To think my friend should not use her tumble dryer on lovely warm dry days.

My friend is lovely, she's supportive, considerate and fun to be around, but one thing that I cannot agree with is the fact that she uses her tumble dryer 365 days a year.

It's on most of the day. She says she uses it to cut down on ironing. I have tried to pursuade her to hang it outside on many occasions but she just laughs it off. I think the more I mention it the more she digs her heels in.

I know it's none of my business but it bugs me, that she can be so ignorant about it.

Would it annoy anyone else, or is the problem mine?

and yes i am proud to never be the owner of a drier either.

Spidermama · 27/04/2008 16:26

As long as you are maximising your time and getting the most of your own personal life, fuck the planet then eh? Sod those people round the other side of the world who will be wiped out by floods caused by global warming caused by our excesses.

Maybe you just don't believe what's happening. Or do you actually not care?

This is always puzzling to me.

MamaG · 27/04/2008 16:26

FAQ - gah. Ihave a dog as well?

allgonebellyup · 27/04/2008 16:27

i dont have heating on at night , just a bit during the day, and its enough to dry the clothes. Also have 2 airers.

CilC · 27/04/2008 16:27

After one too many bird droppings on my clothes I gave up and use my dryer all the time. It means I can wash at night and rarely have to iron. The water that comes out of my condenser dryer goes straight onto the garden. I don't get why you would be annoyed by this?

FAQ · 27/04/2008 16:27

How do you know she doesn't iron avenanap? I have several friends who tumble dry AND iron (thought not all day 365 days a year).

You don't need the heating on all night to get a load of washing done, I can get 2 loads of washing dry in the evening when the heating is on as normal - it's all taken off before bed (usually) and it doesn't look like a laundrette the following day.

Spidermama · 27/04/2008 16:28

I'm with you allgonebelly up and might I add I only have a drier because MIL bought it for me and I never use it. DH does about once a month or less.

I'm not saying I'm beyond scrutiny but I do my best and it does annoy me when people so blatantly, proudly, over-consume.

beaniesteve · 27/04/2008 16:28

ah but mama - by having one less child perhaps you are not contributing to over population (no offence FAQ ) and so you're in the lead.

Mind you - I am trying for my first and don't have a tumble dryer or a dog. So do I win?

FAQ · 27/04/2008 16:29

ermmm - I'm a single parent.........

blueshoes · 27/04/2008 16:30

If she hung it out today, it might have got wet because it rained after lunch.

avenanap · 27/04/2008 16:31

She must do alot of washing if it's on every day. I wash 3 loads a week, the dryer's on for 2 hours a week to dry them. If they were on a radiator the heating would be on alot more then this as my house is tiny.

I don't know if she irons or not, the op said she uses it as an excuse not to iron.

Spidermama · 27/04/2008 16:34

I don't iron or tumble dry. Both are ridiculous.

beaniesteve · 27/04/2008 16:34

I do iron, sometimes. Is this wrong?

Spidermama · 27/04/2008 16:35

Well shirts I can understand but anything else is plain wrong and bad.

josta · 27/04/2008 16:36

No she doesn't iron much because the tumble dryer takes most of the creases out.

I hate line hung washing. I really do.

FAQ · 27/04/2008 16:37

beanie - perhaps Mama doesn't win, I think (could have got the wrong person) she's pg again, she already has one of each - mine are all the same sex - so clothes, toys and books have all been handed down - no extra stuff for the opposite sex

josta · 27/04/2008 16:40

Wow, disenchanted, I can't believe that!

When I bring my washing in from the line and fold it straight away more often than not I can put it straight in the draw.

I love hanging it out and watching it blow in the wind, maybe I'm just weird.

Spidermama · 27/04/2008 16:40

PMSL! How can anyone hate line hung washing? What a waste of such a strong emotion.

Is it the fresh air smell which brings out the fury in you?

Spidermama · 27/04/2008 16:42

josta you're not weird. They are.

Free, fresh air versus costly carbon burning, clothes ruining nasty hot air. They even have to buy nasty chemicals to make it smell reasonable because the drier makes it smell a bit weird and burny.

Disenchanted · 27/04/2008 16:43

No, its just everythings so stiff.

I just don't like it at all, i prefer the dryer!

Twiglett · 27/04/2008 16:46

we all have different tolerances, and different ways we feel we are helping

as a household we have saver switches; energy saving lightbulbs; recycle paper, card, glass, plastic; use shopping bags rather than getting plastic bags; use dryer balls in the tumble dryer; turn off lights when not in room; put on jumpers when cold

so I use my tumble dryer .. big whoopy-do
.. I don't like crispy clothes, I don't always like the hanging out (have to put out line to begin with) and the bringing in .. I don't iron (but I do send shirts out to be ironed)

Twiglett · 27/04/2008 16:46

and I can't be fagged either

Fullmoonfiend · 27/04/2008 16:46

I don't use mine unless we have a prolonged period of crap weathe. I am eco-conscious, but mostly it's because we are skint and I beleive it really whacks your leccy bill up..
