Posted here as it gets the most traffic. This is by far the worst news I’ve heard all year. Imagine at the age you were meant to start secondary school instead being forced to marry and have sex with an older man. Completely disgusting!!!

Iraq to lower the ‘age of consent’ for girls to nine

A new law proposed by ultra conservative Shia Muslim parties seeks to strip women and girls of their rights

I did say this thread was to demonise Muslims and therefore justify what Israel is doing didn’t I? It’s not about women’s rights. If they cared about women/children they would be mourning the deaths of so many in Palestine instead of supporting and justifying it.

Exactly this^

JaneJeffer · 09/11/2024 13:12

I think you are right @Justiceeternal

I didn’t know about this until the Telegraph reported it & it’s absolutely disgusting.

Attempts to try to minimise it by saying it’s old news or whatever is horrible also. What if it were your daughter or even yourself as a 9 year old? Why is the whole world not appalled by this?

Totally agree. The whataboutery on this thread is disgusting.

Lentilweaver · 09/11/2024 13:14

If I had a child held hostage by Hamas there is no way I would want 20 or 30 times that number of innocent children( I stopped counting) to be slaughtered in retaliation, when they dont even know who Hamas is.

I don’t really think this is a Islamic issue. I think that some men, not all men but certainly enough of them, are abusive predators. They find their ways into positions of authority and use it as a shield against their own transgressions and enable the abuse of others. We see it everywhere police, charitable organisations (aid workers trading food for sex?), religious institutions, Hollywood, Harrods.

None of it is acceptable. Should we condemn each and every ingress against womens and girls rights, absolutely. My issue is not with Islam in Afghanistan or Iraq it’s with the men who are imposing their own “interpretations” which infringes on the rights and freedoms of women and girls and enables abuse.

There are plenty of Muslims who would disagree with hardline sharia law. The arguement shouldn’t be about religion. It’s those of us who think woman and girls should have autonomy, be respected and their voices heard against those who don’t . Regardless of religion or race.

Beautifully put, Lovelysummerdays

As you rightly suggest it's not a religious issue at all but a cultural one. Trouble is, while discussing purely religious tenets might seem "safe", the slightest criticism around cultural issues brings out the virtue signalling and accusations of this and that, and so the situation trundles on

RevelryMum · 09/11/2024 13:16

God how would their little bodies even survive that , I suppose a lot of them don't makes me feel physical sick . What a horrible world we live in that children are abused like this when I was that age I was playing with my Barbie's .

Not to the extent of killing 41000 civilians, no. And various organisations which have investigated Israels’ claims that Hamas are using the population as human shields, have found no evidence of it that meets international law. They considered Israel to be using human shielding allegations to justify their own war crimes against civilians, saying that when state actors, such as Israel, kill civilians, it’s become standard to describe them as human shields. And Israel’s response is widely considered to be neither reasonable nor proportionate under international law. You neglected to mention that the IDS have been using kidnapped Palestinians as human shields themselves. Forcing them into booby trapped homes and tunnels ahead of the soldiers. How is that any different ?

I would pretty much say Hamas using tunnels and dug outs under hospitals and schools is pretty much one of the definitions of ‘human shield’. There’s proof this is where most of Hamas are stationed. I think the West should send as much help as possible in to Gaza to eradicate Hamas. Getting rid of the terrorists would end the war, the hostages released and normal life resumed.

I see continue with the oppression and apartheid? You are delusional aren’t you? Equal rights for everyone, that is what is required for peace in Israel. Address the root cause of the creation of Hamas then you will have peace.

So Iraq is ruled by open paedophiles! How disgusting. And a direct result of toppling Hussein (a secular Muslim) in 2003. Thanks again, US.

Oh really? What percentage of women are you talking about?

No idea. If you know, feel free to share. It's academic regardless.

This narrative of Saddam as a secularist is touted a lot, Grammarnut, along with the trope of the west being to blame for everything, but it gets complicated by the fact that he was just another opportunist who'd switch religion on and off according to what suited

Another useful piece here ...admittedly it's from a US institution but it makes a darned sight more sense than anything Iran's mad dog mullahs have ever produced : https://www.hoover.org/research/legacy-saddams-islam

ToWhitToWhoo · 09/11/2024 13:48

How utterly horrible.

ToWhitToWhoo · 09/11/2024 13:50

PS I don't see what this has to do with Israel, one way or another.

Lentilweaver · 09/11/2024 13:51

I think the title of this post needs to be amended now we know the law has not been passed.

Namerchangee · 09/11/2024 13:52

Fucking disgusting. No other way to describe it.

LBFseBrom · 09/11/2024 13:52

It's ridiculous. nine is far too young, however I wonder if it will actually happen.

TrishM80 · 09/11/2024 13:55

wrongthinker · 09/11/2024 07:44

Fucking hell.

And women in Afghanistan not allowed to speak, even to one another.

The horrors of life for women and girls in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and other Muslim countries hardly bears thinking about. Not sure what Western governments can do other than condemning these laws and giving their support to Israel.

Israel bombing women and children in tents and burying tens of thousands of them under a pile of rubble is helpful how, exactly?

It didn’t. I live in Iraq. There were large protests and public backlash.

I think also important to note - the article is misleading in timing. The article is from 2 days ago with an opening line that “Iraq is poised to….” And another poster mentioned they got a “breaking news” alert….. Iraq is not poised to do that AT ALL, this law was proposed in August and also shut down by September. I guess western newspapers are just picking it up now.

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 09/11/2024 14:01

If they don’t know they are going to be raped, why are they stockpiling abortion pills?

What a fucking stupid question. That's like asking why do buildings have sprinkler systems when they may never set on fire. It's risk management.

I would be a bit hypocritical for the USA to condemn anything when child marriage is legal in 37 states, 10 of which have no minimum age.

This is perfectly correct, @Fizzle1, but it still seems no bad thing to note it, given that with the regime in charge in Iran the outcry's unlikely to have shut the idea down permanently

To say nothing of the encouragement it'll have given some to just go ahead and do it anyway
