Stop me if you have already heard this the last few days, I am trying to make sense of how I feel about Trump and other right leaning wins:

“Woke” issues being pushed to where they have been, has empowered the right by giving them something real and legitimate to campaign against. Something more than their usual transparently false bogeymen.

In general, Authoritarianism, compelled speech, no debate. Specifically men in women’s sports, in women’s changing rooms, unfettered immigration, being asked to ignore the evidence in front of our eyes.

This is happening across the world, Italy, France, Germany, USA, UK.

I remain entirely committed to progressive taxation, a social safety net, collective bargaining, workers rights, public schooling and health services as well as the rights of everyone to live contented, unmolested lives.

I reject identity politics in their entirety. For example, I consider terms like “Woman of colour” to be the epitome of divisive, racist, sexist thought patterns that seeks to infantilise people and move their locus of control from internal to external. Disempowering people and making them victims.

I didn’t leave the left. The left left me.

Reasonable?

I'm confused what else does person of colour mean?

No offence meant, I can;t personally see how one is fine and the other is not, but I'll happily change it if needed?

Edited

It has a lot of baggage and is now deemed offensive. It's a very dated term.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 11/11/2024 17:42

GenerativeAIBot · 11/11/2024 17:20

Sometimes, yes.
Often, No.

It's that very attitude that got Trump elected.

Yep this! The Democrats having a weak candidate who had very little time to prepare didn't help, but yes, also many people are sick of the 'woke' culture now. Being silenced by the ranty far left accusing people who don't agree with their woke views of being racist, bigoted, transphobic, and 'gammon' and all that shite. It's white noise to me now. Their insults mean nothing. They're a joke. Seriously.

Since when?

What, pray tell, is the 'correct term' now then?

It's hard to keep up, because 'person of colour' was perfectly OK earlier this year. Brenda off Loose Women described herself as such, and she's not the only one. Judi Love did too amongst others... And just this year too.

Can I ask how long it will take you to save the cost of installing your Solar system.
We enquired last year and it had a payback time of 14 years. The sell back to the grid price was low compared to the cost of buying electricity.

Thanks for that post @FOJN it's so easy to get depressed and think things are never going to get better especially with another nearly 4 years of the authoritarian, economy destroying Starmer. Perhaps that is what people need to make them face the reality that we are just a mediocre and getting poorer country on the edge if Europe, and noone is going to follow our lead to impoverishment on net zero or anything else.

I think it could get worse before it gets better but the current situation is unsustainable and on the whole I think it's making lots of people miserable. The self appointed arbiters of morality are revelling in their brief moment of power to bully anyone who disagrees with them but I don't think liberal democracy is a genie that can be put back in the bottle and I believe that, as flawed as we all are, most people are basically decent.

Person of colour is not offensive @GenerativeAIBot

I think it's I the same category as BAME.It assumes that everyone who is not White has the same background and issues That a middle class wealthy person from India can be categorised with a Black British person whos grandparents were from.the Caribbean. We don't even say White people from Poland are the same as White people from the UK when they are from.the same continent!

I'm not talking about person of colour, I'm talking about the term coloured people. It's been offensive for a very long time. Are some of you living under a rock?

EasternStandard · 11/11/2024 17:50

twistyizzy · 11/11/2024 17:39

Yes this 100%
On MN the nastier comment now tend to come mainly from the Left. They are intolerant and sneery, following the example of Reeves, Raynor et al. They think they are morally superior to everyone else and brook no argument. Won't accept any source of information other than The Guardian (which is am irony in itself) and act like they are the moral guardians.
They are a million miles away from the left wingers I was brought up with.

Yep people get fed up and pissed off with the sneery intolerance

Rwanda was illegal and a complete waste of money.

What strategy do you suggest?

Rawanda better strategy than “legal” state supporting drowning. Unless the not-drowning is a hurdle on the path to citizenship.
Insulting to Rawanda to say it’s bad place to settle.

Stopping the many unofficial ways of earning money which can be found in the UK but are much less to be found in France and some other EU member states would be much more effective than sending 1% of unofficial migrants to Rwanda.

Why would this stop people wanting to gain asylum, once granted people can work legally

Germany has higher regulation but the same issue

Rn there's higher deaths in the channel and costs to other countries

What strategy do you suggest?

You're wasting money now just handing millions to other countries to try and 'smash the gangs'. Plus higher deaths weekly and crossings which will cost more.

Rwanda was illegal from the outset as it didn't come up to legal standards. It was a complete waste of money. There was a danger of people being sent to dangerous countries amongst other problems.

People weren't being sent to settle there but to be processed.

What are your other suggestions?

You think that when the man, who is now PM, goes on national TV and says its not right to claim only women have a cervix that many people will think that he has lost his mind or they are being gaslit?

A belief in truth, an understanding of basic biology and material reality are not right wing. If you think they are, you are the problem.

Wrong. I was responding to this thread:

GenerativeAIBot · Today 17:26
I've aged, but I don;t believe my positions have changed at all. I believe the left as a whole has moved towards identity politics and victim culture.
I object to "women of colour" for so many reasons it hurts but...
It reduces us to gross appearance
it paints coloured people as victims
it presumes only coloured people receive racism
What colour?
What shade?
North African's (say Egyptians?)
South Africans?
Australians?
No. What it really means is "not north european" and it comes with an implied layer of guilt and shame for being so, and it completely omits every other "white" person who also receives a lot of racism, Eastern Europeans for one obvious example.
Identity politics is wrong. Always. We are more than our skin colour.
The left leaning into identity politics and victim culture is why I'll vote for Kemi if I get the chance.
Show quote history
Many people don't like the term 'coloured people' OP. I'm surprised you don't know this.
