To ask for your BBC Sounds recommendations

I have a fair bit of cleaning to do today and have been enjoying some BBC Sounds content, BBC Ulster in particular had a great wee programme about a haunting and a house that vanished. I also enjoyed a recent one on Lord Lucan. I feel like I might have exhausted BBC Sounds by now though - what am I missing? What have you enjoyed?

Young Again - Kirsty Young interviews famous people about their younger years and asks what they’d tell themselves if they could. The Philip Pullman and Minnie Driver ones are really good.

Mine are all Welsh (not in language but the landscape):

  • The Crossbow Killer (murder of Gerald Corrigan - mentioned up post)
  • Crime Next Door: Death on the Farm (murders of Griff and Patti Thomas)
  • Shreds: Murder in the dock (murder of Lynette White)

Before you think I am a complete nutter, they are all stories with a massive twist and some baffling outcomes in terms of justice - or lack thereof. I won’t say anything more as it would go into spoiler (if that’s an appropriate word) territory.

I have listened to the first two of these and will definitely listened to the third. Death in the Farm was utterly heartbreaking.

In a bizarre twist I used to know Terry Whall’s ex wife.

Picoloangel · 08/11/2024 07:15

Million Dollar Lover is also fantastic - really, really interesting.

GreyCarpet · 08/11/2024 07:18

May have been mentioned but Uncanny, The Witch Farm and Battersea Poltergeist.

All experiences of potentially paranormal activity.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 08/11/2024 07:18

Not horror per se but Cautionary Tales is brilliant!
Another vote for Lady Killers and You're Dead to Me

I listened to the last of Death on the Farm yesterday on the train to Cardiff and I honestly let out a big gulp/sob when the forensic stuff was discussed. Even as a lay person it was so obviously not as it was originally classed.

Wow, it’s so strange how these links occur isn’t it?

Absolutely agree, all fascinating… I drove past the turn off to Witch Farm about a week ago and it brought the whole podcast back to me.

  • Annika Stranded
  • Julie Enfield Investigates
  • McLevy

I do love a crime drama

AlertCat · 08/11/2024 07:32

Haven’t RTFT so this may have been suggested, but if you are interested in politics and current affairs The Coming Storm series are pretty interesting.

There was a play on last year called Spores that I also enjoyed. Intriguing!

Bumdrops · 08/11/2024 07:34

my top recommended:
The reunion
the patch
its a fair cop

StudioFocusTricky · 08/11/2024 07:35

Is this based on the Spanish tv show with the same name? I loved that series!

Allfur · 08/11/2024 07:38

Out if interest, how do people prefer to listen to podcasts that are non bbc?

2triangles · 08/11/2024 07:38

I also use Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

Doesn't seem to be having looked at the plot summary of the spanish one it's a very different storyline.

Shame. It disappeared from Netflix and I miss it, a podcast could have scratched that itch.

LiarLiarKnickersAblaze · 08/11/2024 07:46

Shedunnit - highly recommend

OneFunnyDog · 08/11/2024 07:48

I really like In Our Time where Melvyn Bragg sits with a couple of university professors to discuss a topic. Leans towards history, literature, philosophy but could be anything really. And there are over 1000 episodes, so plenty to listen to!

@everythingcrossed I really enjoy Missed Me too!

All the Americast ones and Conspiracyland ones have been fascinating and I never thought I'd enjoy listening to American politics.

TheDogsMother · 08/11/2024 07:55

Welcome to the Neighbourhood is really funny. Also loads of goods stuff on the True Crime section including Gangster, Wrongly Accused, Sweet Bobby and Lazarus Heist

TempersFuggit · 08/11/2024 07:57

I love:

  • McLevy
  • It’s a fair cop

-curious under the stars
-lady killers
-natalie Haynes stands up to classics is brilliant
-in and out of the kitchen is hilarious

I find ‘dead to me’ really annoying- why do we need a comedian - the content alone is fascinating

Nonbio46 · 08/11/2024 08:03

I love Lives less ordinary. Really interesting people and subjects. Enjoy 😊

crumpet · 08/11/2024 08:05

there have been lots of good recommendations so far. I’d add:

Lots of audio books
Whodunnits
sillines like Elvenquest and Claire in the Community
Lifelines was very good, as was Annika Stranded (with Nicola Walker)

if you highlight the radio station and scroll back over a few days you’ll probably hit on other series/programmes

SometimesMaybe · 08/11/2024 08:08

I thought I had completed BBC sounds so this thread is brilliant for new recommendations.
I follow Drama on 4 for a new standalone drama each week.
My favourite podcast of all time is Paradise which investigates the disappearance of two Brits in Belize some years ago and the story develops in real time over the course of the podcast. It’s really really good.
