People putting up Xmas trees and decs now and moan about they are sick of dusting

I have a friend who has posted on FB with her tree and other decs up. She puts up tree etc about this time of year. Yet hear her moaning about how dusting the lounge takes longer due to tree etc.

Then have a colleague who probably puts up her tree about 10 later and her DH moans he he is sick of the sight of the tree a week before Christmas.

Both put tree away on Boxing Day! Noticed this a lot with the Xmas tree twirlies.

If you get fed up of the extra dusting, sight of it before Xmas, don’t put up your Decs up early then!

I don’t put my tree up until 2nd week of December

@Sux2buthen Merry Christmas to you too, have a fab time enjoying the long and lovely lead up 🎄🎄🎄

Mlanket · 09/11/2024 18:32

Some of us are working then.

Why does that make a difference though? Presumably you don’t work 24 hrs & 7 days a week? I love the summer too when the dc are off school even though I work the majority of it.

The time between Christmas Day and NYs day are my favourite time of year, I don’t really understand why you wouldn’t want to still have a tree around.

For the first few days certainly. But then I want to clean and have the house straight for New years. Plus we have 5 cats, 3 of which have also been enjoying the tree for 4 weeks so it's a tad worse for wear anyway

Mlanket · 09/11/2024 18:40

@K0OLA1D I get the cat thing, when ours were kittens I had to take the baubles off as they were always bloody in the thing. We see lots of family & friends in that time so it would just be weird for me to have all the decor away but I don’t put the tree up until mid Dec really. And I think I have very low cleaning standards so that’s not a motivation 😆😆

fiftiesmum · 09/11/2024 18:41

In our tradition Christmas doesn't start till Christmas eve sunset and ends at Candlemas Feb 2nd

I think lots on MN wanging on about lazy days with twinkling lights forget that some people only get a couple of days off.

I wanged on about this. I work in an industry that stays open over Christmas apart from Christmas Day and Boxing Day, but I don’t have a 9-5 Monday-Friday shift pattern, so I take advantage if how my shifts fall and book a couple of days of AL to lengthen the time I get off over Christmas. I’m off from the 19th this year and back in on 29th and 30th for that reason. But I have worked other days over that period including Boxing Day a couple of years when the company wanted to stay open. I always save some AL for it though and book it early in the year.

I say 3 of which. It was 2 last year. We currently have a kitten who will be 5 months by Christmas. I was preempting the carnage 🤣

I just think it's horses for courses. "You do you" as far as I'm concerned. When my kids were little, I put my tree up on the first weekend of December every year. I was quite keen to get it down by new years eve, but certainly not boxing day....that's still "christmas" to me. But I definitely wanted to start new years day with a "clean slate" with it all away and my house clean and tidy. This caused much hilarity to my MIL who liked her decorations up until the 12th night rule.

As my kids got older and into adulthood, I have found it harder each year to heave it all out the loft and find the enthusiasm to put it all up. I have still one of my adult kids here....I would put my tree up regardless....but I find I put out less and less "paraphernalia " each year. Each year it seems to get later in December, that it all goes up.

And yet this year, it's all change again, my tree will go up in the next couple of weeks because I have a 2 year old granddaughter who is extra excited by all the lights. We have already decided to go to town for her.

Tbh I don't think I've ever dusted any of my christmas stuff. It is what it is 😀. I do get the "over stimulation " of it all though at times. At times I think it's all pretty, cosy and christmassy....other days I do get omg it's all too much...

Gonegirl7 · 09/11/2024 18:54

We’ve put our outside lights up end of October as we wanted to support all our close neighbours with their Diwali lights (they all have coloured lights) so we joined in :)

inside decs up end of November

I very much agree with this!

A few posts with phrases like “I can’t understand why anyone would…” and I think… is it so hard to get that people have different preferences?

Im an end of November decorator and usually take it all down around 27/28th (not cause I am sick of it, contrary to popular MN belief,
just cause for me Christmas is over then, and it makes me sad to still see it up 🤣) but I accept that’s me, that’s how I like it. I don’t judge or struggle to understand anyone who puts theirs up any sooner, or later, or doesn’t take them down well into the new year… whatever suits you, go for it!

This is exactly me and my reasoning. It makes me depressed it's all over. So a clean and straight house makes me happy again!

Did you even both reading the post I was replying to? It said this: 'The daulys between Xmas and New Year are the best bit - lazy days, decorations up, seasonal food but none of the stress and obligations.'

My point was that if you're working you aren't having a lazy day and you're certainly not avoiding stress and obligation.

Lucky you if you have a stress free job with no obligations which allows you a lazy day. I don't. Which was the point you missed. Spectacularly!

Hear fucking hear. People on MN can be totally incapable of understanding that people are allowed to be different to them!

Some of the days between Christmas Eve & NYs are bank holidays & weekend days so even when I have worked a few days between Im still able finish work, get home, relax , be lazy & eat seasonal food etc. I wasn’t aware this made me lucky…

@K0OLA1D I do love the kitten stage though, so cute, enjoy!

Are you sure you aren’t projecting how you feel about having Christmas decs up early? I know people who put up decorations now, I don’t know any who moan about dusting. They are often the exact opposite sort of people. Laid back enjoying life. I say this because you backed it up with

I don’t put my tree up until 2nd week of December

Anyway, mines going up next week, Merry Christmas! 🎄

In November?!?!

Might stop her knocking all my books off the book shelf having a tree to keep her occupied 🤣

XenoBitch · 09/11/2024 21:53

I don't understand people who put their xmas decs up now. That is almost 2 months of the year with xmas in your face. And there is a section in Hell for people who have animated singing ornaments in their front garden.

My parents didn't see the point in going all out with decorations once all of us had left home... but they still get the tree out (it is up and decorated in their box room, so they literally just have to carefully carry it downstairs). One year, they argued about who was going to put it away.... it was a classic "you wanted it out, so you put it away" thing, except neither could remember who it was.
I visited them later on in June, and the tree was still in the living room.... with the lights on too.

Mlanket · 09/11/2024 22:05

😆😆😆

HarrisObviously · 09/11/2024 23:29

When we were children my mum and dad used to put the tree up (a real one) after we had gone to bed on Xmas Eve. They must have had quite a late night.
So we went from nothing Xmassy to full on Xmas overnight.
Tree came down on 12th night.

cherish123 · 10/11/2024 00:00

I've never heard of putting them up in November. It would have to became artificial tree, presumably. I think early December is too early. I'm usually 15th-18th ish December, depending on the day.

cherish123 · 10/11/2024 00:04

VegTrug · 09/11/2024 21:41

In November?!?!

Agreed. It's quite weird when it's still November and not at all Christmas-y. You'd be fed up by 23rd December.

Mlanket · 10/11/2024 00:38

My council doesn’t start collecting the trees until the 9th of Jan so I suppose that why I don’t really understand the idea of taking it down on the 27th etc as what would I do with it.

TiredCatLady · 10/11/2024 00:45

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/11/2024 14:59

What kind of monster puts up Christmas decorations in early November?

Decorations go up the Saturday nearest to Christmas day and down on twelfth night

This.

Absolute lunatics putting decorations up in flipping October.

I’m already sick of the adverts and the aisles of crap in the shops.

mondaytosunday · 10/11/2024 00:56

I saw a tree up today and earlier this week a few houses had put lights up outside. I love all things Christmas but I don't think the season has started til after Thanksgiving at the very earliest, even if I have ordered the food and bought some gifts. Our tree goes up first weekend in December and I feel it's over by New Year's, though it doesn't come down then.
