To dislike the increase in dogs in shops/cafes

amymel2016 · 10/11/2024 18:07

I’ve recently noticed a huge increase in non-service dogs in cafes and shops. I was in Joules earlier today and there were 3 in there, two of which were barking and growling at each other. I was in a cafe last week with 2 in there. Surely it can’t be fun for the dog having to sit under a cramped table?

I’m very allergic to dogs and the smell absolutely sets me on edge. I don’t understand why they are allowed in? I’m not about to walk in with a cat or a rabbit so why dogs? It’s also the attitude of most (sweeping generalisation!) dog owners which annoys me, no, I don’t want to talk to your dog or about your dog. I don’t care if you say he’s friendly I don’t want it anywhere near me.

Goes without saying that service dogs are bloody amazing and they should absolutely be welcome everywhere.

@mitogoshigg Costa changed its policy on dogs last month. They are now allowed.

Excellent, obviously listening to public demand

FairCrow · 12/11/2024 20:34

I have 13 inch scar from a dog attack as a child, and am autistic like my son. We both are very anxious of dogs and don't like the smells.
I don't want anyone to hurt animals but it would be nice if (pet) dogs were not around in shops and so on because its hard on some disabled people.

ChitterChatter1987 · 12/11/2024 20:35

I think it depends on the dog....one lying asleep under the table in a pub wouldn't do much harm, but the trouble is you always get people who abuse the privelidge and let them run wild and disrupt others, spread germs by letting them sit up on chairs at the tables etc.

Or bowing to the inevitable? I don't go in Costa anyway. But having dogs in there would not encourage me to change that.

Costa was a filthy shit hole before they allowed dogs, during and after - but now you can't blame the dogs.

I have always like dogs, but it is the irrational, irresponsible, entitled dog owners that put me off getting one.
Like it or not, it’s unhygienic for dogs to be in cafes, food shops and restaurants. That was always an accepted fact. Many cafe owners may now be giving in to the fact that dog ownership is booming (and a lot of the new dog owners have less than a clue what is actually best for dogs) but that doesn’t change the facts.
Any dog owners got anything to say about the post from a person with an assistance dog who says it detrimental to her working dog to have dogs in places they shouldn’t be? Anyone would think the new breed (geddit?) of dog owners were self absorbed and selfish…

I have a small, friendly dog who wants to be friends with everyone.....the only shop she's ever been in has been pets at home and we only ever stop at a cafe with her if there is somewhere to sit outside. I find it really unhygienic to have people's dogs inside places that sells food, I went into a co-op a while ago where someone had their dog in there sniffing all the shelves and shoving it's face into everything while the owner browsed with a gormless grin on her face.

wow so (non-service) dogs are going in supermarkets now?! I usually do all my food shopping online so maybe that’s why I’ve yet to witness this.I do occasionally pop into the local Tesco but haven’t seen that.

I don’t think they are allowed in supermarkets.

Never seen a non service dog in supermarkets

Believe it or not people who like dogs are not all the same. Restaurant and cafe owners may actually be dog owners who like dogs and want to provide a space for dogs and their owners to hang out, if you don't like it you can chose to go elsewhere - they arent missing the likes of you - if they were, they'd ban the dogs.

Lucky you. As I reached over to get a yogurt in Tesco I was met, face to face, with a dog on a sling on a woman’s chest a few months ago.

Did you need therapy - that sounds traumatic.

Of course I didn’t. Just an example that dogs are in supermarkets. Sorry did my story trigger you? 🙄 I see it’s that time of night again on mn.

Tescos says online only assistant dogs are allowed.
Owner obviously sneaked that one in

@ButterMints

I live in Lake District too. I can think of plenty of places that don't take dogs.

Can you list them please? We are visiting soon and this would be really helpful.

Mnetcurious · 12/11/2024 23:35

mitogoshigg · 12/11/2024 19:25

Wetherspoons don't allow dogs, that's a huge number of pubs that are dog free. Costa don't allow dogs either.

I found plenty didn't allow dogs when dog was alive!

Our Costa does allow dogs. Who wants to eat/drink in a crappy Wetherspoons just because it’s the only place that’s dog-free?!

loubielou31 · 12/11/2024 23:38

Prescottdanni123 · 10/11/2024 20:30

@PotholesAnonymous

Zefferellis in Ambleside, Grasmere Garden centre.

Mary Mount Hotel does technically take them but puts dog owning guests in a seperate building to the ones who don't. I mention this one because I know the food and service is really good here too.Or there is diamond Lodge in Ambleside which doesn't take dogs at all and is quite central for places like Keswick, Grasmere, Windermere and Kendal.

Edited

I found this post after I had asked. Thanks

I welcome well behaved dogs and well behaved dog owners. Not otherwise.

Small businesses are struggling enough as people restrict spending given recent inflation, so to refuse anyone with a dog could mean the difference between being in business and not.

Actually I think now that everywhere accepts dogs, your business would have more of a USP if you didn’t. If we had a decent local cafe that was NOT dog friendly, I’d choose it every time. There are clearly loads of us on this thread who put up with dogs when there’s no real choice but would prefer to go somewhere dog-free!

pizzaHeart · 12/11/2024 23:51

I agree with you OP. It’s absolute madness that non working dogs are allowed in shops and cafes.
I personally avoid such places, it’s very unhygienic.

I really don’t understand why it is unhygienic. The dogs are not anywhere near the food or drink.

DiscoBeat · 13/11/2024 00:11

I have a dog and love to get the opportunity for dog cuddles out and about but I don't think they should be allowed everywhere. Locally here it's only garden centres and pet shops that allow them, or pubs (our local pub allows them everywhere and the local restaurant allows them on the flagstone floor area of the bar so the restaurant is out of bounds to dogs). I think that's fair so that dog lovers and non are catered for.

It makes me gag when they touch your leg with their face as they walk by and leave slobber over it.

The smell of steaming wet dog when eating a fry up is gag inducing too.

I now avoid eating anywhere that allows dogs.

I find a fry up does that for me, not the dog! (But I respect your issues).
