To dislike the increase in dogs in shops/cafes

I’ve recently noticed a huge increase in non-service dogs in cafes and shops. I was in Joules earlier today and there were 3 in there, two of which were barking and growling at each other. I was in a cafe last week with 2 in there. Surely it can’t be fun for the dog having to sit under a cramped table?

I’m very allergic to dogs and the smell absolutely sets me on edge. I don’t understand why they are allowed in? I’m not about to walk in with a cat or a rabbit so why dogs? It’s also the attitude of most (sweeping generalisation!) dog owners which annoys me, no, I don’t want to talk to your dog or about your dog. I don’t care if you say he’s friendly I don’t want it anywhere near me.

Goes without saying that service dogs are bloody amazing and they should absolutely be welcome everywhere.

I’d far rather a house that stank of dogs than being with a miserable person who likes to fling insults about. Fair enough not to like dogs but that doesn’t mean you get to eradicate them from public places especially serving dogs and mental health dogs

It's not an insult, just stating a fact. Where did I say I want them eradicated from public spaces? That's just you jumping to conclusions. Service dogs are necessary, "mental health" dogs are not.

My standards are fine thanks. I mop and hoover everyday. Wash throws, don't have any carpets.

If you can smell my dog in my house, then, shock horror, that's because I have a dog in my house. You sound pathetic 🙄

Edited

I'm stating that your house probably smells of dog. Some people's standards are such that they are not prepared to put up with a smelly house. If your standards aren't that high, that's your choice. You don't need to explain yourself to me. I understand it upsets you but it doesn't make me sound pathetic- that's just you lashing out.

No. My dog smells of dog. There is nothing in my house that would retain the smell of dog.

I'm not remotely upset lovely. I aren't the one starting threads about dogs and then moaning other people have dogs that smell.

All houses smell of something, though.

Dogs don’t smell objectively awful (unless they’ve been rolling in something). They just smell of dog, which some people like and others don’t.

So your house is entirely stainless steel? Stainless steel sofa, stainless steel flooring.

So modern!

No. But it's tiled and lvt floors and my sofa is leather, which he doesnt get on or one which is 3 weeks old in a room he rarely ventures. He doesn't get on the beds and I have no carpet.

He doesn't smell bad enough to penetrate the floors or walls. Ok?

When we had carpet my living room did smell doggy. We now have no carpet.

vodkaredbullgirl · 11/11/2024 19:26

I don't care if my house smells of dog to an outsider, not that it does always on top of the cleaning.

Ytcsghisn · 11/11/2024 19:41

Dogs smell and should not be in food establishments.

Not sure why people insist on bringing them everywhere.

Ytcsghisn · 11/11/2024 19:42

Dog owners’ clothes smell of dog and their houses definitely do. And if they’re under any illusion that it’s a nice smell, they’re deluded.

I smell like lavender bold capsules.

I do occasionally rub my coat all over my dog instead to mask the floral smell

Tapthisscreen · 11/11/2024 19:51

We’re laughing because that’s your trump card, not because you’ve offended us. The same attempt at an insult primary school brats use. See you all in Costa.

Swivelhead · 11/11/2024 20:07

I think I am going to borrow the massive akita down the road to go to Costa.

Funny how our doggies are living rent-free in all these little heads.

Toastthemosttoo · 11/11/2024 20:16

I wish my house smelled of dog, I miss my dog and I miss his smell,😔

Swivelhead · 11/11/2024 20:21

Sorry, Toast; it's so horribly quiet when they leave us. "Brother and sister, I bid you beware / Of giving your heart to a dog to tear."

amymel2016 · 10/11/2024 20:29

Oh gosh, that’s amazing! Did you get a trophy to go with the photo?

Its not about fear (for me anyway), more disgust and the inability to breath properly around dogs on account of their dander setting off my asthma.

Edited

’Did you get a trophy’ 😂😂😂

OP, I 100% agree with you, but I just had to comment about how much that made me laugh, thank you 😂

OP YANBU!

YeOldeGreyhound · 11/11/2024 21:30

Oh, this is an original thread.
If an establishment allows dogs, then dog owners are doing nothing wrong by taking them in there. I would add that this would apply to well behaved dogs. Believe it or not, dog owners can dislike how other owners let their dog behave.
Most people know their dog though, and wont drag them to places that they will play up in. When my dog was a puppy, she was a bit of a cow and I would not go inside places with her as she would not settle. Now, she is perfect, and lays on her blanket and does not bother anyone.

The comments on here about dog owner's houses smelling though. It honestly sounds like stuff kids say to each other at school. If my house smells of dog, then I don't care. None of the posters on this thread are going in my house anyway. This thread is almost as batshit about the one demanding that people stop referring to themselves as pet parents in their own home.

I think it's a great way to weed out people - who wants friends that are going to judge their house anyway.

How dare people have something that involves getting healthy exercise everyday, that is good for their mental health and fantastic for the immune system of children.

YANBU! I’m a dog owner and I agree. Time and place.

I’ve seen an increase of toddlers and kids in pubs after 9pm. No need. I didn’t do it with mine. They were in bed.

While you were in the pub?

Is that even legal? Kids in pubs after 9pm.

Jaehee · 11/11/2024 22:27

I used to get smuggled into pubs with 'no children' signs. When I was inevitably spotted, my parents said I would be quiet and no bother Confused

Yes if the licence allows it, but they must be accompanied if under 16, and that's if the place serves alcohol only.

I think from memory, children, accompanied or not are not allowed between midnight & 5 am as a blanket law, if it's a place that serves alcohol only.

9pm is a popular cut off as that's when a lot of places stop serving food, so they shift to drinks, namely alcohol as what they sell, and you have to protect children from the effects of alcohol as part of your licence.

Cindersroo · 12/11/2024 01:38

I personally don’t like it BUT I get there are some who want to take their dogs to cafe etc so I think we need clearly identifiable dog friendly and non dog friendly cafes/restaurants to make it fair for everyone.

It’s really annoying if you, for any reason, don’t want to be around dog in a cafe or restaurant then you go in and order, thinking it’s a pet free zone only to see a dog come in after and be allowed to stay.

It would be excellent if all dog friendly places had some kind of sticker like a paw they could place on their window/door/website and the ones that don’t have that are the ones where dogs aren’t allowed!

I was going out for lunch earlier this year in a specific location in London and I had to call about 12 places in the area before I found one that was NOT dog friendly. It would’ve been so much easier if they all just displayed this on their website!

When I book hotels it’s a lot easier for me to see if dogs are allowed or not and I typically avoid dog friendly hotels. Although I once stayed at a B&B that stipulated dogs weren’t allowed only to have the owners 3 yappy dogs run at me when I entered. It was wrong of them not to state they have their own dogs on the premises.
