Hey everyone- I’m glad I found this thread of people also deeply moved and distressed by Sara’s case. Rest in peace. What a brave lovely girl. My hurt literally hurts for her 😭 and I think about her Mum, granny and siblings, especially her brother. I hope so much justice is well and truly served. My thoughts are also with the jury. What an utterly horrific case.

yet again a child let down by social services. I can’t help feeling there’s a lack of understanding of how trauma affects victims of violence. The way she shrank into herself, the inconstant explanations about her injuries. Education is needed in schools and social services.

this keeps happening….

That's not good is it? That the jury are still undecided 😞

It's not necessarily a bad sign.

They need time to discuss all the evidence.

I think it's to be expected that they are taking at least a few days to reach verdicts. There are 3 defendants, two of them didn't give evidence in court so weren't cross-examined, and they gave "no comment" interviews to the police after their arrest. And the other one (Sharif) changed his story while being cross-examined and then changed it again. So the evidence available to the jury seems likely to take a while to go through. Plus there are 2 charges to consider for each defendant (murder, and causing or allowing the death of a child). Plus the judge has said they can also consider a charge of manslaughter for each. So if they were to decide against murder for any of the defendants they would still have to consider the other charges. I think the judge has asked them to try to reach unanimous verdicts if possible and would probably expect them to reach verdicts to be given on all 3 defendants at the same time if possible. All of which could take a while.

murasaki · 05/12/2024 15:06

Yes, I think the brother and step mother definitely complicate things. It will take time and rightly so.

Anonymousess · 05/12/2024 15:40

I think on the surface Sharif might be easy to decide on, he did confess multiple times after all so there isn’t much to debate. That will probably be an unanimous verdict.

The debate is likely about the other 2 defendants who had the wherewithal to not provide evidence, so the jury has to infer from somewhat circumstantial evidence what their role in all this was. And then from there what crime may apply, if any. I think this is where they will struggle to get a timely, unanimous verdict.

My guess would be:
Sharif - guilty of murder
Stepmum - guilty of allowing death
Brother - not guilty

Throw away the key.

TriciaTeapot · 05/12/2024 17:46

Thursday, December 5
The jury did not sit today due to a juror being unwell. For the same reason the jury will also not be sitting tomorrow.
Jury deliberations are expected to resume on Monday, December 9 at 10am.

theyve been asked to come up with unanimous verdicts on the 3 defendants with a number of charges… 2 of whom refused to take the stand. Unspeakable 🤬s . Must be a very complex difficult decision making process.

Sunshineandrainbow · 05/12/2024 17:51

Jury has not been there today and one of them is unwell. They will not be there tomorrow either.
Jury will resume deliberations Monday 9th

Edited

My feeling too.

Sorry crossed post about the jury member being unwell.

Dad and step mum guilty of murder .

Uncle guilty of causing or allowing death

Rip beautiful girl

Meemeows · 11/12/2024 13:16

The poor, poor child. I hope these monsters are never released.

This is yet another example of the complete failure of the family court system. Why was a man who was known to be a violent abuser given custody of Sara? Her death was completely avoidable.

Yes. The family court is an abusers charter. Do a course, tick a box, boom then not abusive. Some foolish person who has every incentive to say yes. How many of these men “fail” the course?

You can’t fail except not to turn up. If you are a sadist who enjoys beating up little girls you will definitely turn up.

Someone, somewhere, is making a lot of money from these courses and a lot of children are let down. Some hurt or killed. It should stop.

Curtainqueen · 11/12/2024 13:36

So the uncle who knew for years what was happening but said nothing is guilty of allowing the death but the step mothers sister who also knew for years what was happening but said nothing is not guilty of allowing the death. You couldn't make it up.

Thetrickcyclist · 11/12/2024 13:56

Good. An absolutely awful case and I wouldn't be surprised if there will be more awful stuff still to come. Relatively quick to reach the verdicts considering that there were several dates the jury didn't sit last week/this week due to juror illness.

Lifeomars · 11/12/2024 14:03

I have just seen this news on the Guardian website and there are some more photos of Sara, poor dear girl, she never stood a chance and had a short life of hell. Sentencing is next Tuesday, judge has already acknowledged the horrendous task that faced the jury who had to hear and see the evidence of what those beasts did to that defenceless child

ContactNightmare · 11/12/2024 14:06

If you find this case as disgusting as I do then write to the Justice Secretary at 102 Petty France to ask her to reform the family courts in order to prevent men like this abusing the system to gain access to their children. This man enjoyed beating his child, he enjoyed it, he could have been stopped. It should have been but for a family court system that allowed it.
