To dislike the increase in dogs in shops/cafes

amymel2016 · 10/11/2024 18:07

I’ve recently noticed a huge increase in non-service dogs in cafes and shops. I was in Joules earlier today and there were 3 in there, two of which were barking and growling at each other. I was in a cafe last week with 2 in there. Surely it can’t be fun for the dog having to sit under a cramped table?

I’m very allergic to dogs and the smell absolutely sets me on edge. I don’t understand why they are allowed in? I’m not about to walk in with a cat or a rabbit so why dogs? It’s also the attitude of most (sweeping generalisation!) dog owners which annoys me, no, I don’t want to talk to your dog or about your dog. I don’t care if you say he’s friendly I don’t want it anywhere near me.

Goes without saying that service dogs are bloody amazing and they should absolutely be welcome everywhere.

There are lots of smells I don't like, most perfumes, most cleaning products, sweaty people, fried food. I have allergies to every airborn allergen you can test for, but I'm thankfully not allergic to dogs. No stinky dog is half as rank as a stinky unwashed person. But yes, it's getting a bit out of hand when dogs are allowed in shops.

My dog smells of dog. Fuck me who'da thunk it.

We’re supposed to be desperately wounded by grown women telling us our houses smell. Don’t be flippant for fucks sake!

They do smell and often get in the way. It’s offensive that non service dogs are now allowed in so many cafes and restaurants especially as their doting owners often don’t keep them under control. I don’t want to sit on a seat where someone has let their dog put it’s dirty feet and arse. A country pub, popular with walkers, dogs in the bar is expected. A city restaurant, not expected or necessary or acceptable.

If the owner of the place says its acceptable, it's acceptable. Not happy? Don't go.

Everyone would have thunk it, hence not wanting to sit near it whilst eating.

ChocolateCakeOverspill · 10/11/2024 19:13

I love it, as far as I’m concerned the more dogs the better.

Gosh sorry.

I will go and sob into my dogs smelly neck now

Who forces you duck?

Plenty of places don't allow them

amoreoamicizia · 10/11/2024 19:14

Edit: sorry, I get it now 😬

BCBird · 10/11/2024 19:17

Café or shop- no thanks. I've stayed in dog friendly cottages thet don't smell- leather sofa and wooden flooring- that maybe why

Didimum · 10/11/2024 19:18

I’m a big animal lover. Always had cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters etc … and I absolutely hate dogs in cafes, restaurants and offices. Animals should not be allowed inside a commercial eating and drinking establishment. I have even seen little dogs sitting on top of tables – gross. Half of them are loud and annoying. In offices they are annoying, distracting and their owners spend half their time fussing over them.

Whatsitreallylike · 10/11/2024 19:20

I’m not keen either OP but it’s the restaurants/cafes fault not the dog/owner. If I was a dog owner then I would absolutely eat in dog friendly places, dogs can’t be left alone for too long (I don’t think). And many people do like to fuss over dogs so its easy to assume all people do (Although I don’t personally). Probably best to find non dog friendly places to eat given your allergy, I’m sure there are still plenty.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 10/11/2024 19:20

I'm not especially keen on dogs, and agree that when I stop for coffee these days, invariably there's someone with a dog next to me. Maybe I've been fortunate but they've never been smelly, wanted to paw or sniff me, and in fact have been really well behaved and sat next to their owner on a blanket or the floor.

It was only reading this thread that it registered really, because it's not caused any issues. Maybe I live in a town of exceptionally well brought up dogs ...

I completely agree. I'm a huge animal lover but it's getting ridiculous. An ex work colleague of mine was even allowed to bring her aggressive dog into the office every week and it cornered members of staff and barked at customers. Management allowed it because we were short staffed and they were worried she'd quit if they banned the dog.

Elphame · 10/11/2024 19:24

My pair get an awful lot of attention (which they absolutely love) but are very quiet and well behaved in pubs and cafes. You wouldn't generally know they are there.

I don't take them shopping; that would be no fun for any of us. I do miss being able to just pop in to the Post Office though. It was very convenient just to drop something off when passing. No longer possible sadly as it's moved into the local Co-op.

usererror99 · 10/11/2024 19:26

I agree OP I was at a pub the other week and a dog actually shit on the floor. I've been in pubs where kids aren't allowed but some great fucking Dane is allowed on the sofas stinking spreading hairs drooling and farting everywhere

Most of these dog owners I've noticed are childfree and their entitlement is breathtaking

Why does anyone need to take their dog to Beamish! But the bloody place is overrun with them

Growing up my dog would be tied to the lamp post outside the shop - my parents wouldn't have dreamed of taking him in there

And don't get me started on the weirdos who have dog prams!

Tutorpuzzle · 10/11/2024 19:27

Cafes, restaurants and shops need to make a profit. Your personal preferences/allergies/hygiene obsessions don’t make a jot of difference to that.

Anyway, you could always go to Wetherspoons, they don’t allow dogs!

Sunholidays · 10/11/2024 19:28

YANBU. Particularly when they are allowed to sit on chairs meant for customers.

MaggieBsBoat · 10/11/2024 19:28

If I were a powerful orange dictator I would do mass deportation on these smelly animals.

But if the dog just slept why not leave it to sleep at home

Well I could have I suppose, had I known she was going to sleep the whole time. My crystal ball wasn’t working though.

Dogs smell. All of them. It’s like when smokers didn’t understand why non smokers didn’t like the smell as ‘doesn’t smell’🙄

My mum's cockerpoo doesn't smell, I live in a dog free house most of the time, but I can't tell the difference when he's here.

PyreneanAubrie · 10/11/2024 19:32

I've had 9 dogs and I've never taken any of them into a cafe or a pub. Two of them have been into Pets at Home as part of their puppy socialisation, but never into any other shop. I love my own dogs but I do not love having other people's dogs in my face all the time.

Dragging dogs around shops is inconsiderate towards people who dislike them, are dog phobic or have allergies. It's also not particularly kind to the dog - they are sensitive to smells and noise and they don't like slippery floors. Although my lot have all been well socialised and friendly towards people, I know they would hate to be taken shopping or to a cafe; it's just not natural for them to do that. I do understand walkers taking their dog in a country pub but that's a very different environment from an urban shopping centre.

In general I dislike the modern way of rearing puppies. Mine are never crated and I do not treat them like babies. I prefer them to have a life that is more suited to their instincts.

whatatodoaboutnothing · 10/11/2024 18:59

Take my fur baby (🤣) everywhere cause why not? She’s small and no bother

In the same way I check where I can take her, you can check where you can go that wouldn’t allow dogs 🤷‍♀️

ps my dog doesn’t smell and sleeps under the table if we stop to eat, so not a trip hazard when she’s out and about

You are joking right? Your dog absolutely does smell and so will you. Smokers and dog owners tend to not notice but trust me, others do.

giggly · 10/11/2024 19:34

I hate it all, I hate the dog pampering owners who can’t move without their fecking dogs, the ones who walk the dogs off lead because you know their friendly dogs, the ones who can’t go out for an afternoon without taking their wee doggy, the ones buying all the stupid doggy doughnuts/ drinks/ whatever crap for their dogs.
the ones that can’t pick up dog shit, the ones who can’t stop their dogs barking at all hours.
oh and let’s not forgot the ones who say but mine is well behaved and will sit under the table.
I don’t care about your dog.
There I feel better now

PotholesAnonymous · 10/11/2024 19:36

It makes me gag when they touch your leg with their face as they walk by and leave slobber over it.

The smell of steaming wet dog when eating a fry up is gag inducing too.

I now avoid eating anywhere that allows dogs.

Glad it made you feel better.

My dog is still going to the pub with me and go off lead where allowed.

He's never once failed to be recalled, so the words 'he's friendly' have never been spoken.
