To dislike the increase in dogs in shops/cafes

I’ve recently noticed a huge increase in non-service dogs in cafes and shops. I was in Joules earlier today and there were 3 in there, two of which were barking and growling at each other. I was in a cafe last week with 2 in there. Surely it can’t be fun for the dog having to sit under a cramped table?

I’m very allergic to dogs and the smell absolutely sets me on edge. I don’t understand why they are allowed in? I’m not about to walk in with a cat or a rabbit so why dogs? It’s also the attitude of most (sweeping generalisation!) dog owners which annoys me, no, I don’t want to talk to your dog or about your dog. I don’t care if you say he’s friendly I don’t want it anywhere near me.

Goes without saying that service dogs are bloody amazing and they should absolutely be welcome everywhere.

My dog had a bath today and now smells of coconut. Will be taking him to a pub in a little bit cos he likes a beer at the weekend.

But, if what you say is true and there are dogs in every place you go, why do you keep assuming otherwise?

Are we missing something here? 😆

Naive hopeful optimism, I suppose.

@PotholesAnonymous

Place names would help. I'm not exaggerating when I say it is a very big place and I don't want to suggest places that will be miles out of your way.

I haven't decided yet so all place names welcome. I shall follow the dog free cafes and b and b's!

Most places don't allow dogs inside.

So not sure what some posters are getting their tits in a tangle about

In some areas lots of places do allow dogs inside though.
Only service dogs need to be indoors, and in my experience service dog users are also some of the most considerate pet owners.

This might be a bit out there but saying “Hello, do you allow dogs in here?” before ordering might work?

Why should everyone have to ask. Go in shop, budge past queue, interrupt staff making coffee just to ask a question when shops, cafes, restaurants etc could simply put a sign up saying dogs welcome or guide dogs only.

Remember people with dogs would have to go through all that palaver with the dog in tow to ask the question too,

A sign outside is much better and more user friendly.

I’m fine with dogs that are the size of a money spider or even those as large as my hand.

Of course, if you prefer to live your life in fear. <shrug>

I have a picture of me holding a tarantula on my wall. Even the word tarantula used to give me the heebies jeebies. Now I can garden, go up in the loft, clear cobwebs myself without having to pay someone, stand beside massive Halloween spider decs without feeling sick...

I'd hate to be that scared little person again

I don't understand why the dogs can't just be left at home for a few hours like they used to. It wasn't a problem a few years ago, so why has it become a problem now?

Saw a dog on a lead in a shop yesterday that was licking food items on the bottom shelves. Unhygienic.

“It wasn't a problem a few years ago, so why has it become a problem now?”

Societal changes, Covid pet buying, expectations on dog owners.

When I was a child, the majority of women didn’t work, or worked shorter hours. Now many family dogs are alone all day through the week. People don’t want to leave them alone on evenings and weekends as well.

Lots of people bought pets during lockdown. Some of those pets are not used to being left alone and don’t cope well when they are.

It’s considered unacceptable now for dogs to be left alone for long periods. People report dog owners for doing that and also for leaving dogs in cars, even when it’s safe to do so.

And I guess it’s simply being normalised by people who like it or (like me) find it convenient and that’s another thing that’s changed. Most places used to refuse dogs entry. Now they don’t. It’s the owner’s choice who they want to welcome and some like dogs. Simple as that.

alwaysagoodyear · 10/11/2024 20:26

Just to add (and apols for typos on previous post I was rushing)
ironically we also have hundreds of acres and of green fields, pastures and riverside/woodland walks all around the town
we often walk at various days/times and there’s barely anyone walking their dogs in these places!
the dogs clearly much prefer small cafes, interior and clothes shopping and looking for makeup than running free like you would think dogs would enjoy 😉

beardediris · 10/11/2024 20:27

I have two dogs I don’t take mine to shops because I don’t believe they have any desire to go. I rarely take them to cafes/pubs for the same reason.
There seems to be a general consensus now a days that it’s highly undesirable boarding on cruelty to leave your dog alone. Inn nearly 60 and have been around dogs all my life when I was a kid dogs were left and no one seemed to think it was an issue and no one’s dogs suffered from seperation anxiety or any of the other neuroses that dogs seems to seem to suffer from now. It would have been considered highly unhygienic to take dogs into to shops or cafes/pubs. Finally the hideous term fur babies didn’t exist dogs were dogs they were treated like dogs not equal to everyone else in the family and therefore behaved like dogs.

What awful language. Having a phobia doesn't make someone a 'scared little person'. 🤢

Not sure I understand what you think you're saying here.

Service dog users tend to be more considerate as they actually have a need for their dog to be there.

The ones that don't, who expect society to change for them whilst disregarding those with allergies and fears, will naturally not be as considerate as they seem quite gleeful to tell us.

Swivelhead · 10/11/2024 20:28

I was a scared little person. I looked at ceilings when I went into rooms. You have no idea what a phobia entails, clearly

Oh gosh, that’s amazing! Did you get a trophy to go with the photo?

Its not about fear (for me anyway), more disgust and the inability to breath properly around dogs on account of their dander setting off my asthma.

@PotholesAnonymous

Zefferellis in Ambleside, Grasmere Garden centre.

Mary Mount Hotel does technically take them but puts dog owning guests in a seperate building to the ones who don't. I mention this one because I know the food and service is really good here too.Or there is diamond Lodge in Ambleside which doesn't take dogs at all and is quite central for places like Keswick, Grasmere, Windermere and Kendal.

tillytoodles1 · 10/11/2024 20:30

We had a summer holiday in Windermere last year with four dogs that we took everywhere. Whether eating out or going to the pub for a break, the places were packed and I'm sure their businesses were doing a roaring trade allowing dogs, they didn't need the non dog owners.

YouCantFightInHereThisIsTheWarRoom · 10/11/2024 20:30

I have seen dogs in Lush several times. Takes an absolute areshole owner to expose their dogs to the smells in there (I Love Lush, but it will be hell for dogs.). I also HATE them being in human spaces, and avoid cafes where they state they are dog friendly, and I boycott shops where they are encouraged. It is not fair on those of us who don't want dog slobber on our purchases.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 10/11/2024 20:31

I took DS to a university open day last weekend, and it one, but two families had brought their bloody dog with them! Not only that, but they brought it round the halls of residence, into the lecture theatres and everything..!

SpudleyLass · 10/11/2024 20:31

I'm sure I'm coming off as a dog hater.

I'm really not - I grew up with King Charles Cavalier Spaniels, was very involved in their care etc.

I would never have dreamed of imposing our dogs in places where people could rightfully expect no dogs except guide dogs to be. For reference, I'm 32 so this whole "oh we mustn't leave Fido alone for 2 hours" really is a recent phenomenon.

The Lake District was always popular, even before the entitled dog owner invasion. 🫣

Recently a new cafe in my village opened up, it decided to not allow dogs in and the local facebook page went into meltdown. A lot of people seemed outraged that they wouldn’t allow dogs in. Personally I am glad when a place is pet free.
