Another XL Bully Attack

Vicious XL Bully attack leaves five-year-old boy with life-changing injuries and needing facial reconstruction surgery | Daily Mail Online

Little Teddy needed 100 stitches in his face but was lucky to escape with his life.

Is it unreasonable now to ask the Government to give a warning in the media, that children are to be kept away from these dogs? Not to enter a house or garden where they're known to be? Even if told that the dog is safe, which they are not.
This little chap was visiting a home with his family when it struck.

XL Bully attack leaves young boy needing facial reconstruction surgery

A five-year-old boy has been left with life-changing injuries following a vicious mauling by an XL Bully in Scotland. His traumatised family who helplessly watched on in horror now want the breed banned.

There is no such thing as 'lock jaw' . Their anatomy is not unique and no breed has a jaw that functions as a locking mechanism. All they have is muscle and a very stubborn personality.

My 30kg malinois can dangle her entire body weight with a good grip. Zero locking needed.

Does it really matter?

The mauling they can undertake is seen weekly

I wouldn’t take my chances on my child being around a breed of dog that if it just happened to flip, whether that be the child’s fault or not would have the ability to lock their jaws and not let go! that will include all terriers then because terriers exhibit the same bite pattern. Its not a specific trait only of bull breed dogs

I never said it was. This thread is specifically about bullys hence why I’m talking about bullys

blueyismyg · 08/11/2024 19:04

@Mumofnarnia the lock jaw thing is irrelevant anyway if you have a dog that never attacks. Which most never do, thank god. Obviously you can't ever be 100% certain if any dog will attack. But that goes for any 'big' dog. I'm not sure why you're targeting bull breeds specifically.

I'm not arguing with you and I certainly don't care one bit about changing your views. My entire point was to highlight the fact that it's stupid to compare all bull breeds against an XL bully which is in a league of its own due to reasons I've listed several times.

We need to totally rethink dog ownership in this country. Dogs should require a compulsory licence with a seize and destroy notice if a licence is not obtained within 7 days. No one has a right to dog ownership. The licence fee would fund the necessary wardens etc.

I'm not sure a licence would stop the breed doing what it will?

DifficultQuestion2 · 08/11/2024 19:24

My Ds nearly got attacked like this by a lockdown labrador. When big dogs turn nasty, it's incredibly difficult to cope with, because as soon as any one moves the dog is likely to move too and strike. It's the most awful situation to get into .

I wish there were more controls on dogs generally. In the parks at the moment it's pretty dire tbh.

BelgianBiscuit · 08/11/2024 19:25

@EasternStandard my post wasn't aimed specifically to you. A ratting terrier could choose not to drop a rat and no one would claim that they have lock jaw. Both share the same shake to kill characteristic.

I think if you're so passionate about this, at least be factually correct.

I don't work with XLs because they have poor drive, they don't care about working for their handler. Their strength makes them difficult to handle, and unsound temperament is in their genetics. I train security dogs, so am well aware of what a dog attack looks like.

If licensed dog handlers won't work with XLs I'm perplexed that anyone would have one in a family home.

Oh ffs yes I get it I’ve been told many times on this thread they don’t ’lock their jaws’ whoopy do I got the ‘terminology’ wrong! Still makes them killer dogs in my eyes that won’t let go of their victim! That’s my point. And yes other breeds of dogs have been known to kill. This thread is specifically about bullys though so I’m talking about bullys.

Being so foully and personally rude about the victim of a dog attack and their family is not going to help you in any way shape or form make your point.

You may have found my ramblings about the social stereotypes conjured up from that whole sorry ordeal rude, but I bet I'm not wrong.

KeebabSpider · 08/11/2024 19:42

They need to be culled. Then we need very strict licencing for all breeders, and all ownership of dogs.

I've always had bull breed dogs, various from SBT, boxers to bostons and now an SBT and Boston x staff. My dogs always react to verbal command and understand the word stop in all circumstances. But my dogs don't have "lock jaw" (whatever that is) are small dogs, and have a good temperament. These XL bully are unstable and the original stock dog in their breeding was pitbull. Cull the bastard things, they are of no use and can't be considered suitable pets either. Perhaps whilst we are at it something should be done about the fact most of these gum tree "staffie dogs" are not SBT but have infact a lot of pitbull in them. Going back 30 years or so to when Chavs were interbreeding staffs with pitbulls. I see these dogs everywhere and I'd love to see behind the statistics because I'd bet all I have most of these Staff attacks are actually long legged athletic dogs that conform to the pitbull type standard.

Blueberrymuffino · 08/11/2024 19:54

3rd article I have seen in a week relating to XL Bully attacks.. sorry but these animals need culling.

Does anyone know if there are any petitions????

Dymaxion · 08/11/2024 20:05

Staffies are small dogs, much smaller than the average spaniel. Or they should be, of course there will be any number of backyard breeders who throw another breed into the mix to make it bigger/longer legged/bigger headed etc and still call it a staffie, when it isn't really.
I used to have a big dog when my children were little, not a bull breed, but similar in stature to a doberman, if he had turned ( just as any breed is capable of ) I could have pulled him off, if he had been an XL I wouldn't have stood a chance and neither do any of their owners.

Quaversss · 08/11/2024 20:08

Is there a petition anywhere to have all XL bullies culled? I'm sure there must be. If it reaches a certain amount of signatures it has to be considered in parliament. I would happily sign as would most sane people I should imagine.

Worse than smoking and some drug taking.

Given a choice I would much rather my DC went to the house of a smoker or someone smoking weed than a dangerous dog

Yes, same here. And I am totally against drug use of any kind.

I ring ho into a house with one, let alone take my Dc to one.

I would also sign!!

If there isn't one.. we should create one

Visiting a new salon there was a Staffy curled up in a corner. The hairdresser noticed my side eye and assured me he was gentle and harmless. She went on to say she'd had his littermate too
Apparently they'd been twins. I asked if the other dog was at home. She replied that he'd had to be pts after he attacked a child in the salon who'd been running up and down .
.

DysonSphere · 08/11/2024 20:22

Poor sweet baby😞 I really hope he isn't left with any permenant scars.

Blueberrymuffino · 08/11/2024 20:22

'However, some 55,000 dogs have been registered with Defra, meaning the majority of XL Bully owners have kept their pets'

Not so reassuring that there are so many roaming around our streets / parks / outside our homes

Only 405 have been compensated as they chose to put them to sleep

Dymaxion · 08/11/2024 20:25

It would also be much kinder from a welfare of the dog point of view for these dogs to have a day of the best snacks ever, a trip to the vet and a forever sleep, than being dragged out of the house by strangers or shot by a Police marksman, when they inevitably turn.
But the owners of these dogs aren't that bothered about the welfare of anyone else, dog or innocent child, just their ego's.

The sooner this becomes common knowledge the better.

I’ve just sat and read the whole thing. I wonder how many XL Bully owners will read it.

Bobkite · 08/11/2024 20:42

"However, some 55,000 dogs have been registered with Defra, meaning the majority of XL Bully owners have kept their pets'"

55,000 of them? And that's just the fuckers that are registered. What a horrible thought😧

I'd happily sign a petition. Fuck it I'd happily march the streets in London if someone wants to organise a protest to get them culled!
