People putting up Xmas trees and decs now and moan about they are sick of dusting

I have a friend who has posted on FB with her tree and other decs up. She puts up tree etc about this time of year. Yet hear her moaning about how dusting the lounge takes longer due to tree etc.

Then have a colleague who probably puts up her tree about 10 later and her DH moans he he is sick of the sight of the tree a week before Christmas.

Both put tree away on Boxing Day! Noticed this a lot with the Xmas tree twirlies.

If you get fed up of the extra dusting, sight of it before Xmas, don’t put up your Decs up early then!

I don’t put my tree up until 2nd week of December

I put my tree and decs up once every three years. When I do, it's the day before my DS and DIL come to stay. This year, I'll put them up on the 23rd. I don't bother otherwise, no point just for me.

They'll be straight down and away on the 28th when they go home.

But I'm sooo excited that this year is the year I have a Christmas 🎄

EmmaMaria · 09/11/2024 17:49

I have found that strategically placed tinsel etc means I can avoid dusting for a month!

Cats help. Always knocking shit off so always moving it 🤶

Mine went up today. Well, two of them. The rest tomorrow
I love it and I'll be sad to take them down in the new year and not a day before that. I love Christmas and winter 🎅🏼

So, are you in full Christmas mode now or is it like a job on the list which has been ticked off early?

Sux2buthen · 09/11/2024 17:56

Full Christmas mode, I'm making a hamper as we speak

BadPeopleFan · 09/11/2024 17:56

I bet you are out shopping and buying coffees and eating out on your days off. Or perhaps you might need a trip to a GP or hospital. Good job those people are doing those jobs then though.Else where would we all be.

Of course I am, if places are open why shouldn't I be?
Some people are happy to work over Christmas for various reasons but if you are not happy rather than moaning about it and looking for constant sympathy for doing your job you probably should apply for something that closes over Christmas!

Wow. I love Christmas but I just don't think I could maintain the level of energy it requires to be Christmassy for this long. Kudos.

The people that I know that have them up for the minimum time and tend to boast that they have them down on Boxing Day or the 27th tend to be pretty miserable people the rest of the year too.

And before someone say well I am not like that, I am saying my experience from the people I know and the “well that’s it over” updates appear when the duff duffs from the Christmas Day Eastenders episode are barely done

Its always been up the first weekend in December and down the first weekend after New Year for me, both when I was growing up and now in my own house

I don’t get the “well it’s over now” people at all. It’s still the festive season for me until after the New Year

Feeling totally mutual. I don't get, with religion aside, those that keep them up after school and work starts back up.

Difference is, I don't care and wouldn't judge anyone either way.

Sux2buthen · 09/11/2024 18:05

@ByMerryKoala GrinI don't know what it is, I've always been the same.

I very rarely dust so that's not an issue! My tree usually goes up early December and away around new year, all depending on my days off as I work in retail.
I know COVID and lockdown caused many people to put their tree up early that year just for something to do and add a bit of sparkle, maybe it's becoming more normal to do so.
(Btw my Halloween knick nacks are still out, maybe I'm just lazy!)

I never put my spooky stuff away. That's 365!

I’m with you!
For me, Christmas does really start in November. I get my Christmas planner out, plan, buy and wrap all presents. Buy and write Christmas cards. I think about new festive baking recipes and buy new sparkly dresses and cosy Christmas jumpers. Tree goes up and house is decorated third weekend in November. I love it!
And then by December, everything is done and organised and I enjoy all the seasonal socialising! Carolling, theatre shows, Christmas dinners with friends, festive murder mystery night, Christmas market trips, cosy Christmas film nights with the girls, work Christmas do, hosting and being hosted at friends houses for festive grazing boards etc etc. And I can do all of that without having to think about presents/wrapping/decorating etc, as all
of that was done in November!

Joewickscarpet · 09/11/2024 18:12

Second week of December, take down 6th. It's lovely that week between Christmas and New year. Chocolate and crappy films with the crimbo tree up . The people who put up in November are the ones who can't delay gratification and then are sick of by boxing day, no wonder.

NoWordForFluffy · 09/11/2024 18:15

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/11/2024 15:03

The daulys between Xmas and New Year are the best bit - lazy days, decorations up, seasonal food but none of the stress and obligations.

Some of us are working then.

Coolasfeck · 09/11/2024 18:17

We get a real tree and put a few Christmas ornaments around but no lights all over the house or tinsel on the ceiling. Kids would like it up as soon as Dec 1st but I won’t put it up until 2nd weekend of Dec and it comes back down on 2nd Jan (I try to combat dryness by regularly spraying it with water). That’s when festivities are over as far as I’m concerned.

Each to their own but I don’t understand people who want decorations up for 2 months. 1/6th of the year!

I am happy to wang on about my full 12 days holiday over Christmas (had to use a few days AL in the middle, the company isn't closed that long!).
It's one of the few perks of the job knowing I'll get a decent break at Christmas every year.
To all those that bleat on about working over Christmas......other jobs are available, if it bothers you so much apply for something that closes over Christmas! But then you wouldn't have anything to moan about....
My tree is going up on the 1st December and will come down just after new year.

Nobody was bleating, just pointing out that not everybody is off over the entire Christmas period.

HaddyAbrams · 09/11/2024 18:21

I know exactly what you mean @Xjk and know quite a few people who do the same. They also like to tell me I'm a grinch, a scrooge, and miserable because my tree won't go up until the Saturday before Christmas.

Oddly enough (actually entirely unsurprisingly) they then take their decs down by 27th Dec and come out with things like "ugh, I can't believe you still have your tree up. I just wanted my lounge back, can't stand the clutter"

No idea why it's clutter when it's actually Christmas, but lovely and cheerful when it's not Confused

Notreat · 09/11/2024 18:25

I hate the modern trend of putting the tree up early and taking it down on boxing day
Christmas time lasts until 12th night. And the tree should definitely be up until after new year's Day.

Sux2buthen · 09/11/2024 18:27

@CandyCane457 merry Christmas! It doesn't last long, I like to make the most of it

Nah. It shouldn't. I can do if the occupants want it. Definitely not 'definitely' in other peoples homes

Mlanket · 09/11/2024 18:29

The time between Christmas Day and NYs day are my favourite time of year, I don’t really understand why you wouldn’t want to still have a tree around.

I agree with this so much. Had an ex-colleague from a different team be offended that I didn’t give her more sympathy because she had worked Christmas. It was April and she was still harping about it after she told me about it in February where she said she knew she had to work it (It was literally in her contract before she signed it) and she worked from home so compared to others who don’t have that luxury I couldn’t understand why she was still moaning about it.

I have worked holidays away from home enthusiastically. It’s been easy money and more people than not don’t mind when those who do do it so they don’t end up having to.

Ive had times when I’ve worked, DH will be doing a few days this yr but it doesn’t stop us from enjoying that time.

For my friend who was unable to book BD and 27th really pissed her off, esp those colleagues who booked these days off last year have family living in the same town as they live and usually finish shifts at 2pm. They can go home, get changed and be with their families by 3pm.

My friend's nearest family are 2 hours drive away and she finishes at 7pm most shifts. I am sure her family would appreciate her visits at 9:30pm

Our eldest GD decorates our tree for us - been a tradition since she was little. She's twenty now and still does it for us albeit with help from some of our other GCs sometime in December. We put the tree together and they do the rest of the decoration along with lots of nibbles and sweets!! 😋
We have a Christmas tree in the front garden which we trim up with lights late November/early December. Sadly though it will be it's last Christmas as it is getting too big - so time to buy a new potted tree in the run up to Christmas and we can plant it in the new year. 🌲
