tumble dry is large bedding when it's rainy - I just don't have the hanging room.

Everything else goes onto an airer or a washing line.

Disenchanted · 27/04/2008 16:56

Plus it pisses it down constantly here

DarthVader · 27/04/2008 16:56

I don't own a tumble drier and don't want one.

However, if I started preaching to my friends about the best way to do things and telling them that their way is just plain wrong I would not expect to keep many friends!

If you feel like this perhaps you should just hang out with the self declared eco tribe!

Iota · 27/04/2008 16:56

I agree with Twiglett

I use my dryer a lot - it really does reduce ironing.

and I send my dh's shirts out too

I am green in other ways though - we do all the things Twigs mentioned

FAQ · 27/04/2008 16:57

FMF - sorry but I used to live in a country where it was ALWAYS very hot and sunny (well at least for most of the day, except in rainy season when it would rain in the afternoons), and I never had crispy clothes..

Lauriefairycake · 27/04/2008 16:59

I'm not at home enough to avoid the rain, no.

.

If we had personal carbon allowances there would be no quarrelling.

Been on a plane the last 5 years allgonebellyup ??

I mean, it's a totally irrlevant question unless we're talking carbon footprints......

Twiglett · 27/04/2008 16:59

I send shirts out because I no longer have a cleaner to do them

I don't iron

I don't have the nails for it

Iota · 27/04/2008 17:00

my osteopath told me that ironing was very bad for me - it makes my back sore

Twiglett · 27/04/2008 17:00

oh and 'cos I'm a lazy cunt

anyhoo gotta go .. mate is making us supper

Disenchanted · 27/04/2008 17:04

I iron constantly, I use a dryer ...

but we dont own a car and we havent been on a plane for 7 years.

And ... i don't know or bother (or possibly care )about my carbon footprint.

Thats probably sucicidal to say on here, but ah well.

Im guessing it would be low anyway.

I live in a 1st floor flat and would love to have a garden to hang out washing.

I do have a tumble drier but I usually hang the washing on a couple of airers next to the radiator or by an open window in the summer.

it'd probably nark me a bit. We need to have a mentality of collective responsibility for the environment.

ThingOne · 27/04/2008 17:14

OP - YABU and I'm assuming this is a wind up after the ironing thread.

I have hard water and my clothes get crispy if line dried or just left on the airer, so in theory I tumble them for a little before hanging them out or before they are completely dry.

However I am ill and some days I feel fine when I put the washing out but am not well enough to bring it in later. I really cannot manage. This means I use my tumble dryer more. So shoot me. I'd rather tumble dry than have the heating on when it's not needed.

Before I was ill I made every effort to make as minimal impact on the planet as I could. Now I just do what I can to give my kids a normal life. I care a lot about global warming and taking responsibility for my actions but at the moment they are luxuries I cannot afford.

Every time you feel so judgemental about somebody else's behaviour you should walk widdershuns round the nearest haunted tree seven times. If you're still feeling judgy I suggest eating more chocolate.
