People putting up Xmas trees and decs now and moan about they are sick of dusting

I have a friend who has posted on FB with her tree and other decs up. She puts up tree etc about this time of year. Yet hear her moaning about how dusting the lounge takes longer due to tree etc.

Then have a colleague who probably puts up her tree about 10 later and her DH moans he he is sick of the sight of the tree a week before Christmas.

Both put tree away on Boxing Day! Noticed this a lot with the Xmas tree twirlies.

If you get fed up of the extra dusting, sight of it before Xmas, don’t put up your Decs up early then!

I don’t put my tree up until 2nd week of December

I'm jealous of those who don't work between Xmas and NY. My employers only closed on CD, BD and NYD. My days off are Thursday and Friday so going in 30/31 Dec.

January 6th is the day for taking down decorations! We put them up on 12th December. Before then means you just get sick of them.

What are Christmas tree twirlies? Wouldn't bother me the extra dusting......or the moaning 🎉

A twirly = pensioners would get a bus with their pass but had / have to wait until 9am or there abouts, if the bus arrived at 8.55 they would get on and say “ am I to early “ hence the name twirly 😂

I put my tree up about the 15th ish and take down on about the 4th or 5th. I get that it’s exciting having the tree up, but to me if you put it up to soon it’s not so magical by Christmas

I think lots on MN wanging on about lazy days with twinkling lights forget that some people only get a couple of days off.

@K0OLA1D because the Christmas season starts with Christmas day, it doesn't end with it. We seem to have, over the years, got that wrong.

Mine doesn't. My Christmas starts when we start doing Christmasy stuff and decorating. It's all over by NYE.

StrungWithSilverBellsAndFlowers · 09/11/2024 15:38

When I run the country I will make it illegal to put up Xmas decorations before 1 December, or pack them away before 12th night. Or maybe February.

I had a friend who used to make such a fuss about putting it up in November because she loved it. She'd then take it down on boxing day because she'd had enough. I always felt sad for her little boy who suddenly has all trace of christmas taken away 24 hours after the actual day. To me it's so much more than just the day. But then my mother would declare "that's it, done for another year" as soon as the last present was opened and it really pissed all over christmas for me.

My mother did this too! Also used to declare every year that Christmas was rubbish and only for kids. She was a right misery!

ByMerryKoala · 09/11/2024 15:47

You're meant to dust the tree? 🤯

Why?

CandyCane457 · 09/11/2024 16:02

Mine goes up third week in November and I definitely, definitely don’t get sick of it. I LOVE it.

I don’t take it down as early as Boxing Day but definitely before new year… depending what I’m up to it’s usually around 29th/30th and for me that’s just because I adore Christmas so much but after 26th I feel quite sad it’s all over, and I feel I’m prolonging the inevitable, so like to get it all down and then everything is tidied away and fresh for new year.

The Christmas period for some may begin on Christmas Day, but for me it is all of December, all the festive films, social plans, fun events… I love it all!

StrungWithSilverBellsAndFlowers · 09/11/2024 16:12

StarSlinger · 09/11/2024 15:59

Why?

Because I plan to be an irrational despot.

Nah, I honestly can't get too worked up about when (or if) people decorate for Christmas. Do what you want, if it makes you happy.

But I sometimes wish that the tradition of the season starting on 25th and ending on Twelfth Night hadn't been so comprehensively swept away. Not sure why 🤔

The fun of Christmas is in the run up and just after. As soon as NYE had happened it's back to the drudgery of normal life. It would depress me still having my Dec's up into the new year.

DancingLions · 09/11/2024 16:23

Mine are going up in November this year purely cos I have loads on between 1-24 December and I don't want to have that job hanging over me. I plan to have all my presents bought, wrapped etc too.

When I was younger I enjoyed the frantic race to christmas but now I don't! But I won't moan about dusting shelves 😂I just do them before/after, a bit of dust over Christmas is not an issue to me.

They'll probably come back down when DD goes back to Uni, whatever date that is. She likes having decorations up so I've never taken them down early.

Peopleinmyphone · 09/11/2024 16:24

I'd love to take everything down on boxing day, I enjoy the build up to Christmas but once it's done it's done. So makes sense to me to decorate early and take down early.
We actually get a tree first weekend of December usually and take stuff down around 27th/28th. I really don't care what others do.

BogRollBOGOF · 09/11/2024 16:35

People who want the decorations up for minimal time, put them up late and take down early are logical (although that's not my sentiment as I like the light and colour)

I've also noticed the pattern of twirly people being ones to proclaim their relief at putting them away ASAP after Christmas Day and regularly think "why did you rush to do it in November then?"

Mine go up at some point in December when I get chance and stay up until the 6th January. I hate it when all the festive cheer goes dark and you're left with the slog of time passing until spring creeps in.

I noticed the first fairy lights on a house last night. They were blue. I judged 😂

StarSlinger · 09/11/2024 16:53

There have been loads of lit up windows with fairy lights around here for Diwali. I've loved seeing them this early.

neverbeenskiing · 09/11/2024 17:01

There's so much hate and misery in the world, why can't we just let people enjoy the things they enjoy without snarkiness or criticism? If people want to put their decs up early and take them down early then why shouldn't they? It's their home so it doesn't affect anyone else.

My friend works at a supermarket and couldn’t get BD off last year.

The number of customers who came in saying “it’s a disgrace that you are open today”

Erm if you think it’s a disgrace, why are in a shop on BD? It’s idiotic people who make head offices think it’s ok to continue to open on BD

OP posts:
Xjk · 09/11/2024 17:14

For me I love Christmas. Not the Christmas creep (things getting in shops earlier) or the Xmas songs.

Sainsburys used to wait until Remembrance Sunday or Nov 12th - whatever comes later, to put up ceiling hangings and put advert on TV. This year I saw a glimpse ot the ad last Friday (1st) and my friend in post above put the ceiling decs after store closed on Sunday. Every colleague she works with think it’s terrible.

Itisjustmyopinion · 09/11/2024 17:15

The people that I know that have them up for the minimum time and tend to boast that they have them down on Boxing Day or the 27th tend to be pretty miserable people the rest of the year too.

And before someone say well I am not like that, I am saying my experience from the people I know and the “well that’s it over” updates appear when the duff duffs from the Christmas Day Eastenders episode are barely done

Its always been up the first weekend in December and down the first weekend after New Year for me, both when I was growing up and now in my own house

I don’t get the “well it’s over now” people at all. It’s still the festive season for me until after the New Year

Ollybob · 09/11/2024 17:19

I very rarely dust so that's not an issue! My tree usually goes up early December and away around new year, all depending on my days off as I work in retail.
I know COVID and lockdown caused many people to put their tree up early that year just for something to do and add a bit of sparkle, maybe it's becoming more normal to do so.
(Btw my Halloween knick nacks are still out, maybe I'm just lazy!)

Wellingtonspie · 09/11/2024 17:23

My children are begging for the decorations to come down and we still have Halloween out. Ours are always up at some point in November and get taken down in January.

Need something to brighten up the miserable weather of just grey and cold from now till late March.

I am happy to wang on about my full 12 days holiday over Christmas (had to use a few days AL in the middle, the company isn't closed that long!).
It's one of the few perks of the job knowing I'll get a decent break at Christmas every year.
To all those that bleat on about working over Christmas......other jobs are available, if it bothers you so much apply for something that closes over Christmas! But then you wouldn't have anything to moan about....
My tree is going up on the 1st December and will come down just after new year.

I bet you are out shopping and buying coffees and eating out on your days off. Or perhaps you might need a trip to a GP or hospital. Good job those people are doing those jobs then though.Else where would we all be.
