To dislike the increase in dogs in shops/cafes

I’ve recently noticed a huge increase in non-service dogs in cafes and shops. I was in Joules earlier today and there were 3 in there, two of which were barking and growling at each other. I was in a cafe last week with 2 in there. Surely it can’t be fun for the dog having to sit under a cramped table?

I’m very allergic to dogs and the smell absolutely sets me on edge. I don’t understand why they are allowed in? I’m not about to walk in with a cat or a rabbit so why dogs? It’s also the attitude of most (sweeping generalisation!) dog owners which annoys me, no, I don’t want to talk to your dog or about your dog. I don’t care if you say he’s friendly I don’t want it anywhere near me.

Goes without saying that service dogs are bloody amazing and they should absolutely be welcome everywhere.

I was literally about to post something very similar!

I think it's definitely gotten worse since COVID because so many people decided they wanted a dog in their lives and so many of them just don't seemed trained at all. For some reason it seems to have become acceptable for them to go anywhere and everywhere and it's not right.

At a castle with the kids last weekend and in the cafe there were dogs everywhere! Great slobbering thing sprawled out on across floor behind me and it bloody stunk. Another one at table across from is looking longingly at our food. Two more massive things laid out as we tried to get by for the loos. One starting licking my little boys hand as we passed and the person just said oh he loves kids. I don't care! I don't want your bloody dog, who's probably been licking it's arse and goodness knows what else licking my child. If my child went up and started licking people it wouldn't be acceptable!

Again today we were out and I was stood with my boy in his buggy. Massive great dog charges over an starts licking his face! All I got from the woman is oh he loves kids, just being friendly blah blah. No apology! It drives me mad!!

I think the trouble is dogs are just everywhere now and I think people are scared to say no. Our local farm shop got loads of abuse because he said no dogs inside cafe (could sit outside though).

I grew up with dogs, but on a farm so they were working dogs. In my my dogs belong outside and should be serving a purpose. Dragging them round shops, cafes etc. is inappropriate and not fair on the dogs.

Recently a new cafe in my village opened up, it decided to not allow dogs in and the local facebook page went into meltdown. A lot of people seemed outraged that they wouldn’t allow dogs in. Personally I am glad when a place is pet free.

Where is this heavenly place! If it's not too far from me, I'd take a special trip to support them.

Swivelhead · 10/11/2024 20:33

Taking a dog into Lush is just cruel! That place makes me hurl and I don't have their super duper nostrils.

Is this a new phenomenon I have honestly not seen any cafes or shops here that allow dogs inside

Coconut and dog. 😆

Ah heaven. I believe that is part of Purdy and Figg's autumn range.

I took DS to a university open day last weekend, and it one, but two families had brought their bloody dog with them! Not only that, but they brought it round the halls of residence, into the lecture theatres and everything..!

I think it’s this, they’re popping up everywhere. There was one (super smelly) in the pharmacy the other day! If it were one or two dog friendly places then fine, I can easily avoid them but I don’t want to be constantly tripping over them whilst shopping!

We had a summer holiday in Windermere last year with four dogs that we took everywhere. Whether eating out or going to the pub for a break, the places were packed and I'm sure their businesses were doing a roaring trade allowing dogs, they didn't need the non dog owners.

Its great they are making money
Just Hope there are good places nearby for those who have allergies, phobias etc and can’t be near dogs.
Those people are losing out whilst others find it nice they can take their dogs everywhere.

Nodiggetydog · 10/11/2024 20:35

amymel2016 · 10/11/2024 19:02

Sorry but all dogs smell, all dog owners houses smell, all holiday cottages that allow dogs smell

Couldn't agree more, anyone who says their dog doesn't smell is deluded. I think they become immune over time but I'm 100% with you. Dogs smell end of!

IKEAJesus · 10/11/2024 20:36

The thing I most hate is when owners completely ignore the rules around taking their dogs to places - e,g. if cafes have a “paws on the floor” policy, but the owners allow them on the chairs and tables. Or they take dogs into a signposted dog free area,

For some reason the staff never challenge it, either.

I wouldn’t care about dogs in cafes etc if they were all well-behaved, but an increasing number are not.

And it’s not easy to find dog-free places around here. I have found a couple of restaurants but no coffee shops anywhere in the town centre.

I feel this way about feral children. Just fucking everywhere. 😤 dogs bother me far less

Sprookjesbos · 10/11/2024 20:36

Funnily enough was just thinking this today. I do like dogs but there were 3 in John Lewis today and one was a golden lab brushing against clothes etc. I was really surprised to see them in there!

I was in this lovely pub on Friday meeting up with an old friend. We could hardly talk due to a dog nearby barking its head off. Owner told it to stop nut it didn't and they did not take it outside. Totally put me off going again. Dogs should not be in restaurants like this.

This is a post about entitled dog owners. Start your own about entitled parents if that's what bothers you. Dogs and children are not even remotely comparable though.

My dog had a bath today and now smells of coconut. Will be taking him to a pub in a little bit cos he likes a beer at the weekend.

If your dog had the choice of smelling of dog or smelling of coconut, he would not choose coconut.

Can I ask are you down south? Is it just middle class type stores the reason i am asking is I am honestly not seeing this around here

bloodredfeaturewall · 10/11/2024 20:40

yanbu

I also have severe allergies to dogs and pub lunch today had to sit outside as being in an enclosed space with dogs for longer than 10min leaves me unable to breathe.

No he'll probably roll in something to get back at me.

@PotholesAnonymous

Zefferellis in Ambleside, Grasmere Garden centre.

Mary Mount Hotel does technically take them but puts dog owning guests in a seperate building to the ones who don't. I mention this one because I know the food and service is really good here too.Or there is diamond Lodge in Ambleside which doesn't take dogs at all and is quite central for places like Keswick, Grasmere, Windermere and Kendal.

Edited

Perfect thank you so much.
I love both Ambleside and Grasmere.

I love dogs but 100% you are not being unreasonable. I hate the way in the us people take them on planes. Really unfair on those with allergies

PyreneanAubrie · 10/11/2024 20:44

@Nodiggetydog
How come everywhere you go all the dogs are massive?

Everywhere I go I'm falling over tiny little toy breeds and hardly ever see a dog bigger than a cockerpoo. Pugs and dachshunds everywhere, snapping and yapping 😠

PyreneanAubrie · 10/11/2024 20:46

PixieMcGraw · 10/11/2024 20:40

That's why they roll in stuff. Don't bath em in scent, they wont roll in shit 😆

Sugargliderwombat · 10/11/2024 20:46

Hate it! If my baby screamed I'd take him outside to calm down or if my toddler shouted I'd tell him off /distract him etc. But if a dog yaps on everytime someone opens the bloody door noone bats an eyelid. I'm not a dog person 🤣.

I haven't decided yet so all place names welcome. I shall follow the dog free cafes and b and b's!

Pretty sure the cafes in Booths supermarkets are dog free.

also the cafe in George Fischers in Keswick…..dogs can go in the shop but not in the cafe unless that’s changed recently?
