To dislike the increase in dogs in shops/cafes

I’ve recently noticed a huge increase in non-service dogs in cafes and shops. I was in Joules earlier today and there were 3 in there, two of which were barking and growling at each other. I was in a cafe last week with 2 in there. Surely it can’t be fun for the dog having to sit under a cramped table?

I’m very allergic to dogs and the smell absolutely sets me on edge. I don’t understand why they are allowed in? I’m not about to walk in with a cat or a rabbit so why dogs? It’s also the attitude of most (sweeping generalisation!) dog owners which annoys me, no, I don’t want to talk to your dog or about your dog. I don’t care if you say he’s friendly I don’t want it anywhere near me.

Goes without saying that service dogs are bloody amazing and they should absolutely be welcome everywhere.

Why is it such an issue for someone to have their dog sitting quietly under a table but someone's horrible screaming kid can ruin it for everyone and nobody gets to say "shut that fucking kid up"?

Because some people hate dogs to the point they can't stand being in the same room as one, even if it is well behaved.

Not all dogs sit quietly. There are dogs that wander, search for food, jump up. I personally love dogs but muddy paws or pulled tights due to a jumping dog is not acceptable.

Some owners are pathetic 'he's just being friendly' as he jumps on you, or if he ferrets around under your table, and they smile uselessly at you. Some dogs smell worse than others and owners seem to be nose blind. Not all owners are great. The ones that leave the full poo bags random places might be the same ones that have no control over their dog, who knows.

Well 81% of the people who voted would like to see less dogs in cafes etc.

I have dogs but I'm finding badly behaved dogs annoying so would like to see less in cafes or shops.

Yanbu I don't want dogs jumping up me and slobbering everywhere. No I don't think your dog is cute and I don't want to fuss over it. Taking a dog out into shops and cafes is 100% for the owners benefit and not for the dog. Dogs want to play, and run in open fields and beaches not dragged around crowded shops or squahed under tables at cafes.

I take my dog in cafes, pubs etc all the time. She is small and has no interest in anybody else so would never jump up or even attempt to approach a person she doesn’t know and I absolutely do not want anyone trying to fuss her, I have zero interest. I’m not sure if you’re aware but most people don’t drive to a pub with their dog and then drive back home 😂 so when you say it’s for the owners benefit and not the dog, going into a pub, cafe or shop is usually as part of a day out when the dog has been on a big walk and been out with their family all day. Plus my dog sits on a chair not under the table (sure you’ll love that 😉) and she loves it

Well said!
Also, the dogs that get taken in cafes and pubs tend to be the well socialised and well
behaved ones because they have been used to these environments since they were puppies. Feral children however, not the case!

My parents take their dog with them into cafes/pubs whilst on holiday or to their local pubs. He is a rescue that was left for extremely long periods in a crate on his own and hates being left at home (even if they go shopping for a hour he's miserable and gets upset when they go to leave.) he's very friendly though and never growls/goes to bite.
I don't mind in those cases as it's being kind to the animal, but it is on the rise and I'd rather not have a dog in a cafe as you just don't know if they are friendly!

Oh, I didn’t know Costa allowed dogs! Excellent, thanks for that, I love their espressos and now I can take my fur baby in too😊.

I’m not aware of any Costa that allows dogs 🤷. And I’ve travelled all over UK

They all do now, it's new as of a few weeks ago. I read it online and saw a poster in my local Costa last week.

Utterly disgusting. I was in a high end bakery today with patisserie just on a counter, and a big dog (visla) was sniffing the cakes and she was letting him. Oh how utterly vile! These people are totally clueless. There’s no way I was going to buy a cake after that!

Clutches pearls

Tapthisscreen · 14/11/2024 17:39

People could be coughing all over the patisserie. Heaven’s above.

Swivelhead · 15/11/2024 06:00

If a dog's breath can get on it, then so can airborne snot molecules, flying insects, cleaning sprays, unwashed fingers...

I'm not Howard Hughes but having uncovered baked goods on a counter is fucking disgusting, "high end" bakery or not.

Coolasfeck · 15/11/2024 07:27

I used to not mind the odd dog in cafes and shops, but there are just far too many dogs around now in general. When you’re trying to walk along the street and there are a couple of dog owners chatting so their dogs can sniff each other and the dogs are crisscrossed all over the pavement. Arghh! They’ve became a nuisance.

I’ve had dogs and never felt the need to take them shopping with me or to have a coffee. It’s too much now.

I do suspect that a lot of these people who felt FOMO and rushed to buy dogs during Covid secretly regret it now though.

It is. I don't know where the trend for it came from, it seemed to erupt around about the time Gail's opened?

DemonicCaveMaggot · 15/11/2024 09:17

I was in a local pub the other day where the landlady makes and sells cakes and tray bakes. She keeps them on the counter under a hygenic glass dome so I really don't see why a high end bakery can't do the same. I wouldn't want to eat a cake after all the regulars who sit at the bar have been breathing over it for several hours let alone a dog.

There is nothing pearl clutchy about appreciating basic hygiene and food safety.
