Another fatal dog attack

So saddened by the news a 10 year old girl has been killed by what sounds to be an XL Bully.

I'm shocked that any family would keep one after so many attacks. There are worse things than kindly being PTS.

It seems like the same line every time "loving family dog, never done anything like this".

How many do there have to be before people realise any XL Bully has it in them. It's not their fault, they're not bad dogs, it's just genetic the same way a dachshund barks or a spaniel's tail wags the dog.

9 children a day killed on the roads in the UK. What's your view on 20mph zones and LTNs?

I'm against status dogs, whether that's XL Bullys, overbred Cavaliers, or whatever mongrel of the month is currently the fashionable for designer-poo. But society needs to get its priorities straight. Most dog attacks on children are the family pet, whether that's fatal attacks or life-changing injuries with facial scarring and plastic surgery. You can't legislate for stupid if people insist on being irresponsible parents, and bring the risk into their own families.

ScrambIed · 04/11/2024 10:05

I am for a total cull. 10000 XL bullies are not worth more than 1 human.
Cull them all and feed them to the lions.

And anyone who doesn't want XLs culled, because they think it's cruel, consider the cows/sheep/pigs "culled" just to feed Beast/Simba/MurderHound, and it's actually fewer deaths.

That poor little girl, and how she must have suffered.

Prosecute the parents.

My neighbour acquired an Akita a few months ago. We live on a narrow street, front doors open onto the street. I've sent my small, shouty, JR Cross to happily live with a relative. There is absolutely no way either of us would come out intact from a disagreement with the Akita. I wish neighbour felt the same way about his children.

I witnessed an xl bully dog attack a dog and it's owner last week. Thankfully no serious injuries, the dog was off lead and had no muzzle. The attack happened next to a small children's park where a mum and her little girl were. They were terrified. When it was reported to the police their response was that 'because there is no cctv covering that area, there is nothing they can do.' This is despite there being 2 separate witnesses and the owner being well known to the police.

Has anyone reported this to a higher level?

Farfarout · 04/11/2024 10:09

Thistimearound · 04/11/2024 06:32

Well the owners were clearly breaking the law then and hopefully will be facing some kind of sentence? You’d hope, anyway.

If you have an XL bully and it hurts someone it is not a tragic accident it is very much your fault.

I think losing a child is sentence enough.

I do agree that remaining XL bullies should be killed.

NewGreenDuck · 04/11/2024 10:09

BTW I used to put a muzzle on my old dog when we went out as he liked to find things to eat! We live near the beach so he could always find a tasty morsel when he was mooching along the beach every morning. The number of people who told me I was cruel was astonishing. I know muzzling wouldn't have stopped this tragedy, but don't you think muzzling all dogs would be a good idea?

HagsRule · 04/11/2024 10:12

DexysMidniteRunners · 04/11/2024 08:33

It needs to be reported. Please report them, or endanger someone's - maybe your - life

I actually have reported it to the council via their website but they told me because it is 'muzzled it's 'okay'. I said I didn't think it was a sufficient muzzle but they said as it hasn't attacked and it is on a lead with the muzzle it's within the rules. V frustrating. I don't know the owner to try and talk to her either; I've only seen her with it walking when I'm driving past in my car. We live off a farm road popular with dog walkers. Since seeing her a few times I no longer walk down to the park.

Surely it's another thing people would ignore?

I would do it if it became the law. But there's already lots of dog law that people flaunt

Ear cropping for example has been illegal for years but you see them out and about
often the dogs involved in incidences have cropped ears which tells me the owner isn't going to be following the law anyway.

LivelyMintViper · 04/11/2024 10:15

Behavior in dogs has a large genetic component and a lot of vicious attacks can be traced back to a specific dog whose bloodline has been amplified by inbreeding. I did read that in the US breeders no longer use pedigree dogs who are descended from this dog despite its impressive physique. Apparently in UK there is much smaller gene pool

SerendipityJane · 04/11/2024 10:20

I think maybe 10, possibly 12 people killed a year is acceptable ? we obviously need some limit, as one clearly isn't it. One a month seem a fair compromise.

I think it's the same system they are using for school shootings in the US. Clearly they have an acceptable limit on those too.

(The preceding post was sarcasm in it's most crude form, just for the avoidance of any doubt. For me no deaths is what I expect. Ever.).

UglyFatandStupid · 04/11/2024 10:21

Hattie please can you tell me why you think this? PM me if you like. My reason for asking is my brother has a cane corso. I’ve never met her, don’t see my brother from one year to the next, but I hear from my parents she’s young and very lively

My worry is that we (me, husband, two daughters, daughters boyfriend and my nearly 8 month old grandson) are going to my parents for Christmas. My brother doesn’t adhere to normal life and may show up at any point, and bring the dog. I’m really concerned. I grew up with working dogs (labradors, spaniels), but I don’t like babies around dogs. I was nervous enough with mine around my parents elderly, but extremely well trained lab, and I don’t want this unknown, probably barely trained, huge strong dog even in the same house as a probably just walking baby.

If you’ve got any reason to think they’re going to be the next devil dog please tell me. My parents think I’m overreacting, but I’ve read too many awful things

Ifallelsefailschocolate · 04/11/2024 09:26

Many people are not listening to the ban of this breed and common sense needs to prevail to prevent further deaths.

Would you feel the same way if your 10 year old child was just mauled to death ?

If my 10yo was killed by a drunk driver, I wouldn't demand all cars were crushed.

I'm not the poster but just incase they don't see it

Corsos are similar in look to xls but legal so for people that wanted a large bull breed dog they were the next logical legal step. Owners that tended to chose xls, tended to also be people who encouraged protectiveness and ultimately aggression in their dogs and will do the same to whatever large breed they get there hands on

They aren't particularly family dogs due to their size, and share the same brute strength in many ways but are usually considered more even tempered then xls

Obviously an explosion in the numbers of any dog breeds often means a significant boom in dodgy breeding.

Imo it's similar to what happens with rotties. Rotties had an explosion in popularity and became the dog of choice for thugs who encouraged poor behaviour, rarely treated them well. Breeders began to breed for size, and protectiveness where as before they were breeding for health, and stable temperaments. Dodgy breeders popped up everywhere producing unstable litters.

Once the phase ended, the owners moved onto other dogs and now most rotties you meet tend to be back to breed standard with a proper rottie temperament and healthier with owners more able to train them, exercise them and raise healthy dogs

No, it really isn't. Some 'families' would revel in the victim status & buy another inappropriate dog almost immediately to emotionally compensate for losing their '2 babies'. They'll view it as a tragic accident & never acknowledge their part in causing it. Listen to those of us who work day in/day out within these communities when we tell you that not everyone values the lives of their children enough to EVER prioritise their children's safety over their own wishes & feelings unless they're forced to by the courts. It stinks & it's difficult to comprehend how people can be that way, but it's true.

I don't know, the owners been reported a couple of times already. He usually walks the dog at night but as its getting dark earlier he's out earlier with it. We are all scared of it, its massive.

Disgusting post. Don't give a shit if you have knowledge of "these communities" you don't know this family.

Even with your shitty caveat of "some families" your post is fucking appalling.

Edited - if it gets deleted I'm not the one who reported it, think it should stay up for everyone to see how awful you are

Which while interesting, isn't a useful comparison.

Unless you are referring to a driverless/autonomous car ?

There are abusive parents & burying your head in the sand won't change that. A clear message needs to be sent out, there should be a prosecution.

LuluBlakey1 · 04/11/2024 10:39

Her parents have her blood on their hands.

I know people will be upset by me saying that but they do.

New dog to them. They live in a caravan. Dangerous breed. Small child. Why would you do that?

Megifer · 04/11/2024 10:42

To say what you did on this thread with no basis whatsoever as to how it could be remotely relevant to this family, except your alleged experience with "these communities" is really shameful.

Have a word with yourself.
