To think my friend should not use her tumble dryer on lovely warm dry days.

My friend is lovely, she's supportive, considerate and fun to be around, but one thing that I cannot agree with is the fact that she uses her tumble dryer 365 days a year.

It's on most of the day. She says she uses it to cut down on ironing. I have tried to pursuade her to hang it outside on many occasions but she just laughs it off. I think the more I mention it the more she digs her heels in.

I know it's none of my business but it bugs me, that she can be so ignorant about it.

Would it annoy anyone else, or is the problem mine?

Don't be so farking nosy, OP

SheikYerbouti · 28/04/2008 14:26

If you had said that to me, I would have given you the washing basket and said "Oh, thanks for offering"

You'd be frightened of my TD usage.

In the winter, I have no choice but to use it, due to having no other way of drying washing.

Line gets used in the summer, but it's pissing down today - so my lovely tumble is on.

bergentulip · 28/04/2008 14:35

The only time my hand-washed dishes start to pile up is when I am spending too long on MN!!!
Same goes for the drying/ironing!

ThingOne · 28/04/2008 17:12

Well Rubber Duck I have been in both schools of thought re first blast and last blast. At the moment I follow the weather. If it sunny they go out first as it might be raining later .

onepieceoflollipop · 28/04/2008 18:00

ThingOne and on some days of course you have to do both (late Autumn/early Spring)

A quick whizz to de-crease and soften, then when they come in off the line another quick whizz to warm them and air them.

Lovesdogsandcats · 28/04/2008 18:39

Even without a washing line it is no excuse to use a tumble dryer. Cannot understand those of you who are saying yo have 'no choice' - of course you have a choice, you're just taking the easiest, laziest, most expensive way out.I have no line, I use old fashioned clothes racks! I have 2 and I put them out in back garden in summer and they stay in my bedroom in front of radiator in the winter. I leave window open a touch to avoid condensation.

To answer op - YANBU.

My neighbour always has her dryer on even though she has a line and even on nice days. it really annoys me too (yes, even though its none of my business)

scaryteacher · 28/04/2008 18:57

Errr, why shouldn't I take the easiest, laziest and most expensive way out? It's my money and my choice. I cannot stand having damp clothes around the house. I have a sweater drying rack for things that I cannot tumble dry like my cashmere sweaters, but apart from that I use the tumble drier.

Lovesdogsandcats · 28/04/2008 20:16

actually you're right lol.

I'm just biased cos my neighbour has her dryer on for HOURS in the summer and the thing makes a right racket. Can't hear the birds for the fucker.

oiFoiF · 28/04/2008 20:17

maybe you should mind your own

fairydust · 28/04/2008 20:21

I use my dryer all the time hate the feelin of clothes that have been lined dried and hate havin a washing line in garden..

southeastastra · 28/04/2008 20:27

i drape my undies on the bushes in the garden if i can't fit them on the line.

ThingOne · 28/04/2008 21:25

Just how big is your bush southeastastra?

pantiesandsussies · 28/04/2008 21:33

Ooh mrs thingone,

amytheearwaxbanisher · 28/04/2008 21:40

yabu although i do have a drier but much prefare to use the washing line and i find clothes are much harder to iron from the drier but each to their own

southeastastra · 28/04/2008 21:41

i have an ample bush

beakysmum · 28/04/2008 21:43

Scary teacher; because its damaging to the environment!!!!

We should all be minimising damage to the environment. Or have I missed something?

tori32 · 28/04/2008 22:00

YABU.
I always use a tumble drier because:-

  1. we have lots of trees with birds nests surrounding the garden, so you put it out to dry and end up having to re wash it as birds crap on it.
  2. My garden is like a stamp so dd1 would be forever running through it while she plays
  3. I don't have a big enough house to have airers up where it would be out of the way.
  4. The amount of clothes I go through at the moment due to dd2 (4wks) puking covering us both, I would not have enough clothes in time.
  5. I don't like the 'stand up washing like cardboard' when washing dries in the sun. I used to live in Cyprus and used a airer there as well never the washing line.
amytheearwaxbanisher · 28/04/2008 22:09

tori just having a 4 week old would more then excuse you

scaryteacher · 28/04/2008 23:03

Beakysmum - that's if you choose to believe the climate change industry of course. I could do a lot worse to the environment than have my tumble drier on, like rewash my clothes because the birds have crapped on them, or because my neighbours have decided to have a bonfire and they stink of smoke. Using the drier avoids the need to wash the same clothes again.

I'll be happy to avoid damaging the environment when someone actually comes up with some reasonable suggestions that will really make a difference, like dealing with the emissions from China perchance. Until that time, I don't feel my drier is really harming anyone. As I live in Belgium and the electricity is probably nuclear generated (safe and clean) I don't have a problem.

don't own a tumble drier and don't iron. we don't have a car either

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 28/04/2008 23:26

though we do have a dishwasher

CilC · 29/04/2008 10:32

Oh can not believe how heated people get about environmental issues! And how people choose to make other's feel guilty for their choices. I enjoy making my life easier. There are sooo many other more helpful and practical ways to help and do your thing. Next I will be hearing how we should resort to washing by hand!
Mother's making their life easy is a good thing. Now if you were to get me started on all the DH's I know who have recently bought gas guzzling mid life cars and drive (with no passengers except some golf clubs at a pinch)to and from work that gets me a little annoyed. If you were to mention some of the celebrities on the environmental rampage who own more than 6 houses which obviously need to be maintained/heated etc., have private jets and travel to and from all over the world and consume and waste an inordinate amount...then I might get on my high horse, but to challenge mums, many of whom work hard and take on so much about the fact they are trying to make their life easier well that just sucks!

Kewcumber · 29/04/2008 12:00

how long am I allowed to have my tumble dryer on if I recycle? I reduced my carbon foot-print by not adding biological children to the world so I assume that gives me a free pass for my tumble dryer for some years?

Loshad · 29/04/2008 23:22

I'm a line drying fan (note am awful at housework but for some reason get pleasure from seeing my washing blow in windy garden) but today i washed our bedding, hung it out, and went to school. when i got back it had rained so heavily the line had collapsed and whire duvet cover was lying sodden in the mud, so i had to rewash it, then tumble dry it - now which would have been the greener option
