Posted here as it gets the most traffic. This is by far the worst news I’ve heard all year. Imagine at the age you were meant to start secondary school instead being forced to marry and have sex with an older man. Completely disgusting!!!

Do we have Americans moving to this country and treating 10 year old girls in this way? I doubt it. However, we have a lot of issues with Muslim men and sexual abuse of girls in the UK - see Rochdale.

Sadly the men who do this have such a warped ingrained mindset that they will happily marry off/sell their daughters to suffer the same too.

Exactly. People always highlight what happens in Muslim countries but turn a blind eye to the rest of the world. My DH's Indian grandma (Hindu) was married at 13. You wouldn't believe the things I read about the lives of girls and women in some South American countries (Christian). Basically, women and girls suffer all over the world. We're lucky that it shocks us because to many, it's just seen as normal, their reality.
Marriage at 9 is horrific, and I truly hope this change in law isn't approved.

Re Christianity, I was brought up as a Catholic and educated at convent school but opted out of Catholicism as soon as I was able (at 12, I chose not to be confirmed), because the teachings of the church around woman didn't sit easily with me, even at a young age.

I could opt out though. I think that's important to note.

I had initially hoped that people might be interested in trying to get involved in helping the organisations challenging this bill.

Child marriage existed in the past and still exists today. The reality is that there is no need for it in the modern world. The men in the modern world who want to marry children, want that for one reason, really. Because they want to exercise a deviant and abusive interest in children and not get in trouble for it.

Rather than using this as another "Islam bad, everyone else good", when this is a global, cross-cultural issue, please consider supporting one of the multiple organisations acting to prevent this and other similar assaults on the rights of women and girls.

I think this is just awful in the 21st century anywhere. There are many decent people of the muslim faith I guess who would be better placed than us to voice their distaste. They should be the driver for the change that is so desperately needed to protect their children.

I know Germany very well and no, the age of consent can't be lowered to 6. I'm wondering (though I haven't checked the Wikipedia link) whether it's managed to conflate it, somehow, with the gender self-ID law that requires a child aged 6 (or 5?) and above to consent if their parents want to change their legal gender.

The age of consent in Germany is 14. (Too young IMO. It is, at least, illegal for teachers. coaches, youth workers etc to have relationships with under-18s they are working with).

And in several places in that letter, and more throughout the bible, qualifications for elders include them being a man.

The word "priest" isn't used here because priests are Old Testament mediators between people and God, and therefore no longer required after Jesus' atonement. Churches are meant to be led by elders.

Well, child marriage is legal in quite a few states in the US. 4 states even have no minimum age limit, if certain criteria such as parental consent are met. Sometimes, simply the child being pregnant is sufficient for a court to agree to marriage. Plus in some states, minors cannot legally divorce or leave their spouses and some domestic violence shelters refuse to accept minors.

Child sexual abuse and child marriage are global rights issues. Perverts are going to be perverts, regardless of the colour of their skin or the faith they claim to practise.
