I have a fair bit of cleaning to do today and have been enjoying some BBC Sounds content, BBC Ulster in particular had a great wee programme about a haunting and a house that vanished. I also enjoyed a recent one on Lord Lucan. I feel like I might have exhausted BBC Sounds by now though - what am I missing? What have you enjoyed?

I really enjoyed The Curious History of Your Home by Ruth Goodman. Stories about the history of common objects in our home.

The Food Chain: There are hundreds of episodes available. All about various aspects of food including many related social issues. You don’t have to be a foodie to enjoy it.

Shedunnit: All about golden age crime stories and authors.

Room 5: A podcast where people share their stories of life changing diagnoses.

Life changing: Stories of people who have experienced extraordinary events.

Shared Experience: A podcast where they bring together people who have some life event or experience in common and share their stories.

The Crossbow Killer is a podcast all about the killing of an elderly man in Wales with a crossbow. It’s horrifying but fascinating.

I’ve just started listening to Real Dictators which is a podcast telling the story of various dictators throughout the world.

I find that BBC sounds is way crapper at buffering content than other apps like Spotify, If I'm listening to something on BBC Sounds then I make sure I've downloaded the episode before I listen to it.

Oh I always download too, but even so, the app just randomly stops. Especially if I try to use another app but also when I'm only using Sounds. It's particularly annoying when I'm driving and can't easily restart it

The Gift, which is about various horrifying stories demonstrating the huge unintended consequences of mass DNA testing leading to people finding out they're not related to who they thought they were.

More or Less is excellent at explaining whether stories in the news have got the stats right.

I like Soul Music. It does seem to divide opinion, though!

I really enjoyed India Rakusen's 28ish Days Later, which is all about the menstrual cycle.

Do you remember the name of the BBC Ulster podcast? Sounds right up my street.

Lifeglowup · 07/11/2024 15:16

It’s a fair cop

CrystalQueen01 · 07/11/2024 15:21

Cautionary Tales (same guy that does More or Less) - looks at various historical events and looks at what went wrong and what it tells us about human behaviour.

DPotter · 07/11/2024 15:25

Thanks for the suggestions everyone

For drama - Pilgrim by Sebastian Baczkiewicz and definitely endorse the Lovecraft series. Also caught part of Their Humble Servants - sounds interesting.

The Coming Storm - conspiracy theories linking in with USA elections

I love Uncanny, the Gift and More or Less

poppymango · 07/11/2024 15:35

Uncanny is great if you like ghosty stuff 🙂

Elphabaisnotwicked2024 · 07/11/2024 15:37

BBC Scotland have some good murder mystery series

outandunder · 07/11/2024 15:44

Mark steel is coming to town. Very funny especially if you know the places.

MoonriseKingdom · 07/11/2024 16:17

Intrigue - Million dollar lover - about a rich elderly lady who falls for a homeless bloke and the fall out with her daughters

A very British cult - about a life coaching company that was really a cult

The coming storm, Marianna in Conspiracy land and Things fell apart - if you like the crazy side of US politics

Natalie Haynes Stands up for Classics is a brilliant series, funny as well as informative

Seconded!

spiderlight · 07/11/2024 16:25

Another vote for Uncanny!

StanfreyPock · 07/11/2024 16:39

Definitely second the Dickens adaptations - just enjoyed the last two episodes of Great Expectations this afternoon while finishing off some knitting - the bliss of retirement!

The Missing Madonna is a great podcast by the daughter of one of the men involved in the recovery of a stolen Da Vinci painting - a fascinating inside story.

CountryGirlInTheCity · 07/11/2024 17:05

Desert Island Discs back catalogue…just scroll through until you see someone you’re interested in. I love it but then I am very nosy for ‘people detail’!

Download every time though because the app is unbelievably frustrating when streaming. It sometimes gets stuck (or whatever the tech term is) even when you’ve downloaded.

bluegreygreen · 07/11/2024 17:05

If you like science at all, Unexpected Elements is fascinating

SharpOpalNewt · 07/11/2024 17:07

Uncanny if you like spooky stuff. Also Scary on Spotify or Patreon.

I love the BBC3 Classical Mix Tape and Jo Whiley's Shiny Happy Playlist.

If you're up for some great comedy with a fair amount of pathos, have you listened to Conversations From A Long Marriage? Joanna Lumley and Roger Allam. All series currently on BBC Sounds. I'm waiting impatiently for more.

I heard some snippets of this before and enjoyed it, thanks for the reminder!

I enjoy listening to the back catalogue of desert island disks, there’s loads.

Podcasts I’ve enjoyed recently- To catch a scorpion, Girl -Taken, and the recent Robert Smith interview & Cure live set.

I didn't know they were available so far back, thank you for the suggestions!

I’m a bit obsessed with Tortoise Media podcasts on BBC Sounds at the moment. Currently partway through Pig Iron.

Also love some of the dramas on BBC Sounds, especially the Limelight ones.

Yes I'd just finished Pig Iron before I posted!
