ExH brought his dog in my house without permission

CfCfCftooMuch · 05/11/2024 19:08

ExH just dropped off his dog in my house. For me to look after, even though i had said no to looking after him. The dc let Exh and dog in when i was out. They love that dog and of course had no knowledge of anything.

ExH is gone now for two weeks. Abroad. He just walked out and took off to the airport, leaving dog behind.

I've got two dc and two cats and work long hours. The cats have never spent a night/day alone in the house with this dog. He is kind and mellow, but a large breed. Size of a wolf.
I've contacted a dog shelter and might have to go to go through rspca.

Posting to tell someone. This is just one of many many ways he always finds a way to use me or control my life. I didn't want any of this. And now im left here calling shelters (which im asked to pay for), calling womens aid, calling rspca, figuring out how to do this without upsetting the dc, texting exH to sort out care if he doesn't want me to take this further, posting here for support, trying to figure out tomorrow with sorting out the kids, my work, other stuff, business meeting and my actual day job. Honestly?! Wtf!!!

Fyi, you can change the settings so you don't get the notifications. That way, you won't be distracted when you're lecturing other people whilst having no idea what you're on about.

Cheers Soily 😘🍻

FlingThatCarrot · 05/11/2024 22:38

Surely just drop it off with the dog warden/ a shelter and say you found it running away, no idea whose it is, nothing to do with you.

They'll scan it and get his details from the microchip and contact him. He'll then have to pay for the dogs care/ a fee to get it back when he comes home.

Dogs looked after, cats happy, ex pays the bill and you get to carry on with whatever you had planned for the next 2 weeks.

DiscoBeat · 05/11/2024 22:37

If it were me I would put it in kennels. He can pay when he gets back. Definitely don't let yourself into his house uninvited. Also if you're out for 9 hours you can't just leave the dog there. What a controlling thing to do, he sounds like an asshole.

I agree with this. You can’t leave the dog for hours or longer in an empty flat. You will cause it suffering and it is an innocent animal.

2024onwardsandup · 05/11/2024 22:40

@FlingThatCarrot that would be incredibly distressing for the dog. Unbelievably stressful
for it.

Therealjudgejudy · 05/11/2024 22:41

Op, he is some piece ofwork! @Scentedjasmin brilliant!

If he's away for 2 weeks, in that timeframe the shelter can legally dispose of an unclaimed dog. Ex might come home to find his dog has been put to sleep.

Call the dog warden in the morning and say the dog has been abandoned and you can't keep it. They will take it.

Poor dog. I get op doesn't want to look after it but poor dog.

HangingOver · 05/11/2024 22:52

Just let it go outside. I’m a man and that’s what I would do. If it gets killed, it gets killed. It’s callous but I wouldn’t give an abusive ex a minute of my time. All living things die. To argue against it is futile.

I'm sure that argument will comfort the people who die in the RTA the loose animal causes.

Stupid dickhead.

theblindman · 05/11/2024 23:04

Shelters may well put the dog down if he's gone for 2 weeks

Lavender14 · 05/11/2024 23:11

Does your council have an animal welfare officer you could contact to report it as abandoned?

SpideyVerse · 05/11/2024 23:34

Hi, @CfCfCftooMuch
Just wondering....
If your 13yo goes to school 10min from Ex's flat, could DC stop in on the dog from there during lunch break, to give it a breif walk & toilet break?
(Maybe after school, too, but ideally at lunch to break-up the day).

What a piece of work is that prince of an Ex :-(

girlofsandwich · 05/11/2024 23:43

Poor dog, poor cats and poor you! You obviously care a lot about the dog OP. Anyone posting to just let the dog out or drop him at a shelter isn't reading the OP's posts. The cats must be stressed out of their minds too.

Would mindmyhouse.com be an option? Probably not at short notice and without his consent. What a shit show he's left you in.

Is there a dog walker who could take him out during the day while you're at work? They can be quite cheap. Could your 13 year old pop in then on his way home to feed him/be with him for a while? The dog is likely too strong to walk on his own and not sure if you'd be comfortable with them being alone with the dog. It's not ideal he's alone for hours at a time but better than dropping him off at a shelter.

I don't have any good advice I feel so bad for everyone in this situation. He doesn't deserve that dog at the very least and I'm sorry you're the one dealing with this. He's an absolute arsehole.

UnhappyAndYouKnowIt · 05/11/2024 19:34

Yep. Huskies are also notorious escape artists. It's a shame that the dog got away while you were at work and was never seen again. I sure hope a breed specific rescue finds it and gets it a lovely new home.

Absolutely! It sounds as if the, er, runaway may find a better home with responsible people.

Ellmau · 06/11/2024 00:05

OP, I do sympathise with you.

Could your 13 yo be given the job of caring for the dog?

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 06/11/2024 00:34

Have not RFT but this cannot be emphasised enough. Most rescues are full to bursting and the dog wardens are only obliged to keep dogs for 7 days then they want them gone as new dogs ate being picked up all the time. If a rescue has not offered to take them by time the 7 days are up, they are euthanised. Individuals cannot rehome from the dog warden's pound, only rescues and they are usually too full to help.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 06/11/2024 01:09

Put dog in a kennel and send DH the bill

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 06/11/2024 01:12

You could list the dog on borrow my doggy.com and someone might take it for free for two weeks

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 06/11/2024 01:15

You should get a non molestation order

Foxxo · 05/11/2024 22:25

"Huskies don't normally shed" Really? You clearly know nothing.

They DO shed, they shed LOTs, especially if its moulting season when they blow their coat.

I have one and she never sheds but my Staffie mix does, it must vary dog to dog 🐶 my auntie has one too.

Anotherparkingthread · 06/11/2024 01:56

Text him and tell him that the dog ran outside when DC let the door open and was hit by a car. It's currently at the emergency vets and they want 6k to operate or the dogs going to be put down.

Turn your phone on to silent for a bit and ignore him about 6 hours from when he replies is a good amount of time. Regardless of what he says, text him later and tell him it's dead, you're incredibly sorry but the dog didnt make it. Children are too distraught to talk to him about it etc. Ruin his fucking holiday.

Anotherparkingthread · 06/11/2024 01:58

Also, tell him the vets still want just over 1k for the treatment before ddog died. Be oddly specific with the number.

That's not true for all councils.

Swansea council - Stray dogs we have collected may be available for re-homing if they are not collected by their owner within seven days. It is the council's policy not to re-home dogs in the same area where they were found straying. We charge £127 to rehome a stray dog.

He has no parents alive. Tonight i will lock the cats in my bedroom with me. Tomorrow i take the dog to his place using the dc keys.

It’s an inexcusable situation that he’s caused, but you can’t just put the dog back in his house for 2 weeks without somebody to give him food and water.

Edited: Just read your other posts where I realized that it was just during the day. You sound like a very caring person, and I’m sorry you and the poor dog have to deal with the irresponsibility of this arse.

Duty of care to the dog?

MM, not quite the right phrase... but legal responsibility. For example if OP were to let the dog loose in the road and dog causes an accident, OP could be liable, she made the choice to let the dog loose in the road.

If OP leaves dog somewhere, dog suffers or causes an accident, potentially OP has neglected the animal.

Much would depend on how well the dogs actual owner manages to pretend that he truly believed OP had agreed to look after the dog, but it is possible.

There are other situations where an animal abandoned into someones care becomes the legal responsibility of that person even if its without their knowledge/agreement (for ex. horses on livery yards where the owner is effectively just the landlord providing premises, has nothing to do with horse care at all. If someone simply leaves a horse there, they cannot just let it starve/escape/go without veterinary care should the horse need that).

As for 'recover the costs later' well I was hoping you'd work out a way how without it being spelled out. If he doesn't know which kennels the dog is in... for example.. until the bill is covered.. There is the more traditional route of small claims court though.

That would seem like a good solution.

No kennels are going to take it without payment first are they?
