To ask for your BBC Sounds recommendations

I have a fair bit of cleaning to do today and have been enjoying some BBC Sounds content, BBC Ulster in particular had a great wee programme about a haunting and a house that vanished. I also enjoyed a recent one on Lord Lucan. I feel like I might have exhausted BBC Sounds by now though - what am I missing? What have you enjoyed?

If you're a fan of the spooky stuff then Uncanny is a must!

The Intrigue podcasts are good too (To Catch a Scorpion is part of that, but there have been other series that are also worth a listen)

Uncharted with Hannah Fry is really interesting and I've just noticed there's a new series out

I really like the BBC Sounds content but I hate the bloody app! It stops for no reason all the time on my Android phone which is so annoying. Has anyone had similar and managed to stop it happening?

I just assumed it was poor signal but it does that for me too. And none.of the suggestions I've had on this thread come up when I'm browsing for something to watch on the app

The Lovecraft Investigations has four seasons/stories in shortish episodes, really gripping and fun with a conspiracy theory edge.

The new Dickens dramatisations, which are under the title Dickensian, are lovely.

This Thing of Darkness has two or three series I think, about a forensic psychiatrist working with criminals.

Whodunits has loads of classic crime drama.

Brilliant thank you

Louis Theroux did a series of interviews with celebrities during lockdown. A couple of them are fantastic, particularly the Rose McGowan one.

Agree with pp. re the Desert Island Discs back catalogue, too.

I've heard all of those, they were great

I listen to BBC World Service 'The Documentary'. I just pick one at random each time, they're fascinating. Not on the BBC sounds app though, it's useless! Also, Death In Ice Valley is brilliant.

Interesting, just listening through the website?

Crime Next Door: The Salisbury Poisonings

There are so many aspects to this case that I didn't consider at the time e.g. the perfume bottle contained enough Novichok to kill thousands of people in the town. Why didn't Sergei Skripal have any CCTV on his house? Why was he living openly under his own name?

The Dawn Sturgess inquiry is happening right now and this podcast is excellent at filling in the gaps.

I tried listening to this but gave up in frustration because they spoke too slowly and kept repeating stuff - is it worth revisiting or can I be dead cheeky and ask about some of the odd details that came out?

I really enjoyed The Curious History of Your Home by Ruth Goodman. Stories about the history of common objects in our home.

The Food Chain: There are hundreds of episodes available. All about various aspects of food including many related social issues. You don’t have to be a foodie to enjoy it.

Shedunnit: All about golden age crime stories and authors.

Room 5: A podcast where people share their stories of life changing diagnoses.

Life changing: Stories of people who have experienced extraordinary events.

Shared Experience: A podcast where they bring together people who have some life event or experience in common and share their stories.

The Crossbow Killer is a podcast all about the killing of an elderly man in Wales with a crossbow. It’s horrifying but fascinating.

I’ve just started listening to Real Dictators which is a podcast telling the story of various dictators throughout the world.

Some great stuff here I wouldn't never have stumbled upon in the app, thank you

The Gift, which is about various horrifying stories demonstrating the huge unintended consequences of mass DNA testing leading to people finding out they're not related to who they thought they were.

More or Less is excellent at explaining whether stories in the news have got the stats right.

I like Soul Music. It does seem to divide opinion, though!

I really enjoyed India Rakusen's 28ish Days Later, which is all about the menstrual cycle.

Heard a trailer for The Gift, meant to go back to that

Going to try some of these. If you like spooky, The Witch Farm was fantastic, and the Battersea Poltergeist (both same guy as Uncanny but whole series on one case, with dramatisation of events)

My most listened to thing is John Finnemores Souvenir programme if you like comedy - totally my comfort listen (you can probably tell I'm a bit stressed if you catch me listening to that or a Jane Austen audiobook!). Other good comedy : The Confessional, Dead Ringers, Mark Watson Talks a bit about life, mark steels in town, That Mitchell and Webb sound.

Factual stuff that's been good : The Coming Storm, Things fell apart, Shreds: Murder in the Dock, Vishal, the Shamima Begum story. And You're dead to me.

Do you remember the name of the BBC Ulster podcast? Sounds right up my street.

Edited

Assume Nothing: A Belfast Haunting

And Limelight: The House that Vanished, they were good!

Insisted sit a great one recently - think it was The Crime Next Door and was a series about a double murder in a remote Welsh farm; Death on the Farm. It was kind of heartbreaking but very good.

Also, “Who Killed Emma?” “ Sweet Bonny” and the Hampstead Child Abuse Hoax.

Nocalmwaters · 07/11/2024 20:18

Ok, I think most of mine have been mentioned, but I don’t really listen to
music only podcasts so I have about a million:

It’s a fair cop - hilarious stand up by Policeman on sabbatical Alfie Moore

Natalie Haynes Stands up for the Classical - amazing funny stand up about classical literature, etc.

A curious history of your home - one of the best things I’ve ever heard. History of every day objects with Ruth Goodman

You’re Dead to Me - Always amazing

Americast - always an interesting overview of American politics

No Such things as a Fish - interesting facts every week from the ‘Qi Elves’, always funny and interesting

Quite a Good Sport - two of the Elves from above look into different sports around the time of the olympics, fascinating and funny

Cautionary Tales - in depth dive into interesting things

News Quiz

More or Less

Word of Mouth - Beloved author Michael Rosen discusses language

Bad Women - the women murdered by Jack the Ripper, an in-depth look at their lives

Marianna In Conspiracyland

So you’ve been publicly shamed - Jon Ronson talks to people who have been publicly shamed, impact on them etc. super insightful

The Unbelievable Truth

Lady Killers

Seriously - a set of different documentaries a about different topics, but all interesting

Arlanymor · 07/11/2024 20:18

Mine are all Welsh (not in language but the landscape):

  • The Crossbow Killer (murder of Gerald Corrigan - mentioned up post)
  • Crime Next Door: Death on the Farm (murders of Griff and Patti Thomas)
  • Shreds: Murder in the dock (murder of Lynette White)

Before you think I am a complete nutter, they are all stories with a massive twist and some baffling outcomes in terms of justice - or lack thereof. I won’t say anything more as it would go into spoiler (if that’s an appropriate word) territory.

The app vs Alexa drives me crazy but I think that’s an Alexa issue. I wish they would join up better, streaming the radio and podcast content is the only reason I pay the licensing fee!

Are you paying out of the goodness of your heart? You don't need a licence for radio alone.

I like Sliced bread and Toast, Just One Thing, the law programme (not sure of the name) in fact too many to mention, I listen a lot

Elmeux · 07/11/2024 20:34

Shreds: Murder in the Dock - about the murder of Lynette White and the subsequent investigation and one of Britain's greatest miscarriages of justice

Violetparis · 07/11/2024 20:40

Young Again - Kirsty Young interviewing famous people about when they were young, some really interesting ones on their, I enjoyed Mel B's

tobee · 07/11/2024 20:58

Route Masters

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 07/11/2024 21:46

If its not already been mentioned, Its a Fair Cop - absolutely hilarious.

I thought I needed a TV license to stream BBC radio via Alexa but you’re right! Thanks 🤩

SilverShadowNight · 07/11/2024 23:18

I like It's A Fair Cop, Dead Ringers, Sliced Bread and Toast and No Such Thing As A Fish. I have also enjoyed comedies including I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue and old ones like All Gas and Gaiters.

TwoBlueFish · 07/11/2024 23:32

If you like drama then search for whodunnits and there’s a whole collection.

i also like Old Harry’s Game, Trust, Limelight,

I also like Evil Genius and You’re Dead to Me

HalfMumHalfBiccit · 07/11/2024 23:34

Listening to Little Dorrit atm - really good

Dead Ringers is back - ‘I know!’

Lucy Worsleys Lady Killers about female murderers through the ages.
Dead to me - horrible histories for adults
Macbeth - David Tennant
There's a witch one looking at modern Witches and the witch trials and the role of women and 'witchcraft' through the ages

That all sounds really interesting. I'm going to acquaint myself with Bbc Sounds!
