Knowingly stealing - food shop delivery

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:45

We order from one of the main supermarkets. On the day of the delivery (last week), I decided to cancel the shop as many of my plans had changed so i didn’t need some of the stuff that had been ordered.

Anyway, the food van turned up and I had a hunch that if I accepted the order I could get the groceries and still get the refund. Which is exactly what happened. It was a risk but I still needed majority of the groceries ordered so thought I’d chance it. We had similar happen once before but we were honest in that scenario.

Even if the supermarket comes back and want me to rectify the error/pay up I can do so - that’s no problem.

I know it’s wrong but I believe the majority would do the same.

Be honest would you?

Honestly?
I would contact the supermarket and tell them

I’m not boasting. Never once stole before. Always try do the right thing normally. I just chanced it. I have to be honest we were hosting a dinner party which didn’t go ahead so the nice items - wine, meat just tempted me to chance it.

It doesn't matter that you've never done it before, you're doing it now, knowingly.

i don’t know how it happened. I rang the morning of the delivery as I could no longer do it on the app as it was too close to the delivery. So rang up. Saw that it showed up as cancelled on my app. And the van still showed up. This was 9 days ago.

Got the refund.

Similar happened to a friend (where I got idea) and she told me they never found out.

So you did it on purpose?!
I hope you get banned by the supermarket TBH, people like you are putting prices up for everyone else.

Oh so it’s not even necessary items, it’s luxury food and a piss up. In that case no, I think you’re a twat.

Bournetilly · 07/11/2024 13:57

I wouldn’t have accepted it. Obviously it’s wrong but I also wouldn’t have wanted to end up paying if I didn’t really need everything.

Seashellssanctuary · 07/11/2024 13:57

Bizarre to ask if theft is OK. You could have just refused the order. It was no longer yours if you cancelled.

Many companies blacklist dishonest people, you'd do well to keep honest if you wish to continue online shopping

DieStrassensindimmernass · 07/11/2024 13:54

Where you 'got the idea' - so you deliberately schemed the whole thing???

No hand on heart I didn’t orchestrate the whole thing but I know my friend had cancelled once from the same supermarket and the van still showed up. So when the opportunity presented itself I thought I’d chance it.

I thought you were going to say they accidentally left a pack of biscuits in your basket. Not the whole fucking shop. I’m surprised you get the option to cancel so last minute, seems like a flawed system but you’re still taking the piss.

TidyDancer · 07/11/2024 13:57

I think what is done is dreadful tbh and you should be ashamed of yourself but it's clear you're not. I don't think the majority of people would even consider doing this.

SisterAgatha · 07/11/2024 13:58

I’d have taken it then called and paid because it would have gone to waste otherwise. But just taking it might get the driver in trouble 😞

TheShellBeach · 07/11/2024 13:58

OMG it gets worse.
You did it on purpose.

That is stealing.

Rightio.

Doliveira · 07/11/2024 13:58

I wouldn’t feel at all guilty about getting some free groceries but I’d worry that they might find out and ban me as a customer, which would be very inconvenient.

FavourCraver · 07/11/2024 13:59

yes, I would. But Mumsnet constantly reminds me what a god-awful person I am (supposedly). It’s a fucking massive supermarket chain.

murasaki · 07/11/2024 13:59

This was deliberately planned, not just keeping a random item. So theft.

I had a random bag of stuff delivered with an order once. As I'd opened it, the chat bot told me to keep it. I'd whatsapped the street group to see if anyone was missing a bag. No one was. So I had all the ingredients for a beef bourgignon, thanks Morrisons! But I'd put effort into trying to sort it, so not theft.

Well I would just make up that there had been a communication error with husband.

Of course you orchestrated this. You knowingly accepted goods you didn't intend paying for. Shameful. You're putting the cost onto everybody else.

'Getting some free groceries' aka stealing, because you had already cancelled the payment.

Your morals have clearly deserted you on this occasion. Shame on you.

SisterAgatha · 07/11/2024 14:00

Oh I’ve just seen you got the idea from your friend.

why are you boasting about being a robber?

Are you going to phone and pay for the order you accepted (knowing you hadn't paid for it)?

Bollocks. You said you "got the idea" from a friend who had done the same.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 07/11/2024 14:02

I have never just randomly decided to be a thief based on a hunch and my scummy mate having pulled the same scam in the past and I do not believe most people would do that either.
