Customers who yell at shop staff because contactless card requires a chip n pin payment

Gdn1 · 13/11/2024 14:03

Obviously don't read the T'snC's about their card. As the banks randomly decide on when a CnP payment is required. Some banks is totally random and some banks are when you done £x or certain number of transactions, whatever comes first.

It's the bank, NOT the shop/cafe/wherever that decides this. Please don't yell at the staff who are powerless, have no ability to lift the restriction up. Also if customers found they have the cash or pay with another card, the first card will need a chip n pin payment before you can use contactless.

People need to understand that they don't have to keep the random generated PIN that their bank issued to them. People can go to any ATM and change their PIN to something they will remember under PIN services. Some banks refuse customers to change their PINs to 1234, 1111 etc

And are you so fucking rude?

LittleRedRidingHoody · 13/11/2024 14:06

God this used to piss me off in retail! No, trying again (and again, and again) won't work if your bank has flagged you need to use chip and pin 😂 If you're so precious about it, get Apple Pay etc where these checks are not needed.

RoseAndRose · 13/11/2024 14:06

People yell about this?

Good grief!

(I had heard that the neuro effects of covid are making us all that bit more stupid - I wonder if this sort of thing is how a dumbing down would start to make itself apparent)

You've clearly never worked a till then 🤣

WinterBones · 13/11/2024 14:07

yelled, maybe not, but i've witnessed plenty of customers getting shitty with Cashiers over it. Even had to butt in when it happened with my Mum and she started in with a 'This is ridiculous' rant at the Cashier.

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/11/2024 14:08

People who yell at shop/hospitality staff about anything are dickheads and should be barred.

Do you really believe that people don't know this?

Comedycook · 13/11/2024 14:10

I used to work in a role that required me to take payments. This often happened. No one ever yelled at me.

LindorDoubleChoc · 13/11/2024 14:11

Thanks for the lecture. I will bear that in mind and cease to rant and yell at the shop staff when I'm asked for my PIN (about 1 in 10 transactions it feels like) so I've done my fair share of screaming in faces and behaving like an obnoxious goon over the past few years, let me tell you! But thanks to your timely post, I'll go away and have a long hard think about my behaviour.

Loub1987 · 13/11/2024 14:15

Who is shouting about this? I’ve never seen anyone do it!

SR71Blackbird · 13/11/2024 14:21

I’ve seen this happen, not often but always memorably. Once a man was so flabbergasted he said ‘you want me to put in my PIN, like an animal?’ Still makes me chuckle to recall it.

DysonSphere · 13/11/2024 14:22

I seen people start getting put out because the 'card reader clearly isn't working'l'. I've not personally seen people shouted at over it, but after being screamed at directly in my face over the most petty things working with the general public, I can believe it.

MorrisonsPlatter · 13/11/2024 14:23

My local shop requires a PIN about one in twenty times. Instead of the machine saying "please insert your card and enter your PIN" it would say "transaction declined". Very rude. I never got cross. They have a politer machine now.

I'd imagine it's because it's not their card. Or they forgot the Pin. I do kind of sigh internally when I need to do it but would never blame staff. It's just one tiny extra faff. But if you don't know/forgot, then you'll get people probably being arseholes. Not right at all. Some people can be so rude to retail staff. No idea how it makes their lives better.

Yes, I meant to be rude to you after your nasty post.

The OP had clearly had an experience for her to make that post. And the first response, yours. Hope you're proud.

Wendolino · 13/11/2024 14:29

I have never, ever seen, heard or heard of anyone screaming and shouting because they needed to use their PIN. The most I've heard is a mild tut.

@SR71Blackbird I'd love to see an animal input their pin with cute little paws 😂😂

Customers often get annoyed but mainly because they can’t remember the PIN. I tell them it’s a good thing the bank asks regularly as it ensures they remember their PIN and it’s a security check that someone else isn’t using the card . I live in a holiday resort and holiday makers are often asked for their PIN as they are away from their home “patch”.

Hoppinggreen · 13/11/2024 14:35

Never witnessed this, at most its a "oh dear, how embarrassing" but maybe it happens
