Knowingly stealing - food shop delivery

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:45

We order from one of the main supermarkets. On the day of the delivery (last week), I decided to cancel the shop as many of my plans had changed so i didn’t need some of the stuff that had been ordered.

Anyway, the food van turned up and I had a hunch that if I accepted the order I could get the groceries and still get the refund. Which is exactly what happened. It was a risk but I still needed majority of the groceries ordered so thought I’d chance it. We had similar happen once before but we were honest in that scenario.

Even if the supermarket comes back and want me to rectify the error/pay up I can do so - that’s no problem.

I know it’s wrong but I believe the majority would do the same.

Be honest would you?

How are you different to someone who just walks into a supermarket and walks out with items without paying? You both know exactly what is going on and that you aren't paying for the goods.

Felford · 07/11/2024 14:27

This happened to me - I called to cancel as I was going to be late home because of train delays. The van turned up late anyway - I explained the situation to the driver and he had no problem with me accepting the delivery which I was happy to do as I needed the food! I called customer services afterwards to try and pay but they said that as it was cancelled on their system they had no way of reinstating the delivery and taking payment. Clear conscience as I did at least try to pay.

Wish I'd ordered more champagne..

But you offered to pay, totally different to the scuzzy OP who has admitted to planning the theft in advance.

Odearr · 07/11/2024 14:29

I wouldn't have personally but I can't say I'd care if others would.
Can't bring myself to care about a supermarket losing a tiny bit of money when they happily take every opportunity to squeeze every penny they can't from people

Redmat · 07/11/2024 14:29

No because I'm not a thief. But you are.

Anotherparkingthread · 07/11/2024 14:29

I'm usually pro eating from the buffet when you didn't pay etc but this might be a bit far for even me lol.

If I get a delivery and it has a bottle of wine in it or something nice that I didn't order, I don't ring them up to give it back, but an entire shop is a bit different lol.

DieStrassensindimmernass · 07/11/2024 14:30

Oldermum84 · 07/11/2024 14:26

Yes. They're not exactly going to be able to put it all back on the shelf in the shop are they. It would most likely get binned. What a waste. It's the shop's fault, you cancelled it for genuine reasons, they shouldn't have delivered it.

Nope.

Christmasfairy3 · 07/11/2024 14:30

No I absolutely wouldn't do that .
I strongly believe in what goes around comes around
So I'd never put a foot wrong .

Keleshey · 07/11/2024 14:30

No I wouldn't do it. I'm a single mum on benefits and would absolutely LOVE a free shop. It'd be nice to add a few extra 'luxuries' into my shop, like my favourite ice cream, crisps and dip etc but everything has to be carefully budgeted for, still I'd never do this.

Is it the crime of the century, nope. Still, I could never and would never, if I was desperate I'd go to a food bank or ask a family member or friend to borrow some money before scamming anyone (or any business).

Doubtful you'll end up paying in monetary terms but I personally don't like putting bad stuff out into the world lest it come back for me.

Bignanna · 07/11/2024 14:30

Surely the delivery driver recorded that the food had been delivered, in which case the OP would be charged ( hopefully) I use Ocado and I always get an email from them afterwards, saying how their prices on my order compared with other supermarkets.

BurglarAndSwag · 07/11/2024 14:31

Even I wouldn't stoop so low, and I have almost no morals...

Waitingforthecold · 07/11/2024 14:31

Seashellssanctuary · 07/11/2024 14:26

@Waitingforthecold but you got the food, you're not going to convince anybody but yourself that you werent dishonest

Edited

Well I don’t think I was dishonest, I communicated with the shop and the driver that the order had been cancelled and made it clear I wasn’t prepared to waste my time on hold to their customer service team as a result of someone else’s incompetence / laziness. I left the ball in their court, they obviously didn’t feel it worth it to chase the money!

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 07/11/2024 14:31

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:59

Well I would just make up that there had been a communication error with husband.

And then you’ll be lying and pulling your husband into it. And if the shop takes it further you’ll have to both get your stories straight…
But if you get away with it, you’ll feel encouraged to try again, maybe choose more expensive products.
And if it’s so easy, why not slip something into your pocket next time you’re in a shop …
It’s a slippery slope, OP. Not worth it, just to feel smart because you stole something.

Norniron24advice · 07/11/2024 14:31

Nope. I would not do this. I think the thread gives you an idea that most wouldn't either.

I think it's a pretty low thing to do, especially as you admit you decided to chance it. Have you told your friends and family that you have stolen?

I'm the kind of person that returns a pound coin to someone if I've seen them drop it.
Would you OP?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/11/2024 14:32

TidyDancer · 07/11/2024 13:57

I think what is done is dreadful tbh and you should be ashamed of yourself but it's clear you're not. I don't think the majority of people would even consider doing this.

I agree, @TidyDancer. There is no way I would do this.

Thefts like this put money onto the prices that we all pay, through shrinkage (the % that shops put onto prices to cover losses due to theft, breakage, spoilage etc). I don’t like paying more because other people don’t want to be honest.

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 07/11/2024 14:32

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:57

No hand on heart I didn’t orchestrate the whole thing but I know my friend had cancelled once from the same supermarket and the van still showed up. So when the opportunity presented itself I thought I’d chance it.

I didn't orchestrate it but I did. 🙄

Willsnbills · 07/11/2024 14:32

@Ponter karma will come back to get you. I hope you understand that! it always does!

CharlotteLucas3 · 07/11/2024 14:32

I don't know. If I didn't, it would be because I'd be worried about karma.

Supermarkets have no morals so I wouldn't feel guilty.

LurkingFromTheShadows · 07/11/2024 14:33

That's awful

Richiewoo · 07/11/2024 14:33

You're a thief and an arsehole.

historyismything82 · 07/11/2024 14:33

You utter troll.

I don’t believe in karma. Plenty of examples of twats never getting their comeuppance.

The supermarket made the error.

I’ve never once stolen previously so i can’t be that much of a degenerate

Well now you have stolen. So you are a degenerate.

nowahousewife · 07/11/2024 14:36

Nah, you knew what you were doing and you’re a common thief.
Waitrose accidentally delivered me a couple of bags of someone else’s groceries alongside my own, I immediately phoned them and offered to drop them back to the shop but they said to keep them. That’s what an honest person does, pretty simple really and I can lie straight at night.

Margorett · 07/11/2024 14:37

Quite simply you're a thief !
