Customers who yell at shop staff because contactless card requires a chip n pin payment

Gdn1 · 13/11/2024 14:03

Obviously don't read the T'snC's about their card. As the banks randomly decide on when a CnP payment is required. Some banks is totally random and some banks are when you done £x or certain number of transactions, whatever comes first.

It's the bank, NOT the shop/cafe/wherever that decides this. Please don't yell at the staff who are powerless, have no ability to lift the restriction up. Also if customers found they have the cash or pay with another card, the first card will need a chip n pin payment before you can use contactless.

People need to understand that they don't have to keep the random generated PIN that their bank issued to them. People can go to any ATM and change their PIN to something they will remember under PIN services. Some banks refuse customers to change their PINs to 1234, 1111 etc

There's nothing wrong with forgetting your card PIN. Presumably it's different to your phone PIN and you might have more than one card again hopefully with different PINs

Tryingtokeepgoing · 13/11/2024 16:38

Not forgetting that problem can be eliminated all together by just using Apple Pay, which never triggers a PIN entry requirement on a terminal as the security check is access to the phone :)

The cost of buying an iphone would be a disproportionate solution surely

So the 16% think its OK to shout and scream at retail workers when their card requires a chip n pin payment.

It has never been acceptable and never will.

To be fair I don't think you've asked a clear AIbU question so posters have to interpret how you want them to vote

I don't suppose many people think you should scream at anyone although I would be interested to ever witness that

Farfromthemaddingbrows · 13/11/2024 18:29

I’m not sure why anyone would yell at shop staff about anything. Mind you, society seems full of people who can’t handle the most minor of setbacks without totally losing their shit, so maybe it’s understandable.

DinaofCloud9 · 13/11/2024 19:56

It's always Sainsburys petrol station that asks me to put my details in and the staff huff at me like it's my fault.

It is never the elderly who have trouble with their PIN. They have the number somewhere accessible (usually on a separate piece of paper in their wallet). Plus they are more wary of chip and pin and usually put the card and PIN in every time. It is the younger people who have about fifty cards, each with a separate PIN who forget the number.

I'm pretty old myself, so don't need a 'won't anyone think of the elderly' reminders.

Or even worse, a sticker on their card with four digit number. Oh what else can this number be?

I assume google pay works the same way, for those unwilling to pay for an iPhone

Frieda2024 · 14/11/2024 03:32

I have never witnessed this but if this is the case, those people who do shout need to read a bit more to find out how things work and anyone who treats customer-facing staff poorly is showing who they really are and need to be avoided (I am thinking of a date situation when the other person talks down to the front of house staff. Such a massive turn off!)

Can’t the employee politely point out that it is the bank who determines the need to use the PIN, not the shop? Or do they not listen to reason in their ‘fight mode’?

Flubadubba · 14/11/2024 03:54

Topseyt123 · 13/11/2024 16:55

I'm wondering whether the same applies to Google Wallet for those of us who have android phones rather than apple ones?

I've used Google Wallet quite a bit now and never been asked for a pin. I do get asked occasionally if I am using a card.

I often get asked to enter my phone PIN to confirm contactless via mobile. Not sure whether this si something my bank implemented or Google.

Getamoveon2024 · 14/11/2024 04:08

People shouldn’t be yelling at shop staff, full stop. It’s ridiculous.

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/11/2024 04:32

You couldn't make it up ... but my card was declined in my local Co-Op after I'd read this thread! I must pick up something up in there at least a couple of times a week.

Anyway, I'm fairly old but I entered the correct PIN for the card - I have 3 cards I use regularly and so 3 different PINS - without either the woman behind the till or me remarking on it at all. Fancy that.

I have never, ever seen, heard or heard of anyone screaming and shouting because they needed to use their PIN. The most I've heard is a mild tut.

Me neither. The things I read about happening on MN are bizarre to me. If it happens to me I calmly use my PIN, no issues at all.

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 13/11/2024 17:33

I don't know why some people on this thread are taking such offence and saying "But I never shout at assistants so why are you accusing me/telling me off?!"

OP very clearly isn't referring to you!!

Obviously, it's still not the fault of the shop assistant in any way, but I do wish the bank machines could be re-programmed to say "Please enter your PIN to complete this transaction" rather than "Not authorised", "Declined" or similar.

They really should make it clear that it's a routine security check, rather than making you worry that you're unexpectedly skint or that there's been some kind of criminal activity using your card.

I agree completely that people who do react this way must be extremely hard of thinking, as well as nasty.

Edited

I'm not in the UK, but the couple of occasions when I've had to enter a PIN the machine has asked me for a PIN. It certainly hasn't come up with any of the messages you've mentioned so obviously it can be done.

Having worked in shops extensively and been on both sides of this, I think the attitude of shop staff is the key determinant here. If the customer passes comment and you robotically say "it's random" or "it's the bank" in a computer says no voice, people will get pissed off. If you go "ah, typical, isn't it? Sod's law," with a sympathetic smile, you'll defuse it. They know it's random. It's still knocked them for six.

A lot of what I see shop staff being snapped at by customers is because customer service has gotten a lot worse and no one seems to know how to talk to other people to smooth things over or de-escalate things anymore. Manners are worse on both sides. You do occasionally get turds in the shop being nasty for the sake of it but most situations can be salvaged with people skills and effort.

Edited

I agree with this. I went into a bank a while ago to deposit some cash. The cashier said to me something along the lines of "We don't take cash, you'll have to go to XX bank", in a voice which suggested I was an idiot.

I've worked in customer service for years and would have said something along the lines of "Unfortunately we can't take cash here, but if you take it to XX bank, just along the street, they will be able to process it for you", accompanied by a smile and pointing in the direction of XX bank.

People skills seem to be disappearing, sadly, and when it just keeps on happening customers' tolerance tends to wear a bit thin.

DivergentTris · 14/11/2024 05:51

Loub1987 · 13/11/2024 14:15

Who is shouting about this? I’ve never seen anyone do it!

On one occasion a professional, regular customer behaved so badly, I told him he was not welcome back, a couple of others were on thin ice too.

Didn't happen too much to the extreme, but even when it wasn't that bad, seemingly decent people's behaviour was rather questionable at times.

Maybe they actually thought the customer was always right, but when they behave like that over something like that they are not and I would back my staff and take a very firm stance, It's not fair on the other customers either, very unpleasant for them too. It's not the environment I want either of them to be in.

Strangely though, like I said above, It was the seemingly decent people who had the potential for being the worst!

mind you…. i was never aware of school gate “cliques” and don’t have endless massive fallouts with my family (but these posters also seem to spend inordinate amounts of time with “toxic” families, even holidaying with them!)

Gdn1 · 14/11/2024 06:43

Training is non existent in shops.

Have a family member who has worked 40 years in the same supermarket. They went to a store about 35 miles away and had a mock up mini supermarket including a till. Did this for 7 full days.

Now new starters, get a roller cage by a manager and get told to put it out. Not once told to fresh, bread and produce needs to be rotated. The experienced staff such as my family member has to waste time in rotating. The store manager shouted at them in the midst of shoppers for wasting time. Well if you tell the newbies to rotate stuff, we wouldn't be doing this.

Family member went to another competitor as something she wanted was on offer and whilst there she took advantage of other offers. Noticed it was the same issue at that store.

It's funny... I have never witnessed a customer yell or even be rude to staff. Yet there are so many threads on here which state the opposite is true! Maybe I've just lived in polite places ( which does include London).

Even when shop staff ( eg in Boots) are looking bored/disiniterested/gossiping, customers always smile and say "excuse me" ( and usually give them bit of time to finish their private conversation/engage etc)

What my DH worked in retail he had a customer who couldn't remember his pin (well I assume he couldn't) and he was shouting at DH "what are you going to do about it? I'm not leaving without my fucking shopping." Unfortunately for him security guard disagreed and escorted him from the shop (minute his shopping). To this day I wonder what he actually expected DH to do.

Your DH is an abusive twat to you (I was on your other thread) so i wouldn’t be surprised if you don’t have the full story here

If people haven't worked out by now that this happens every few weeks and is nothing to do with the cashier, then they are a bit backward.

I work in a vets (so not many transactions below £100😂)... however. I'd say a good 60% of people always looked shocked/surprised when they have to put their card in. They tut, roll their eyes.
I lose count the amount of times I have to say "it's over a hundred, you have to put your card in". With replies of "ooh, do I?". In my head I'm saying, "yes, you fckin do!". But I'm polite and go along with this pantomime.
And even when the payment is below a hundred, they swipe. Machine's like "no, put it in".. they just keep trying and trying until I intervene and say "I think the machine wants you to put your card in". Responses are shocking. Mildly amusing. But when you hear them ALL THE TIME, it just becomes tedious. "Oh for god's sake", "not had to do this for a while".
Well, that's the point isn't it?!
People are stupid in the main.

Ahwig · 14/11/2024 08:42

I had private laser eye surgery and when I put my card in the machine, it said I had to call my bank. I did , she asked me some security questions and all was good. The reason for this was, the cost was a lot more than I would normally spend and it looked out of place.
The lady at the bank apologised profusely. I said there was absolutely no need. I was glad they were checking before authorising a large amount. The bank lady said that, my response was very unusual. Apparently most people got very cross.
The same thing happened when I put a deposit down on a car. Again I had no problem with this. Why would I be upset that my bank has seen it's something out of the ordinary for my account and wanted to check it was actually me before authorising it. I should say both of these were before bank transfers became the norm.

When you work in any customer facing roles you soon learn that a lot of people are arse holes. I am sure some of them just go to the shops so they can be rude to the people who work there and complain about everything. Most people are nice until they dont get their own way then they will lie and threaten you to get what they want.
