To dislike the increase in dogs in shops/cafes

I’ve recently noticed a huge increase in non-service dogs in cafes and shops. I was in Joules earlier today and there were 3 in there, two of which were barking and growling at each other. I was in a cafe last week with 2 in there. Surely it can’t be fun for the dog having to sit under a cramped table?

I’m very allergic to dogs and the smell absolutely sets me on edge. I don’t understand why they are allowed in? I’m not about to walk in with a cat or a rabbit so why dogs? It’s also the attitude of most (sweeping generalisation!) dog owners which annoys me, no, I don’t want to talk to your dog or about your dog. I don’t care if you say he’s friendly I don’t want it anywhere near me.

Goes without saying that service dogs are bloody amazing and they should absolutely be welcome everywhere.

While you were in the pub?

What’s wrong with that? Are mothers not allowed to go out??

Not if they left their kids in bed 😂

ANEC · 12/11/2024 14:45

Yep, I’m with you OP. Shops are no place for dogs. I have dog and manage to the shops without him. If I’m out all day I book him into doggy day care or ask a neighbour or friend if they can help.

I’m actively avoiding shops that allow dogs.

Could crate them. A reverse on the old classic “treating your dogs like children”.

Make it into a little den for them. Some where warm with snacks and water. Grand idea.

Lots of dogs in my local garden centre today - most were being no problem. But one obviously didn’t like other dogs and was barking incessantly every time it saw one. Why would you take a dog if it’s going to behave like that?

A different owner also got pissed off with me when I asked politely if they could move their dog so I could get to something on a lower shelf right by the dog’s backside - I didn’t really want to put my face near that. I had been waiting for a couple of minutes for them to move on, but they were obliviously chatting.

I'm sure they would be heartbroken lol

I would assume that when most mothers are in the pub and the children are in bed their father is looking after them? Or..grandparents/ babysitter…. or do women have to stay home every night until all children are 18?
As for crating, I wouldn’t do it to a dog, let alone a child!

Oh bloody hell it was a pissing joke. Lighten up. God almighty this place. Do you have to be offended by every bloody comment.

I love seeing dogs out and about. Live and let live. YABU. 🐶

I'd rather share a cafe with a well-behaved dog lying quietly under the table than an annoying shrieking toddler running around!

It's not the same at all - I hate this view. Parents cannot leave their toddlers at home alone

Dog owners shouldn’t leave their dogs at home alone all day.
We like to have our furry friends out with us and why not if the premise welcomes dogs?

Tapthisscreen · 12/11/2024 18:31

Then parents should stay out of cafes and restaurants until their children can behave. It’s like recall, unless you’re 100% sure of excellent behaviour, stay away. Or perhaps try the crate.

LlynTegid · 12/11/2024 18:45

I welcome well behaved dogs and well behaved dog owners. Not otherwise.

Small businesses are struggling enough as people restrict spending given recent inflation, so to refuse anyone with a dog could mean the difference between being in business and not.

Do dog owners spend more money then? Are they and their pooches better customers? Genuine question.

81% of people are agreeing with the OP that they dislike this. I, and most of my family always try to choose a dogless cafe over a doggy one. Does our money and custom not matter?

DemonicCaveMaggot · 12/11/2024 18:51

Our local pub banned dogs for a while as some evenings they had more dogs in than paying customers.

I do get the impression some people delight in fixating on their hatred eg. of dogs or cats because spouting racist abuse or targeting disabled people is no longer socially acceptable.

They just seem to take such vicious pleasure in the actual hating.

I am allergic to dogs dander - I can't breathe and it sets my asthma off. So not racist thanks

Could you share the address so 81% of this thread can go for a wine?

But I assume they had to open up again for the dog owners as it was empty? That's what I took from the 'for a while'

mitogoshigg · 12/11/2024 19:25

Wetherspoons don't allow dogs, that's a huge number of pubs that are dog free. Costa don't allow dogs either.

I found plenty didn't allow dogs when dog was alive!

My Costa in town does

But they can control them properly so they are not running around in a cafe. Cafes are not playgrounds, and it is dangerous to allow children to run about when people are carry food and drinks.

SantasRubiksCube · 12/11/2024 20:07

I have a small, friendly dog who wants to be friends with everyone.....the only shop she's ever been in has been pets at home and we only ever stop at a cafe with her if there is somewhere to sit outside. I find it really unhygienic to have people's dogs inside places that sells food, I went into a co-op a while ago where someone had their dog in there sniffing all the shelves and shoving it's face into everything while the owner browsed with a gormless grin on her face.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/11/2024 20:14

@mitogoshigg Costa changed its policy on dogs last month. They are now allowed.
