Customers who yell at shop staff because contactless card requires a chip n pin payment

Gdn1 · 13/11/2024 14:03

Obviously don't read the T'snC's about their card. As the banks randomly decide on when a CnP payment is required. Some banks is totally random and some banks are when you done £x or certain number of transactions, whatever comes first.

It's the bank, NOT the shop/cafe/wherever that decides this. Please don't yell at the staff who are powerless, have no ability to lift the restriction up. Also if customers found they have the cash or pay with another card, the first card will need a chip n pin payment before you can use contactless.

People need to understand that they don't have to keep the random generated PIN that their bank issued to them. People can go to any ATM and change their PIN to something they will remember under PIN services. Some banks refuse customers to change their PINs to 1234, 1111 etc

It belongs to the merchant provider who is providing the card services.

No wording can be decided.

Yes that’s what I meant. The shop own the machine (or more specifically they are given it to use under the terms of their agreement with the company that enable them to accept cards) but they have no control over it and it says the same thing regardless of which bank’s money is being processed.

The message should be:

Random PIN check.

Not card declined.

Better psychologically and less likely to annoy the customer

sweeneytoddsrazor · 14/11/2024 18:42

I have been moaned at and sworn at about it but I don't think shouted at. I did however have a customer shout at me when I checked their £50 note was real. They literally yelled how dare you check my money you fucking m*&on I earn 10 times what a minimum wage monkey like you ever could.

Plenty of potential for piss taking there...assuming you didn't mind being fired.

"A £50 note. Wow, I've never seen such a thing. Let me just admire it and take it in"

Gdn1 · 14/11/2024 18:46

Also to let people know that the contactless chip which is hidden next or underneath exposed chip can break more often than the exposed chip. This is more likely with men who put card in back pocket and sit on it.

Shop staff have to check £50 notes. Anyone who shouts at staff because they need to check it are pathetic scum.

My friend who works at a Sainsburys Local had to refuse a bank note as it was withdrawn from circulation ten years ago and he claimed he only got it from the bank's ATM yesterday.

Not to derail, but when they go to the effort of having an actual bank branch there, but then decide that they won't accept cash - which is one of the very few banking things that you absolutely cannot do online - THEY (well, their high-up bosses) are the stupid ones.

It's the equivalent of going into a greengrocer's shop and them looking at you shocked and incredulous when you want to buy apples or carrots!

I agree with you. I once, many years ago, went to a service station to buy petrol vouchers and the woman at the counter said "We don't sell THOSE" - almost as though I had asked for heroin! Silly me, should I have gone to the greengrocers?

spuddy4 · 14/11/2024 20:49

The worst is when the contactless fails and they have to tap it again. People get very aggressive and think they'll get charged twice and obviously it's our fault.

Are they aggressive or do they want confirmation that they won't be charged twice... these machines are not infallible.
I am mid 50s and like a PP go to the supermarket almost every day ( never know what I want to eat that evening) and other shops at the weekend/during the week. Apart from maybe once seeing someone who was clearly very drunk and indiscriminately mouthing off, I have never seen ordinary shoppers "yell" at staff. They might tut to themselves if the card machine doesn't work, but if anything they are super friendly to staff who are sometimes actually not particularly helpful!!
Obviously this is my experience ( London and south/east)

I'm 65 and have gone to the supermarket several times a week for many years and I've also yet to see anyone "yell" at staff. I'm not in the UK however, maybe we are just nicer here Grin

Those who don’t believe customers shouting at retail staff, just ask them.

People who yell at shop/hospitality staff about anything are dickheads and should be barred.

Definitely. Horrible, anti-social, spoiled brats.

A fair few retail staff on this very thread have posted they have no experience at being shouted at

Edited

So: A group of people say that they have experienced something. Maybe not all of them but some of them

Some people say they haven't witnessed this so it can't be true
Some members of that group say they haven't experienced it.

Just because people haven't seen witnessed it or some people haven't experienced it does not mean it does not happen.

RamblinRosie · 15/11/2024 23:52

Oh, it happens!
In a Waitrose, in a naice area, I saw a woman throw two bottles of cleaning products at the cashier, simply because she wasn’t operating the till the woman had put her basket on. She moved her basket to the next till, then hurled its contents at the cashier. Then rushed out of the shop, fortunately not hitting the cashier.

I feel really guilty that I didn’t react by yelling for security, but I was totally gobsmacked. (I did offer to be a witness if there was any issue). If I ever see anything similar I will react.

Some people are just entitled pigs.

My friend was grabbed by the arm when she was leaving the checkouts to go home. A self entitled man grabbed her and yelled "you will serve me". Yet at the time, the store had no self scans and there were 4 other tills open.

Manager saw this and asked the man to leave.

Wow, that's crazy!

An adult woman doing the equivalent of a frustrated toddler putting their upturned bowl of spag bol in their hair like a crown; or a monkey at the zoo pelting passers-by with its own poo?!

Saymynamesaymyname1984 · 17/11/2024 23:33

YANBU, in 19 years of retail I have had the exact same treatment. People are so rude!

another annoyance for me is when they want cash back, they have to insert their card for this. When you tell them to insert they tap instead and start shouting because the transaction has already gone through😡

LlamaDuke · 17/11/2024 23:44

My bank requires customers to use their PIN after a certain number of contactless payments, to prevent fraud. Doesn't particularly bother me, not sure why people get so hot up about it.

Loub1987 · 13/11/2024 14:15

Who is shouting about this? I’ve never seen anyone do it!

Same here! Anyone I've ever witnessed this happening to (myself included) just puts their card in the machine and enters the PIN manually. No drama!

oldmanandtheangel · 18/11/2024 02:03

All these doubting people who have never worked with the general public!
I have had trolleys rammed into me and threats to 'see you outside afterwards' in retail.
In Covid, staff worked behind closed doors as pickers for online shopping.
One customer was hammering on our locked doors and asked if anyone could come out into the car park and give him a refund as he wasn't leaving without one.
When we re opened my team leader had a v long metal curtain pole thrown at her, javelin style.
A restaurant staff member had a plate of peas tipped over their head.
I've been called slag, tramp, fat bitch almost weekly. Tramp is a really regular one for some reason yet I'm well groomed, polite and helpful and wear a uniform, baffling really. My favourite insult was 'chubby redhead' - I asked if I could have it on my name badge but was refused ;)

People are so impatient. If card machine requires your PIN to pay. If you know it and doesn't bother you, the time it takes for putting card in, awaiting prompt to enter it, entering it takes about 10 seconds.

My friends who work in retail, they see customers with card over the machine as they are scanning the shopping (let the staff scan the shopping first) and need to press something to let card payment. These are the customers who shout at the staff for having to put in their PIN.

Thinking that those who shout at retail staff have never worked in retail/customer service. I have asked the question to someone who was shouting "Just asking, have you worked in retail or customer service". "No" "It clearly shows you not work in them".

What happened to the phrase treat others as you wanted to be treated yourself.

The worst I’ve ever seen is someone give a huff or tut, hell I might even have done the same myself, aimed at the machine mind you never the cashier! But if you’ve had people be that rude that’s horrible. Plus you’d have to be monumentally stupid not to know you can change your pin. It’s also not that hard to remember even the pin they send you is it? Usually it stays the same even if you get a new card, unless you change banks?? And you have to use the pin for the first payment anyway to activate it.

Ahwig · 22/11/2024 20:45

I once went to a large supermarket petrol station. It had about 20 petrol pumps. I was able to drive straight up to a pump. I put the petrol in and then went to pay
. As I got into the shop I saw loads of people in there all complaining. The contact less were not working. You could only pay either in cash or using chip and pin.
About 18 people were complaining that they didn't know their chip and pin and didn't have any cash . The poor cashiers. The cashier asked me if I knew my chip and pin. I did so all was good. The problem was if it happened in the supermarket you could put you shopping back but you can't take out petrol once it's in.
I did suggest to the cashier that they put a note on the pumps saying what the problem was because the situation was getting worse . I couldn't believe how many people didn't know their number. The cashier did ask someone if they had their number noted at home but not one of them had a clue. I have no idea how the situation was sorted because I had somewhere I had to be urgently but I was tempted to stay to watch. Hopefully it was a lesson learnt for some people and they did actually get a new PIN number but I suspect some people won't have done.
