Posted here as it gets the most traffic. This is by far the worst news I’ve heard all year. Imagine at the age you were meant to start secondary school instead being forced to marry and have sex with an older man. Completely disgusting!!!

Iraq to lower the ‘age of consent’ for girls to nine

A new law proposed by ultra conservative Shia Muslim parties seeks to strip women and girls of their rights

Was the US war in Iraq not enough for you? Incidentally women's rights were better before they got involved.

Gosh I’m concerned you think women’s rights were better before the Iraq war. It may be worth doing some reading up on that.

I didn’t know about this until the Telegraph reported it & it’s absolutely disgusting.

Attempts to try to minimise it by saying it’s old news or whatever is horrible also. What if it were your daughter or even yourself as a 9 year old? Why is the whole world not appalled by this?

It's horrific but it's hardly surprising or the "worst thing I've read all year" or something which is what the OP said. I'm suspicious of the motives of people bringing it up now.

Naddd · 09/11/2024 08:31

You mean the very terrorist organisations it created?

MrsPeregrine · 09/11/2024 08:32

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 09/11/2024 07:49

Here we go. A megalomaniac is in charge in the US but the Telegraph wants to distract us with a PROPOSED law.
Iraq was a better place for women before the West got involved.

Any excuse to bring up Trump. I’m not exactly his biggest fan, but he certainly wouldn’t allow this in the US. You just sound like another Western loathing lefty.

It’s what is said on the Wikipedia page. There is no additional clarification.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_consent_by_country

It says 14 on that Wikipedia page ( not that Wikipedia is necessarily 100% accurate). There are lots of reputable sources saying the age of consent in Germany is minimum 14

And yet here you are trying to minimise it. I absolutely do think people should be aware. What are your motives for not wanting it to be in the news?

Yet another threat to the safety and rights of women, and another example of how highly conservative men are dominating politics and placing women at risk. Politicians and activists prevented similar legislation in the past, and are trying to again. But, with a number of very influential and conservative politicians pushing this and the recent failure of the courts to intervene, the risk does feel quite real, which is a horrible thought for the many people in the country who want girls and women to have more, not fewer, rights.

The current standard age of consent is 18, but can drop to 15 in some cases with legal approval. Creating a route through which men could marry children of primary school age is something that should not be welcomed anywhere in the world. Wherever in the world she might be, a 9-year-old girl should be able to be safe from abuse.

There are quite a few organisations working to oppose this draft bill and to defend against the erosion of women's rights in Iraq and elsewhere in the world. These cross a wide spectrum of political viewpoints, faiths and cultures. I'd encourage everyone concerned about bills like this to get involved. Organisations like Amnesty International, Musawah, Aman Women Alliance, Girls Not Brides and more, are opposing this bill and other threats to women's rights. Please support them if you can. Every donation, every person becoming more informed, every act of practical or emotional support does help.

Fucking hell.

And women in Afghanistan not allowed to speak, even to one another.

The horrors of life for women and girls in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and other Muslim countries hardly bears thinking about. Not sure what Western governments can do other than condemning these laws and giving their support to Israel.

You need to educate yourself. Particularly about the treatment of women of Hasidic and other orthodox Jewish sects.

What do you think of the consent law in the op? Age 9

There seems to be a bit of a pattern here. Interfere in another country's politics, end up with extreme governments and human rights disasters. Iraq, Afghanistan, Congo and many more. Western imposed puppet governments never last

The west should never have meddled in the Middle East.

She didn't call anyone a racist idiot, she said that they sounded like one.

You, on the other hand, clearly insulted Muslims with your post. Nasty.

HermioneWeasley · 09/11/2024 08:50

It’s disgraceful and appalling. I read yesterday that Libya is introducing mandatory burka as well.

rights of women and girls, never great under those regimes, are hurtling backwards.

you can’t blame Trump or Israel for what these vile theocracies are doing to women and girls. And the comment about immigration increasing is also a red herring as its not women and girls who are fleeing those countries, it’s men who are bringing their misogyny with them.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to turn the history clock back 1000 years.

Oh for goodness sake, we all know that it was implied that the poster was racist. Islam is NOT a race for a start. Islamist dominated countries ARE appalling for women’s rights. That is a fact.

lasagnelle · 09/11/2024 08:52

How is the world allowing this to happen

I'm not a Muslim and I found your statement very racist, and not at all "innocent".

As @MissyB1 said, not all Muslims are the same. Similar to Christians really, there are various sects and divisions who interpret the "laws" very differently; they pick & choose the interpretations and writings that suit them. An example of this is that nobody as yet has managed to show me the place in the Bible that says women can never be priests, yet many Christian sects still ban women from this.

Oh yes, let's give support to Israel who are killing tens of thousands of people in Palestine. 70% of whom are women and children. Or do those women and children not matter?

Its not just muslim countries. There are child marriages in the US with girls as young as 10 .

That is VERY different to reduce img the age of ‘consent’ to 9. Name one Christan led country that doesn’t allow women to speak, drive, or leave the country without a man

Anyotherdude · 09/11/2024 09:00

I don’t think that any religion, other than Judaism, has the legacy diaspora that conflates any criticism of its tenets with racism @MissyB1
It is possible to be horrified at misogynistic diktats from a minority of disgusting, entitled MEN, without being racist, you know, and the disguise of these rulings under the mantle of a religion by some MEN has been common (and rightly condemned by many people) in recent times, without the condemnation being jumped on as “racist” (see Roman Catholic Church as a recent example).
The fact that most Muslims don’t agree with the excesses of some branches of Islam is comforting, but not helpful, if this belief isn’t used to oust the more extremist and backward regimes that seek to control women, and children, as though they are a sub-species of humankind…

@Batmanisaplaceinturkey , your comment shocks me it really does but I suppose it is to be expected from a certain type of person. Do you really hate everything that the right of politics represents so much or perhaps have such a determination to see no wrong in a particular special group that you can’t set aside any bigotry you may have to see the inhumanity and horrors in this ‘proposal’?
For your information it has been proposed before and rejected. The reason it warrants reporting now is that politically everything is now aligned to allow this to pass into law. Those poor little girls. 😢

Not in my name thanks.

Why is it that to people like you, Muslims are accountable for the actions of EVERY Muslim but nobody else is. Am I to blame for this now ? Is it my fault just because i am a muslim?
