if that’s a lurcher or a greyhound then it’s basically bred to kill other animals. Not much different from the dogs you detest for their bull baiting and dog fighting history. Double standard much!

She's neither of those- Far smaller. Works with distressed people. Gentle all round.

Not sure I’d trust it with a rabbit or cat.

Fine with both!

Meanwhile he’s a photo of my bunny and friend’s XL sharing a meal together. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Looks like bunny is about to become the main course.

Poor bunny….

RichTea90 · 17/11/2024 08:47

Here are my two… wouldn’t hurt a fly. Well behaved, friendly, no signs of aggression towards humans, and they’re small and easy enough to control. They have a lovely temperament.

I really don’t think culling all dogs is the answer.

13 attacks in 48 hours?! And still nothing is being done?? If this was any other violent crime it would be stopped! Cull these things!

The residential streets of Sheffield, Liverpool, Birmingham, Leicester and London are no longer safe.

KnottedTwine · 17/11/2024 09:14

Culling them all probably a step too far.

But I would definitely support some sort of licensing system which meant dog owners had to pay a hefty sum each year for their licence, say £250 ish per animal. That would bring in enough money to fund proper dog control teams to instantly deal with problem dogs.

The trouble is, it would be the responsible dog owners, the ones who generally train and have non aggressive breeds who would buy the licences- the irresponsible wouldn't bother.

Chipping is mandatory, but there are un-chipped dogs about , from smuggled and back yard bred dogs.

Bestchocolate · 17/11/2024 09:28

I wonder what happened to the woman with the baby walking up the road.
She has a right to safely walk up the road with her child and little dog.
That owner of the beast that attacked her robbed her of that right. I can't imagine what the child is feeling, the mum and they may get ptsd.
How can this be made up to her what compensation can she get? What laws can protect any of us walking up a street :without fear of these beasts like lions coming at us? On the second video you can hear children watching that man with the dogs and then screaming in terror when he's attacked. I can't believe our children are witnessing this horror and of course being attacked and killed and maimed by them.

No one needs huge muscular dogs why is this indulgent want trumping our children's safety abd childhood??

No chip, no licence = if you are reported or your dog is causing an issue, it is put down. Immediately, no questions asked.

That would be a good idea. But there would still be the feckless who wouldn't care at jot.

That Bully owner in London, when his two dogs were shot by police was banned at the time for keeping dogs.

The English Bull Terrier that attacked my friend's two children {in a buggy and the toddler walking} was owned by a man who was also banned for keeping dogs {he had a dog fighting conviction}- but these two typical owners still went out and got aggressive dogs despite the dog owning ban.

A Bull breed RSPCA programme on TV {Now you tube} also showed irresponsible owners who had a ban keeping dogs also had Pits in grossly disgusting conditions, and the gobby owner was cussing and shouting and swearing- Par for the course.

Beautiful dogs!

I agree - we can’t cull ALL dogs, that would be ridiculous. Aside from the loving, gentle pets - you have guide dogs and sniffer dogs and police dogs

That dog will eat the rabbit given the chance, if you don't understand that you need help.

I would just have these animals confiscated and shot by the police if they were walked unmuzzled. The owners don’t give a shit.

The fact that the police are appealing to the public is a terrible sign. That will do nothing.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/11/2024 10:00

Attack-instincts have been purposely bred into them. That is not the dogs’ fault, but people who choose to ignore the fact are just wilfully deluded.

I do wonder how many deaths from a formerly ‘loving’ dog it’ll take, before these dogs are banned altogether.

Nah. She occasionally tried to play with them but she knew they are off the menu. She seemed a sweet dog.

This is the problem with people like your friend unfortunately. The dog does have a killer instinct, like all XL bullies, and if you think it doesn't then you are uneducated.

There's no cure for stupidity that severe.

What are they appealing to the public to do? People report these types of dogs all the time and nothing is done.

OonaStubbs · 17/11/2024 12:44

There needs to be a special fast armed response unit specifically to deal with devil dogs.

Our old dog was such a scaredy-cat, she used to hide behind the sofa when a DD’s friend brought his house-bunny round!

In over 14 years she never so much as bared her teeth at anyone or anything, though she’d sometimes bark at anything she hadn’t seen before, that she found frightening - e.g. a policeman’s helmet (he very obligingly took it off 😂) and a Halloween pumpkin.

Warning. Distressing video and pictures.
Something needs to be done now.

I can’t even make sense of what I’ve just read in this article and also stories on this thread about dogs attacking kids etc. This is crazy and chaotic.

Police /local authorities need better funding to crack down on this and we need a more proactive preventative system put in place in the longer term.

And I agree with pp the North Yorkshire police statement was a bit silly and meaningless, you really can’t read dogs minds or predict their behaviour. Or maybe that was their point 🤔 the fact that a dog can seemingly attack out of the blue

I suspect it’s a bit of a tick box exercise - a low effort way of looking like they’re doing something tbh. Maybe everyone needs to write to their MPs and westminister will get involved.

I take public transport and this is one of the reasons I’m learning to drive. Dogs- and this includes XL bullies - can be sat next to me on a train and I couldn’t object. What if it goes crazy and I’m stuck on a moving train/bus?

I’m seeing Dogs of all kinds on trains more often and half of them are either unleashed or on a long lead. So far thankfully it’s been the less scary types I’ve seen but it’s only a matter of time.

They must act now and do more to protect us from these dogs in public spaces.

It’s ironic how I’m described as uneducated but every organisation, charity, institution, and even the British Veterinary Association, whom base their findings and conclusions on actual research as opposed to anecdotal evidence, are all against BSL. I mean if that doesn’t speak volumes then I don’t know what to say to you. When an opinion cannot be changed by reason and genuine evidence, not the stuff you read in the daily fail, then it is usually due to bigotry I’m afraid.

The above link is the BVA’s actual stance on BSL for anyone who dares to keep an open mind.

The picture below is the XL asserting her killer instinct on the resident cat.

I'm sorry your feel anxious but I feel like you are being really unreasonable. I know we can’t chose our triggers when it comes to anxiety but you are so much more likely to be harmed by a person when using public transport. As far as dogs go you are so much more likely to be bitten by a dog of a different breed especially when the XL will be muzzled and leashed. I would feel safer around a dog wearing a muzzle then I would with any random dog just wondering about whilst their owner has no control and likely has their head down looking at their phone.
