Customers who yell at shop staff because contactless card requires a chip n pin payment

Gdn1 · 13/11/2024 14:03

Obviously don't read the T'snC's about their card. As the banks randomly decide on when a CnP payment is required. Some banks is totally random and some banks are when you done £x or certain number of transactions, whatever comes first.

It's the bank, NOT the shop/cafe/wherever that decides this. Please don't yell at the staff who are powerless, have no ability to lift the restriction up. Also if customers found they have the cash or pay with another card, the first card will need a chip n pin payment before you can use contactless.

People need to understand that they don't have to keep the random generated PIN that their bank issued to them. People can go to any ATM and change their PIN to something they will remember under PIN services. Some banks refuse customers to change their PINs to 1234, 1111 etc

People yell about this?

Good grief!

(I had heard that the neuro effects of covid are making us all that bit more stupid - I wonder if this sort of thing is how a dumbing down would start to make itself apparent)

Maybe! Except I have never had covid and I seem to be becoming thicker as I age. It scares me how much dumberer I'm becoming!

Topseyt123 · 13/11/2024 16:13

Only wankers get so get up and start yelling at cashiers over such a simple security check by their own bank.

Gdn1 · 13/11/2024 16:13

The reason I brought up this thread was I witnessed a few customers on my visits to shops who shouted vulgar things towards the staff as their card didn't work on contactless but had to pay with chip n pin.

On the few times when my card insists on a chip n pin payment when I am served by a cashier (usually use self scans) I have a laugh

OP posts:
lasagnelle · 13/11/2024 16:14

Whoever is doing this should have their bank card removed

Gdn1 · 13/11/2024 16:15

So the 16% think its OK to shout and scream at retail workers when their card requires a chip n pin payment.

It has never been acceptable and never will.

I don't really have a laugh but I do go ooh it hasn't done that for a while. It probably annoys them

Lovelysummerdays · 13/11/2024 16:16

I’ve never seen yelling. I did once have to get a non payment form at the petrol station as I couldn’t remember it. I know it but I just drew a blank. I’d cleverly saved it on my phone which had run out of charge so couldn’t use Apple Pay either. It was fine I popped back the next day, paid, apparently it happens at least one a day.

I don't know why. You're just explaining the intricate nature of the UK's chip and pin system.

Gettingbysomehow · 13/11/2024 16:20

I dont know why anyone would shout at the shop staff. Putting in your pin is nothing to do with them and its hardly a huge inconvenience.
But I guess some people are just ignorant and stupid much like the poster who had all their posts deleted.

If people haven't worked out by now that this happens every few weeks and is nothing to do with the cashier, then they are a bit backward.

Not forgetting that problem can be eliminated all together by just using Apple Pay, which never triggers a PIN entry requirement on a terminal as the security check is access to the phone :)

I'm wondering whether the same applies to Google Wallet for those of us who have android phones rather than apple ones?

I've used Google Wallet quite a bit now and never been asked for a pin. I do get asked occasionally if I am using a card.

Think bank counts mobile pay as a contactless so when you do pay with your card, it increases the likelihood of you having to inputting PIN

I was once behind an American who tried to pay with a card. It didn't work contactless, she insisted it didn't have a PIN, and when the cashier tried to do a signature transaction it turned out she clearly wasn't the cardholder. It was in the name of her husband Mr Xyz, who was outside in the car.

Needless to say, this was all the cashier's fault.

Those apps require facial recognition, pin or fingerprint to use the card so are far more secure than a contactless card so don't require pin.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 13/11/2024 17:04

I never know whether to be more astounded at the customers who can't remember their PIN or the ones who have it written down somewhere inside their wallet (or, even worse, on the back of their card).

Serencwtch · 13/11/2024 17:06

I've never been yelled at over that - a few tuts etc but most people get it.

Worse is when customers tap their card & then walk straight out without checking if it's gone through then get outraged when the security guard runs after them.

I've never felt the need to be rude at any retail or hospitality staff and I seriously look down on anyone who is.

Nor me. The public can be arseholes, and it’s got worse since Covid 😑

Having worked in shops extensively and been on both sides of this, I think the attitude of shop staff is the key determinant here. If the customer passes comment and you robotically say "it's random" or "it's the bank" in a computer says no voice, people will get pissed off. If you go "ah, typical, isn't it? Sod's law," with a sympathetic smile, you'll defuse it. They know it's random. It's still knocked them for six.

A lot of what I see shop staff being snapped at by customers is because customer service has gotten a lot worse and no one seems to know how to talk to other people to smooth things over or de-escalate things anymore. Manners are worse on both sides. You do occasionally get turds in the shop being nasty for the sake of it but most situations can be salvaged with people skills and effort.

Edited

Service all over, not just retail has improved a hundred fold since we became Americanized.
Even main post office staff are pleasant and they were famous for their surliness.
I was in the COOP yesterday when Oscar was called to wheel a lady's shopping out for her and load it in to her car. I remarked to her, Fortnam & Mason service.

i am constantly (2nd time in this thread) aghast at people who can't imagine that, say, a very elderly woman might - if feeling under pressure to be quick (imagined or real) - put in the wrong PIN.

Honestly people - think about what you're saying. (also i sometimes have a momentary complete blank-brain when i have to enter my PIN)

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 13/11/2024 17:33

I don't know why some people on this thread are taking such offence and saying "But I never shout at assistants so why are you accusing me/telling me off?!"

OP very clearly isn't referring to you!!

Obviously, it's still not the fault of the shop assistant in any way, but I do wish the bank machines could be re-programmed to say "Please enter your PIN to complete this transaction" rather than "Not authorised", "Declined" or similar.

They really should make it clear that it's a routine security check, rather than making you worry that you're unexpectedly skint or that there's been some kind of criminal activity using your card.

I agree completely that people who do react this way must be extremely hard of thinking, as well as nasty.

It is never the elderly who have trouble with their PIN. They have the number somewhere accessible (usually on a separate piece of paper in their wallet). Plus they are more wary of chip and pin and usually put the card and PIN in every time. It is the younger people who have about fifty cards, each with a separate PIN who forget the number.

I'm pretty old myself, so don't need a 'won't anyone think of the elderly' reminders.

Brefugee · 13/11/2024 17:35

great for you - for my mum, and several of her friends, not so much.

It was one scenario (that i have seen several times) that i could have mentioned, there are others.

Glad you're fine, your "I'm alright, Jack" attitude is pretty sucky tho

LlynTegid · 13/11/2024 17:40

There should be consequences. A system for the retailer to notify the bank, who then contact the customer to tell (or remind them) about conditions, and if there is a repeat, then the account is closed.

Ollybob · 13/11/2024 17:43

Honestly this happens daily but I've never been shouted at.
I suppose it doesn't help that the machine will say "declined" rather than "pin needed" (or similar)
I apologise and let the customer know it's just a pin check and problem solved.
Weirdly recently I've noticed pin checks being requested when a customer only has a phone, not sure if it's a glitch but we are able to sort by cancelling and requesting card payment again.

"Also if customers found they have the cash or pay with another card, the first card will need a chip n pin payment before you can use contactless."

I have no idea what that bit meant but okay, I will continue never shouting at shop employees.

Means they can't just use in the next shop they go to, they're still going to have to enter the PIN or have every transaction refused.

Mine did it fairly frequently when I changed jobs/the shops I'd use frequently on the way home. Once their AI had caught up with my new routine, I stopped getting so many PIN requests.

I suspect that people who shout and scream probably don't own the card they're using.
