To ask for your BBC Sounds recommendations

I have a fair bit of cleaning to do today and have been enjoying some BBC Sounds content, BBC Ulster in particular had a great wee programme about a haunting and a house that vanished. I also enjoyed a recent one on Lord Lucan. I feel like I might have exhausted BBC Sounds by now though - what am I missing? What have you enjoyed?

Does anyone else find that if you look on BBC Sounds by category the results seem to change only very slowly, and many programmes that appear in the BBC radio schedules don't get picked up in the category lists?

I always get the feeling that there are loads of juicy things that I am simply not finding.

I've had this - I've come across something by chance or by searching for a programme recommended to me and it definitely doesn't appear if I just look in the appropriate category. Very odd.

Such a shame the BBC Sounds app is so clumsy and difficult to navigate because the content is fabulous!

Agree! I have the same problem with Apple TV+

I forgot to say that there is a superb back catalogue of Archive on 4 which is a stunning collection of one-off documentaries and personal-passions. There is something for everyone in there - one of my favourites was an interview recorded with the author Andrea Levy and which she only agreed to on the condition that it wasn't released until after she died (she had incurable cancer at the time). It was so moving but there's everything from Frank Cotterell Boyce on children's books to one about Grenfell.

Also, if you want to raise your blood pressure, The Great Post Office Scandal is a tremendous piece of campaigning journalism which will not fail to get you screaming out loud at the way in which the PO treated its sub-post masters.

Are you paying out of the goodness of your heart? You don't need a licence for radio alone.

I like Sliced bread and Toast, Just One Thing, the law programme (not sure of the name) in fact too many to mention, I listen a lot

If you're listening to content that people have worked their backsides off to write and produce then you should jolly well pay for it.

Hapagirl48 · 08/11/2024 08:30

Mattan - Injustice of a Hanged man. I listened to this on a long drive a couple of years ago and it still haunts me. I followed it up with Shreds Murder in the Docks. They are both about miscarriages of justice.

FannyCradocksDoughnut · 08/11/2024 08:37

A new series of The Gift has just been released. About what can happen when the results of an online ancestry DNA test are not as expected! Fascinating!

Picoloangel · 08/11/2024 08:39

Not BBC Sounds but Serial have great podcast - my favourites are The Truth About Adnan Syed and Sh*t Town.

I listen to podcasts on my way home from work on the train so am always looking for recommendations!

I tend towards crime (I work in the criminal justice system in my defence - pardon the pun) and documentary type stuff. There’s a great one which Michael Sheen was involved in about awful “forever” chemicals being dumped in Wales years ago. Really interesting though the name escapes me. It’s a BBC sounds one though.

Pinknotpurple · 08/11/2024 08:46

Voices from the old Bailey.

It's centuries old court cases that are absolutely fascinating. Details of people's lives who were otherwise not recorded in history.

Auburngal · 08/11/2024 08:50

I like Sliced Bread which talks about latest gimmicks, is it worth spending more on tyres v standard. Then its sister programme, Toast talks about companies that are no more and its reasons of their demise.

Auburngal · 08/11/2024 08:54

Not a BBC Sounds podcast, Love British Killers with Stuart Blues.

creameggz · 08/11/2024 09:26

I like consumer programmes, so listen to You & Yours, Moneybox and (sometimes) the Martin Lewis podcast.

I also like Sliced Bread if they're talking about a product I'm interested in.

Anything by Tim Harford (More or Less, Cautionary Tales).

Life Changing can be compelling listening too ... interviews with people who have had life changing experiences.

Insisted sit a great one recently - think it was The Crime Next Door and was a series about a double murder in a remote Welsh farm; Death on the Farm. It was kind of heartbreaking but very good.

Also, “Who Killed Emma?” “ Sweet Bonny” and the Hampstead Child Abuse Hoax.

my bloody autocorrect! Sweet BoBBY

How did I forget Cabin Pressure?! Literally one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard.

I wanted to share it with OH but it wasn’t available recently.

I thought I had completed BBC sounds so this thread is brilliant for new recommendations.
I follow Drama on 4 for a new standalone drama each week.
My favourite podcast of all time is Paradise which investigates the disappearance of two Brits in Belize some years ago and the story develops in real time over the course of the podcast. It’s really really good.

Eh? How could you complete it? There are numerous stations broadcasting all day plus all the podcasts and historic programmes, it would be literally impossible to listen to everything

Michael Sheen/forever chemicals is second series of 'Buried' 😁

Thank you! It wasn't last time I checked so we ended up listening on a dodgy YouTube video. Might have to do it again now! Love Cabin Pressure.

@Rooftileswithmoss thank you so much for recommending ‘The Documentary’ - enjoying this immensely!

MarjorieDanvers · 08/11/2024 23:51

I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned ‘The Rest is History’ - but there are still a fair few on Sounds so no adverts!

AlviarinAesSedai · 09/11/2024 00:10

The Lovecraft Investigations agree.
Limelight and Uncanny. The Whodunnit and the Paul Temple.
League of Gentlemen radio show is on at moment.
Eleanor Rising. I enjoyed Mrs Sidhu investigates before TV show. Elven Quest.

If you're up for some great comedy with a fair amount of pathos, have you listened to Conversations From A Long Marriage? Joanna Lumley and Roger Allam. All series currently on BBC Sounds. I'm waiting impatiently for more.

Pathos???
