Stop me if you have already heard this the last few days, I am trying to make sense of how I feel about Trump and other right leaning wins:

“Woke” issues being pushed to where they have been, has empowered the right by giving them something real and legitimate to campaign against. Something more than their usual transparently false bogeymen.

In general, Authoritarianism, compelled speech, no debate. Specifically men in women’s sports, in women’s changing rooms, unfettered immigration, being asked to ignore the evidence in front of our eyes.

This is happening across the world, Italy, France, Germany, USA, UK.

I remain entirely committed to progressive taxation, a social safety net, collective bargaining, workers rights, public schooling and health services as well as the rights of everyone to live contented, unmolested lives.

I reject identity politics in their entirety. For example, I consider terms like “Woman of colour” to be the epitome of divisive, racist, sexist thought patterns that seeks to infantilise people and move their locus of control from internal to external. Disempowering people and making them victims.

I didn’t leave the left. The left left me.

Reasonable?

How exactly do you think Labour are going to stop the people traffickers and gangs in France? Ask nicely - give them a rainbow sticker if they are jolly nice and stop drowning babies and children in our sea?

They are completely ill equipped to deal with the real world

Atm it's giving millions to other countries and the odd headline to counter the drownings. Which seems to be working for some pp

Hang on did the conservatives stop it did they? I know you don't like labour but your right wing party didn't did they

I used to wonder how Hitler managed to persuade a bunch of Germans to tell on their Jewish and gypsy etc neighbours to actively be on with them going to concentration camps but now I don't need to wonder any more.
It seems to me. There's quite a lot of people that would probably watch Star Wars and route for darth vader while most of us route for the rebels gone over to the dark side have you mmmm
No there is absolutely nothing g and I mean nothing that woukd get me siding with trump or his disgusting maga lot. The same goes for those that like the new conservatives, oh, shall I say. Reform?Because ultimately, they are now going so far to the right? It's unbelievable.
So you cite all this is because of what you believe is happening because of transgender issues, except for isn't it? Funny that many gender critical types seem to be okay now. With donald trump, except for look at the policies he's doing to women, women are literally dying in texas. That state decided to ban abortions under his last term if putting extra republican judges in supreme court.
I am 44 and I don't side with hate and I woukd take a ping hard look at myself if I became so dam socially conservative that I side with those that vote against gay marriage, against realising that equality isn't there yet. Wow

Well y'know, as long as Vader knows what a woman is. 🙄

Tandora · 11/11/2024 19:13

So to sum up- you like social services, but you don’t like foreign people. You also are pretty invested in the patriarchy (which depends on strict binary gender roles), so you really, really dislike the idea that we should recognise, accept and integrate trans people into society.
This upsets you so much, in fact, that you are prepared to vote for a cognitively impaired, fascist, convicted felon, who intends (among any number of awful things) to remove essential , life saving, health services for women.

Are you reasonable? Thats going to be a big fat, no.

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/11/2024 19:14

I tell you what who isnt equpped The conservative party did a great job, didn't they? Not
Tge reform party well they will probably blow up the rnli boats as they have a problem with them saving drowning people

Edited

Labour will probably want to think about the problem they have currently, the drownings weekly.

Maybe you'll notice they are happening after a while.

To the op you wrote I remain entirely committed to progressive taxation, a social safety net, collective bargaining, workers rights, public schooling and health services as well as the rights of everyone to live contented, unmolested lives.
Kemi basenoch aka tories don't want social security not really they have decimated the NHS now it's absolutely broken. And fucking hell the moans about paying more tax so labour can sort this crap out all goes against your grain. So you say you left the left but the other side won't help you on any of that.
Trump won't in the usa he's gonna make it so people will start paying more for health care. Everything you say you are against. So I can rubbish and this is just because you don't agree with a few progressive stuff yet you r happy yo side with those that actually would harm everything else u like

I'm not in the US and I don't see the UK being anti abortion, not that it's been a consideration for a vote. Same sex marriage was also a policy from the conservatives under Cameron. If the leaders at the Remembrance Sunday had only been Labour they would have all been white males. My vote isn't a US one, but a UK one.

Btw it's pro women not 'anti trans'.

And progressive policies to me would be to progress for women and girls not for men.

I think it's a bit naive to say that abortion is not an issue in the UK.

In fact, it would be significantly easier to ban abortion here, because in the UK, abortion is already criminalised in theory. In practice, there is "abortion on demand" when 2 doctors sign to vouch you'd be in more mental or physical distress having the baby than having an abortion. It's a loophole that everyone is using, although finding the 2 doctors willing to sign is not always easy (at least in the state system, they are always available for those who are willing to pay).

All a reactionary government would have to do would be to close the loophole by implementing a higher burden of proof regarding mental/physical distress. There isn't any Roe vs Wade in the UK that explicitly states a right to abortion.

I have its bloody sad the border force shouldn't have been cut that it was there needs to be a system where they can apply for asylum in other countries, and then they wait until they get processed, and they're allowed to come here

OonaStubbs · 11/11/2024 19:20

There aren't enough actual working-class people involved in left wing politics nowadays. The middle-class and upper-class people in the upper echelons seem to purposely exclude them.

Think because previously, many came up from the unions. But as we all know, a lot of companies don't have the unions anymore. You are right. There's only about eight percent.I think or twenty eight percent I can't remember now.It was something very small when I looked at it

That's partly to do with union membership falling so rapidly. However a rabid Tory press owned by a handful of billionaires who are looking after their own interests, hasn't helped.

But according to the ramblings of a few on here it's all the fault of the left blah blah blah

ByMerryKoala · 11/11/2024 19:26

Roe Vs Wade didn't cement abortion access in the USA so a formal codification of rights can hardly be described as a permanent solution.

But there's no appetite here to dick around with abortion rights and it seems to operate pragmatically without any drama or as a politicised hot potato.

Fuck me this is depressing like I said earlier we can now see in actual real time how people will turn on others and prob happy to send them to concentration camps or just showers in nazi Germany. History will look back. I mean some have even suggested to drown the migrant boats not much difference. Star wars need a new film where you can all bravely in a cinema go cheer the dark side

From the poster whose first impulse upon hearing a teacher expressed a political opinion was to suggest reporting him. I'm far more concerned about the authoritarianism of those who endorse the current incarnation of the political left, they seem delighted when someone is jailed or sacked for expressing an opinion.

I agree teachers should remain neutral when discussing politics but once upon a time we used to behave like adults and someone would have told him to stop doing it because it's not appropriate, now it's necessary for every mistake to be punished in some way and for the "guilty" to be shunned, its so just spineless.

No no no sweetie. Stop getting so upset. I was responding to this post:

GenerativeAIBot · Today 17:26
I've aged, but I don;t believe my positions have changed at all. I believe the left as a whole has moved towards identity politics and victim culture.
I object to "women of colour" for so many reasons it hurts but...
It reduces us to gross appearance
it paints coloured people as victims
it presumes only coloured people receive racism
What colour?
What shade?
North African's (say Egyptians?)
South Africans?
Australians?
No. What it really means is "not north european" and it comes with an implied layer of guilt and shame for being so, and it completely omits every other "white" person who also receives a lot of racism, Eastern Europeans for one obvious example.
Identity politics is wrong. Always. We are more than our skin colour.
The left leaning into identity politics and victim culture is why I'll vote for Kemi if I get the chance.

To which I responded:

Many people don't like the term 'coloured people' OP. I'm surprised you don't know this.

Brits are in such a twist now about identify & saying wrong things that I’ve heard people refer to black man on the high street as an “African American ” and “African British” … just don’t know what to say …

What utter bollocks.

No humane person wants that - so dont try hanging that shit on anyone who doesn’t vote for the Democrats/Labour.

Right so I don't see comments of hope we can shoot immigrants on rubber dinghy or happy for trump to actually remove families lock them up . Or the riots that nearly burnt asylum seekers in hotels this year in the uk i imagined all that. You can't speak for all people
