Knowingly stealing - food shop delivery

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:45

We order from one of the main supermarkets. On the day of the delivery (last week), I decided to cancel the shop as many of my plans had changed so i didn’t need some of the stuff that had been ordered.

Anyway, the food van turned up and I had a hunch that if I accepted the order I could get the groceries and still get the refund. Which is exactly what happened. It was a risk but I still needed majority of the groceries ordered so thought I’d chance it. We had similar happen once before but we were honest in that scenario.

Even if the supermarket comes back and want me to rectify the error/pay up I can do so - that’s no problem.

I know it’s wrong but I believe the majority would do the same.

Be honest would you?

Well I would just make up that there had been a communication error with husband.

Shocking! You ought to wear a mask and a striped jumper

Honestly, for the past day or so the world has seemed a far darker place. I generally try to see the good in people. This thread has really upset me for some reason. The vast majority of people are trying to go about their business and here is an example of blatant theft.

I can't work out your motive for posting this OP.

Well I would just make up that there had been a communication error with husband.

If that worked, that’d be fine. As you can see from this thread, anyone considering some free groceries is in a teeny weeny minuscule evil minority so there’s absolutely no need to worry about doing this, as it’s a once in a blue moon event that supermarkets can well afford. Enjoy!

Not unless the issue is picked up by the supermarket.

It hopefully will be.

Futurethinking2026 · 07/11/2024 14:03

They only allow you to do this once! I know this as I called on the morning to try and stop and order as I have forgotten to edit my initial 'dummy' shop to reserve the slot. When i tried to do the same a few months later I was told they can only can cancel after the cut off once (assuming for the people that have worked out this trick). I did return the one bottle of champagne I had checked out with.

I think cancelling with good reason and them still sending it and you not having the time / will to call them and correct what is ultimately their error is very different to 'getting the idea' and still needing the groceries.

Onthesideofthespiders · 07/11/2024 14:04

I wouldn’t. I live rurally and we have very limited options for food shop deliveries and I wouldn’t want to be banned from one! It’s just not a nice way to behave though.

Teenagerantruns · 07/11/2024 14:05

I have worked for supermarkets, they won't notice and they really won't care. Once the shopping is on the van, it's easier to just have it gone than bring it back and put it in shelfs again. Which probably won't happen it will just be wasted anyway.

CheekySwan · 07/11/2024 14:05

I would have kept it but probably thought payment would have gone through. I'd have called if it hadn't

We have takeaways delivered to us sometimes that aren't ours, had about 5 this year, answer the door, they don't say anything and just hand us food, there are 5 of us in my house and whoever answers the door presume someone else has ordered it, it has our address on a plaque right next to the front door. The takeaways though all come in generic packaging so we can't even call the company that sent them to tell them.

RunningForMySanity · 07/11/2024 14:06

Nah I don’t think I could do that. If it was a random item they put in by accident or something like that but this one is a bit more than that and sounds more deliberate on your side.
I once had it that the supermarket called me to say they couldn’t deliver last minute and I was quite annoyed so they immediately sent me a £10 voucher compensation. Later, they called again to say they actually could fit us in and did deliver. I used that voucher code on my next shop but still felt a bit guilty 🤣 I’d not be able to cope with the guilt of stealing an entire shop!

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 07/11/2024 14:06

I certainly would not.

susiedaisy1912 · 07/11/2024 14:07

I'd be tempted but my conscience would get the better of me and I wouldn't do it.

Ponter · 07/11/2024 14:07

i certainly didn’t submit my order thinking I would then cancel it in the hope of getting free groceries.

I just knew that my friend had the same happen and she got away with it.

So I didn’t tell the driver that I had cancelled the order when he turned up as I had an inkling I could get away with it like my friend.

I know it is wrong though.

This. Our local Morrisons has taken to locking alcohol behind glass doors because of the incidence of shoplifting. You’re worse, you couldn’t even be arsed to go to the shop!

The rest of us have to pay for your dishonesty.

corlan · 07/11/2024 14:07

It's not a victimless crime - we all end up paying higher prices to subsidise the people that steal off supermarkets.
You're not just robbing the rich, you're robbing the poor as well.

sillygoof · 07/11/2024 14:08

Would you just wheel a shopping trolley full of stuff out of the supermarket without paying for it? You’ve knowingly stolen all that stuff. Disgusting.

Peopleinmyphone · 07/11/2024 14:09

I wouldn't. I could have stolen someone else's shopping the last time I did online delivery because the driver was new and gave me a container of things that weren't mine. He was really appreciative that I was honest about it which I found quite odd at the time, but maybe others would have stolen the food and he would have got in trouble. Didn't even occur to me.

I don’t live rurally. If I get banned I can switch to pretty much any supermarket that delivers. The only reason we go to this supermarket is because there are a few supermarket own items I prefer

i don’t know how it happened. I rang the morning of the delivery as I could no longer do it on the app as it was too close to the delivery. So rang up. Saw that it showed up as cancelled on my app. And the van still showed up. This was 9 days ago.

Got the refund.

Similar happened to a friend (where I got idea) and she told me they never found out.

So you did this with the aim of getting a free shop.

You can dance around it as much as you like, but you are here boasting that you are so clever and look what you got away with

2Sensitive · 07/11/2024 14:10

I'm not sure I could do this. I think it would come back to bite you in some form or another.
If I ever did do it, I certainly wouldn't be telling any one on a forum where they eat you alive.

StormingNorman · 07/11/2024 14:10

I would call the supermarket and explain. They probably won’t bother coming to collect it. The admin, the time, the risk of contamination means they can’t sell it anyway. It’s probably not worth their while. At least you’ll not be worrying about what might happen though.

This is exactly what I assumed. They are a supermarket not the FBI.

This was deliberately planned, not just keeping a random item. So theft.

I had a random bag of stuff delivered with an order once. As I'd opened it, the chat bot told me to keep it. I'd whatsapped the street group to see if anyone was missing a bag. No one was. So I had all the ingredients for a beef bourgignon, thanks Morrisons! But I'd put effort into trying to sort it, so not theft.

This! I had an extra crate delivered once. DH was helping take it in (and wouldn’t have a notion what I’d get in a weeks shop). Only when I was putting it away, did I realise I’d a whole pile of extra items I hadn’t ordered. The thought of keeping it never crossed my mind (and easily could have done because how was delivery driver to know which house he’d mistakenly left it at). But I was more concerned that some poor person was missing their stuff so rang supermarket helpline. Was told to keep it, for safety reasons they couldn’t take it back. So felt like I did the right thing and got an extra pile of shopping. The girl on the phone did ask me to list the extras so she could try and track the delivery it belonged to.
