To dislike the increase in dogs in shops/cafes

I’ve recently noticed a huge increase in non-service dogs in cafes and shops. I was in Joules earlier today and there were 3 in there, two of which were barking and growling at each other. I was in a cafe last week with 2 in there. Surely it can’t be fun for the dog having to sit under a cramped table?

I’m very allergic to dogs and the smell absolutely sets me on edge. I don’t understand why they are allowed in? I’m not about to walk in with a cat or a rabbit so why dogs? It’s also the attitude of most (sweeping generalisation!) dog owners which annoys me, no, I don’t want to talk to your dog or about your dog. I don’t care if you say he’s friendly I don’t want it anywhere near me.

Goes without saying that service dogs are bloody amazing and they should absolutely be welcome everywhere.

Hate it! If my baby screamed I'd take him outside to calm down or if my toddler shouted I'd tell him off /distract him etc. But if a dog yaps on everytime someone opens the bloody door noone bats an eyelid. I'm not a dog person 🤣.

I'm not a dog person either. I have a dog but I don't like dogs in general.

YABVVU OP. All the Dog Mums and Dog Dads can't possibly be expected to leave their fur babies at home.

Most of them have attachment disorder and social anxiety so just must go shopping with their humans 🙄

Fleurdalys · 10/11/2024 20:47

I must fucking stink as I lie spooning my dog in our bed
I give not a fuck 😂

I was in this lovely pub on Friday meeting up with an old friend. We could hardly talk due to a dog nearby barking its head off. Owner told it to stop nut it didn't and they did not take it outside. Totally put me off going again. Dogs should not be in restaurants like this.

Yes this! This is what annoys me more than the slobbering or the smell, it’s the constant barking! Everytime a new dog arrives they all start flipping barking. My local is ‘dog friendly’ so a lot of dogs leave and arrive and all of them bark at each other

PontiacFirebird · 10/11/2024 20:49

Old man pub that doesn’t sell food and older, well behaved dog that will
just sleep under the table = fine
Cafes, gastro pubs, restaurants, shops= not fine. At all.

yanbu

I also have severe allergies to dogs and pub lunch today had to sit outside as being in an enclosed space with dogs for longer than 10min leaves me unable to breathe.

Dramatic much?

VivianLea · 10/11/2024 20:50

I really dislike dogs. My favourite cafe has a regular who always comes in, always sits right next to me and lets his dog go under my table. I studiously ignore it and eventually he half heatedly pulls it back, but jesus fucking Christ. Get your beast away from me!!

There's another awful lady who keeps insisting that my 4 year old DC, who is afraid of dogs, should pet her dog. Fuck off, he doesn't want to! She thinks it's some sort of moral failing that I've allowed him to grow up afraid of dogs, and sees it as her job to rehabilitate him. In reality he loves animals, he's just afraid of dogs because since could walk the fucking things have been jumping up at him in parks.

Nope. Most of them are not house trained because they spend their entire puppyhood inside a crate. So now they can't be left at home because they toilet on the floor and chew the furniture.

Your clothes etc will smell of dog, which is fine if you don't mind it.
Eating establishments, shops and sale products smelling of dog isn't so fine though.

latetonews · 10/11/2024 20:53

Give me a dog filled cafe over one with screeching toddlers any day.

That's why they roll in stuff. Don't bath em in scent, they wont roll in shit 😆

Yeah but then he'll have to go back in the bath so I win!
It's the mildest shampoo I can find because he is such a sensitive soul.
The human and dog relationship has been in place for 30,000 years + so I am always bemused by the attitude on here. Sure if you don't like them that's ok too and generally you can avoid them. Just check out whether a cafe or pub is dog friendly and avoid it.

Service dog users tend to be more considerate as they actually have a need for their dog to be there.

The ones that don't, who expect society to change for them whilst disregarding those with allergies and fears, will naturally not be as considerate as they seem quite gleeful to tell us.

Society has changed and some of us are happy about it. If the cafe or pub owner is happy for dogs to be there, then I’m going to take advantage of that. If you have a problem, then make it clear to the owner that you’d appreciate a dog free area and take it from there.

Do you think wearing perfume or aftershave should be banned from all public places because some people are allergic? There are places where doing so is banned and I think people should adhere to whatever rules are in place, but I’m not going to police my own perfectly normal, socially acceptable behaviour because some people don’t like it or it might be negatively affected. That’s not a lack of consideration, it’s just normal behaviour. Fortunately there are still plenty of places where there are no dogs.

Nodiggetydog · 10/11/2024 20:55

PyreneanAubrie · 10/11/2024 20:44

@Nodiggetydog
How come everywhere you go all the dogs are massive?

Everywhere I go I'm falling over tiny little toy breeds and hardly ever see a dog bigger than a cockerpoo. Pugs and dachshunds everywhere, snapping and yapping 😠

Plenty of yappy little things too, my neighbour has 4 chihuahuas that are always bloody yapping and one is really vicious. Guess I just notice the big ones as so many owners seem to think it's acceptable to let them charge full pelt at a 2 year old!

Temporarynameforthisone · 10/11/2024 20:56

I don’t get it either.

A dog is a dog.

OldTinHat · 10/11/2024 20:59

I've rehomed a dog recently.

I'm in a terraced house and my neighbours have told me this past week that she's started howling when I leave her. She didn't initially.

I drove to the top of my road with dog in the car to collect a prescription yesterday so she wouldn't upset my neighbours.

I've cancelled everything I can, but apparently, I can take dog to the pub quiz and to lunch with friends at another pub next week.

So, I won't apologise for taking my dog with me. It's that or my elderly neighbour one side or my other neighbour who has started chemo has to listen to howls.

And yes, she's being trained, yes, she's very much exercised, yes, she has a behaviourist.

PriOn1 · 10/11/2024 21:00

Talking of stinky things in cafes, loads of places are filled with MAMILS these days, out on their cycle rides. They definitely sometimes smell worse than any dog.

alwaysagoodyear · 10/11/2024 21:02

To the pp who mentioned having a dog phobia 🤣
Those that are allergic to dogs don’t generally have a phobia of the dogs
For me it’s a phobia of needing to spend time in the nearest hospital then at home dealing with the allergic reaction fallout (usually takes me personally around 1-2 weeks)
Not been able to breathe, fully open your eyes or drive to work for a week because a crap owner thinks it’s really ’cute’ to let their dog off lead or extend the lead enough for it to jump up at you and lick you is not cute whatsoever
its just about consideration for others tbh
I wouldn’t let my children jump all over strangers and pee on the floor in a cafe so why do owners think it’s ok for dogs

SpudleyLass · 10/11/2024 21:04

Fleurdalys · 10/11/2024 20:49

......allergies didn't jump out at you there?

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/11/2024 21:04

Not this again 😂. Couldn't think of anything worse than taking my dogs to shops, bars, restaurant or cafes.

Don't mind other dogs as long as they are well behaved.

Deodorant = addressing a hygiene issue.

Quite a bit more necessary than a mangy mutt.

Sadly not true. My dog never gets bathed, except when he rolls in something so revolting it has to be washed off. He still loves rolling in stinky things. Fox shit is his favourite, but rotten fish entrails come a close second.

My dog is neither a mutt, nor does he have mange.

He was from working stock I'll have you know.

Blinky21 · 10/11/2024 21:05

I love dogs but dog friendly hotels are a turn off. I was at a hotel in Manchester recently and there were dogs everywhere. Including a guy who seemed to like sitting in the lobby area directly outside my room while his dog growled and barked at everyone who passed for hours. I get why hotels in the countryside might allow them but not in the middle of a city
