To think Justin Welby Archbishop of Canterbury must resign/be charged TW CSA.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 10/11/2024 13:02

Justin Welby knew in 2013 about a prolific child abuser.

He did nothing

"I personally failed to ensure that after disclosure in 2013 the awful tragedy was energetically investigated."

He is not resigning, he should be bloody charged with aiding and abetting. The abuser was allowed to move to Africa and continue to abuse.

This is the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby considered resigning over 'appalling' barrister abuse scandal

John Smyth QC's abuse was covered up within the Church of England for years, an independent review found.

So no-one else has an issue with this?

I agree with you completely - he should be immediately removed. Enough of allowing senior figures who cover-up to quietly resign. He should be very loudly and publicly sacked- he won't be though.

Supersoakers · 10/11/2024 22:10

Awful tragedy? Makes it sound like an accident.

username7891 · 10/11/2024 22:12

There have been loads of threads on this OP. IMO you should be prosecuted if you don't inform on a sexual predator.

Ellmau · 10/11/2024 22:26

TBF Welby didn't know until 2013, 30 years after JS was allowed to move to South Africa.

Obviously it should have been prosecuted at the time rather than being hushed up, but I don't personally think the Archbishop is the one at fault.

John Smyth QC looks on during a court hearing. He's sat on a chair and wearing a stripy shirt.

John Smyth QC's abuse of more than 100 children and young men was covered up for years, a report concludes.

So he claims.

CagneyNYPD1 · 10/11/2024 22:32

He knew in 2013 and did nothing.

To put this into context, by 2013 we knew about Jimmy Seville's abuse history. Historic sexual abuse by prominent men was being discussed quite openly. Operation Yewtree had been launched and had reported on Saville publicly in Jan 2013.

In the midst of this, Welby was informed about one of his own abusing boys and young men. Welby chose to ignore it

Welby absolutely should be sacked.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/11/2024 22:34

In all honesty I'd have epected nothing else, but obviously you're right and he should be thoroughly investigated and charged if appropriate

Good luck expecting it to happen though; the church will look after each other as ever

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 10/11/2024 22:36

Absolutely agree OP.

Kibble29 · 10/11/2024 22:40

Sack him, revoke whatever pension (or the equivalent that these people get) and prosecute.

They’ve gotten away with the hushed secrets and movement of men to different areas in order to duck away from detection.

Let this scumbag rot in a cell. Show them that power doesn’t equal immunity.

This report was commissioned by the Church of England. They commissioned a report into themselves and published it, even though it’s very critical.

This is not them looking after each other - quite the opposite.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/11/2024 22:48

What's his personal connection with Smythe? The RC church has had its issues but at least their safeguarding is more robust than the C of E. who still seem to be dropping the ball.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/11/2024 22:49

They had no choice once the whistle was blown, @Greenbike, and in the worldview of such people a bit of self-flagellation and a few "didn't knows" can usually be relied on to make it all go away

If they were quite as appalled as they pretend then Welby would be gone, but he isn't so we can only draw the obvious conclusion

Whilst there might be more details, he knew in 2013. There was no inquiry until 2017 when Hampshire Police investigated.

He did nothing

I was horrified

I was just letting you know as you said So no-one else has an issue with this. People do have an issue with it but the consensus seems to be that they're no longer surprised at such revelations.

Screamingabdabz · 10/11/2024 22:56

ALL the people who knew and did nothing should lose their employment in the Church of England. Every single last one. Jesus turned tables because they defiled God’s house. The CofE has a moral duty to cast out abuse and those who turn a blind eye to it.

distinctpossibility · 10/11/2024 22:59

I'm so upset about this. Fancy knowing and doing nothing. Who tf are these "advisors" telling JW not to resign?!

Worked in his 'Bash Camps' in the late 70s-early 80s. He was warned against smythe in 1981. But after this he continued to exchange Christmas cards and support smythes 'missions' in Zimbabwe.

He should certainly lose his place in the House of Lords. He and his corrupt organisation have no business having a privileged position to speak on matters of ethics. Maybe we should get the churches out of education too. What on earth is the 'ethos' they're so fond of? - Church before children, it would seem. What's that line - By your works ye shall know them.

The King! Since when did he stand up against sex offenders? Google Bishop Peter Ball

He thought about resigning.... Sigh!
He should be fired because he knows about this since 2013 and did eff all!
