Knowingly stealing - food shop delivery

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:45

We order from one of the main supermarkets. On the day of the delivery (last week), I decided to cancel the shop as many of my plans had changed so i didn’t need some of the stuff that had been ordered.

Anyway, the food van turned up and I had a hunch that if I accepted the order I could get the groceries and still get the refund. Which is exactly what happened. It was a risk but I still needed majority of the groceries ordered so thought I’d chance it. We had similar happen once before but we were honest in that scenario.

Even if the supermarket comes back and want me to rectify the error/pay up I can do so - that’s no problem.

I know it’s wrong but I believe the majority would do the same.

Be honest would you?

I just think it's pretty shitty. Someone is paying for that, probably the rest of us in small extra costs. Or maybe someone gets in trouble for the mistake and you would have messed up someone else's life.

This conscience thing is probably why I'm not rich...

Seashellssanctuary · 07/11/2024 14:21

@Waitingforthecold a £10 voucher is compensation not a Christmas shop. That's no better than the OP

Kimmeridge · 07/11/2024 14:21

So when the opportunity presented itself I thought I’d chance it

So you planned it. You're no better than a shoplifter. I hope you get found out and blacklisted.

I might accept £10 any other time. But not 2 days before Christmas, left without food and without the refund back in the account so we couldn’t have gone out and bought more food…

Just call up and offer to pay. Not rocket science.

DysmalRadius · 07/11/2024 14:23

The frustrating thing for me is that this kind of behaviour leads to less flexibility and more irritating hoops to jump through when you do have a genuine need to cancel last minute or rearrange things outside the normal time frame.

Thatsmoneyhoney · 07/11/2024 14:23

Was this asda by any chance? It's their error! I've unknowingly done the same before. Partner cancelled the order but hadn't told me in time before it was delivered.

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:55

I’m not boasting. Never once stole before. Always try do the right thing normally. I just chanced it. I have to be honest we were hosting a dinner party which didn’t go ahead so the nice items - wine, meat just tempted me to chance it.

Pay for the groceries, by giving the money back.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 07/11/2024 14:23

No, I wouldn't have done this. I don't steal.

Fluufer · 07/11/2024 14:24

I would absolutely not steal a weekly shop. That's appalling and makes everything more expensive for everyone. What a twat.

CaptainBeanThief · 07/11/2024 14:25

Even when I have been on my arse and I mean absolutely on my arse I have gone without because I'm not the scum of the earth lol.
You literally have ZERO morals and now you have come on here expecting everyone to cheer you on and agree with you haha
Jog on with you and your trampy mates

Mipil · 07/11/2024 14:25

IME experience, every time I have been sent incorrect items or had someone else’s groceries delivered, I have called and been told to keep the items for free. Once they have been delivered, they can’t accept many items back because there is a risk of contamination or tampering, or that items have been stored at the wrong temperature. Ocado once let me keep 6 bottles of Prosecco that were misdelivered, refunded the 6 bottles of pop that I had actually ordered for a kids party, and gave me £10 for the inconvenience. Honesty is the best policy…

I have worked for supermarkets, they won't notice and they really won't care. Once the shopping is on the van, it's easier to just have it gone than bring it back and put it in shelfs again. Which probably won't happen it will just be wasted anyway.

This is exactly what I assumed. They are a supermarket not the FBI.

Oh well, fuck it then. Let’s all become thieves.

I genuinely don't think "the majority" of people would do this. I can think of maybe 1 or 2 people who would do this if and only if they were really on the bones of their arse struggling.

Ah, so now you taking the stolen shopping is actually helping to stop food waste. You really are a little eco warrior aren’t you, maybe you should apply for the POW EarthShot prize next year. And if you don’t get it maybe you and your equally dishonest friend can work out a system for stealing that too.

Oldermum84 · 07/11/2024 14:26

Yes. They're not exactly going to be able to put it all back on the shelf in the shop are they. It would most likely get binned. What a waste. It's the shop's fault, you cancelled it for genuine reasons, they shouldn't have delivered it.

@Waitingforthecold but you got the food, you're not going to convince anybody but yourself that you werent dishonest

Felford · 07/11/2024 14:27

This happened to me - I called to cancel as I was going to be late home because of train delays. The van turned up late anyway - I explained the situation to the driver and he had no problem with me accepting the delivery which I was happy to do as I needed the food! I called customer services afterwards to try and pay but they said that as it was cancelled on their system they had no way of reinstating the delivery and taking payment. Clear conscience as I did at least try to pay.

Wish I'd ordered more champagne..

Vaxtable · 07/11/2024 14:27

The difference is you made a mistake the op intended to be a thief and a scummy tramp 😂

dovetail22uk · 07/11/2024 14:28

Supermarkets are capitalist b**tards so take what you can get. Anyone moaning has more money than sense.

Penguintimes · 07/11/2024 14:28

I wouldn’t do this on purpose because I’d be scared of being banned by the supermarket, but if I was in your exact same position I’d do the same, I think. I wouldn’t do it if I had plenty of money, but I don’t, so treats are few and far between in this house. I can’t really judge because I once had a crate of wine delivered to my doorstep - couldn’t work out who had sent it: no invoice, no identifying label. I put it in the garage in the end, figured I’d work out what to do about it when I got the chance. Then, honest to God, I just forgot about it. I found the crate again during a clear out about a year later at which point I decided we might as well crack open a bottle or two. We’re about half way through the crate now. It might have been a gift from someone, I suppose, but tbh that’s incredibly unlikely.

booisbooming · 07/11/2024 14:29

I have much slacker morals when it comes to big corporations than most people on here but ffs this is bad karma and way too extreme. Like, I wouldn't rush to tell them if they gave me 2 bottles of wine instead of 1 but this is not cool.

Having said that, if you rang them up and fessed up or said someone else in your house accepted the delivery without you knowing and you're not really sure what to do because you don't need these items and would they like to come and collect them, they might tell you to keep them. Just saying.
